Short version: This«hotel» is really a nice hostel. If that appeals to you then go for it. Otherwise, skip. Stayed last week for one night in Copenhagen. Since it was such a short stay I guess it wasn’t so bad but I wouldn’t advise staying here for long or for people who value space. I think I was in room 503 which was totally underwhelming considering some of the rooms displayed on the website. I guess it was the artist’s vision but the room was stark white and minimalist which made me feel like I was staying in a plain and drab room, not a masterpiece. I didn’t have many complaints about the bathroom except for the poor toiletries provided and lack of counter space or hooks. Luckily my bathroom did not have the smell that other reviewers here mentioned. The breakfast was pretty good, I must say. No safes in rooms but you can access one at the front«desk». Leaving your luggage stored there is a gamble because«storage’ reallly means they’ll sit your bag near the desk — no tag, no system and no promise of protection. Ohhhkay. Best thing: Very good location. I could walk to lots of stuff and of course bike around. Shopping and cute cafes are just a block or so away.

I typically trust Lonely Planet for the majority of my travel info, but their recommendation to stay here in their most recent edition of «Lonely Planet: Scandinavia» really missed the mark. The hotel was described in the book as «needing a fresh coat of paint,» but otherwise was lauded for being«trendy and hip.» Sorry, but a bathroom that reeks of raw sewage with a poorly draining sink is anything but trendy and hip. The colors in our room(# 216) were light yellows, blues, greens, and white. Stains were visible on our comforter, curtains, and carpet. The wallpaper/trim needed replacing and the threshold for our doorway was clearly unfinished. We thought that maybe this was just our experience, but multiple reviews on Trip Advisor spoke of the same problems(I wish I had checked them before booking). It’s really a shame; apparently Hotel Fox commissioned famous artists to come in and design each room, but it’s obvious that they don’t take care of the spaces. The only reason why this is 2 stars instead of 1 is because the lobby was a nice spot to hang out and the staff was relatively friendly. The employee behind the bar happily made us currant brambles and tapas late one evening when we were looking for a midnight snack. This is a decent spot to come and grab food or drinks, but I simply can’t recommend staying here.

In this circumstance, I think the rating guidelines of «Meh. I’ve experience better.» it quite suitable for my stay at Hotel Fox. Hotel Fox bills itself as a designer-boutique hotel where each room has been specifically designed with a theme in mind by international artists. I think that is a wonderful vision for a hotel. My complaints come in the maintenance of the rooms. To start, we had two broken thresholds in our room, the wall paper was peeling and the comforter had noticeable stains on it. The rug was also filthy. I think that if you are going to have a hotel that designers put a large amount of artistic work into, then it is up to the hotel staff to maintain it. The hotel, from what we could see, was very much lacking in the maintenance department. The least attractive feature of the hotel was probably the bathroom. There was a common floor drain that the sink, toiled and tub all drained into. Not only was the drain open(by design, floor grate) but the sink had no trap. After about an hour in our room, we smelled what we described as «trash or sewage» coming from the drain. This is disgusting, and certainly not something that anyone wants. The hotel lobby is more like a lounge with a small bar(not full) and comfy seats. They are playing pleasant music and they offer a tapas menu that can be ordered at any time. We did make use of this one evening and it was quite a value for what we received. The staff members at the lobby/lounge were very pleasant and helpful. I think that Hotel Fox could be a very wonderful hotel if it was better maintained. However, after spending 3 nights there and dealing with the variety of issues, I don’t think I can recommend it for the money spent on it.

I stayed here a couple of years ago during a week long trip to Copenhagen. I had room #308, «East Side Guero Sound System,» which is a Mexican Wrestling theme room. The«large» size room was very spacious, with much more room than needed for one person. While the décor was really interesting and inventive, the furnishings were extremely minimal. I’d stay in this hotel again, but would choose a room more carefully to ensure the room has a desk and chair. The hotel staff was friendly and offered suggestions on things to do nearby, as well as an invitation to happy hour for guests. From this event and the staff recommendations, I’d say the hotel is more suited to a younger clientele, for example, they gave good recommendations for night clubs in the area.
