I’m in love. That was the best burger I’ve had in a long time. Thick and juicy meat patty, nicely grilled. If they can’t get the patty right in a burger, then everything else doesn’t matter. I’m glad to say that Triple O nailed it. And while it looked like a one man show in the shop, the food came out really fast, which was good because we had just come to grab a quick bite before a concert upstairs in the Star Performing Arts Centre. As mentioned by many others, the milkshake is one of their highlights, as well as the sweet potato fries.

Yes, as has been said it does the trick. Better than most of the $ 20 burgers around town and at a all-in combo price for $ 10 it is priced right(locally speaking of course). Less than stellar service but it’s a fast food joint and you don’t go for the service. As a westerner this one satisfies my craving for a taste of home.

5 stars just for the milkshake. This is THE milkshake to die for. I only order the strawberry milkshake, a departure from my usual chocolate, as the shake actually contains bits of strawberry seeds though I don’t think they actually add fresh berries to it, unlike in Canada. Having spent a portion of my growing up years in Vancouver, it was what I usually ordered. So maybe I am biased a bit, but somehow the shake in Singapore matched very closely to what you get there. It is thick, creamy and just so delicious. And you know how hard it is to get a fine shake here where most are pretty watery or lack the creaminess and taste. Burger wise, it is probably good, when compared to other fast food burger joints, but coming from the Canadian experience, it is just ok. I do like the fact that the patty is charred nicely with a bit of pink inside. Bun is very soft. The poutine is a disappointment. Skip it if you had it before in Canada. The sweet potato fries is surprisingly good. Crispy on the outside, sweet and soft on the inside, with a slight spiciness to it. The version at the Asia Square outlet was not as good when I popped by shortly after they opened there, maybe teething problem then. So far I usually just go to White Spot, I mean Triple O, when I need a milkshake fix. Now, if they will also include zoo sticks in the menu.

The MTO(made-to-order) utility burger has come to Singapore and this can only be a good thing for the burger culture in Singapore and Southeast Asia. I was lucky enough to have some face time with Yale Sheen, a partner in the Triple-O’s franchise in Singapore. We chatted a bit about the philosophy of the venture and what they were trying to do in Singapore. Yale, as it turns out, is a southlander, a So Cal dude, a mensch, a nice guy and a fellow devotee of that most honored of so cal traditions, In-n-Out Burger. This brings a smile to my face and twinkle to my eye, because having an Ops guys who understands the joy of having a fresh, made-to-order burger and how an MTO sandwich should look and taste can only be a good thing for a venture like Triple-Os. This I believe is a heavenly coincidence not to be wasted. I promptly order the chocolate shake… and it DOESNOT disappoint. Yale tells me that this outlet at The Star Vista opened a little over 6 months ago. i tell him that I’ve never had White Spot burgers outside of BC, and was pleased that one of my fellow Unilocalers, Mark D had reviewed the place favorably, piquing my interest. Anyway, we chatted about a great many things food and So Cal related, the distillation of which I will pass along to you, dear reader, as The Skinny. The Skinny: 1. All burgers are made to order. This means that unlike the King or the Klown, your burgers aren’t made ahead of time and held under a heat lamp. The wait, is worth every painfully anticipatory second. The burgers having just come off the griddle are juicy because, each chilled patty is slapped right on sealing the juices in. Because the burgers don’t sit around after that, the juices never get the chance to leak back out. 2. All the buns are baked fresh. No frozen, portion-controlled mealy or powdery whatchamacallits. The burger is after all about the patty, and the bun while not needing to be stellar should be of a quality that does not take attention away from Joe Beef. Triple-O’s buns do that very admirably. Soft, pillowy and the near-perfect platform for a burger performance. 3. The patties are made from Australian beef. They are chilled en route and not frozen. As alluded to earlier, they are slapped on a hot griddle the very moment your order comes in. These are done to medium well-well(My personal preference for a patty done medium-rare, when the food safety conditions will allow it). A burger should need nothing else more than 2 halves of a bun to hold this meat with so you can safely and neatly eat it. Triple-O’s Singapore has a patty that will do the mother ship proud. A substantial irregularly shaped, craggy patty that yields nicely and is run-down-your-chin juicy, moderately redolent of the beefy tang of Australian beef. It does not disappoint. 4. Fixin’s. Ok. Serviceable. I will not say anymore than that. In this I cannot be trusted to be objective. I admire Yale and his bud’s venture to bring MTO burger culture to Singapore waaaaay too much to have harsh words for something as trivial as fixin’s. I believe a burger’s reputation should rest on the patty. Fixin’s detract from the basic philosophy of grinding a hunk of prime beef down to where you can rough– shape it by hand, slap it over open flame and cook it till so it’s too hot to hold in your bare hands and have to resort to using two slices of bread or two halves of a bun. That should be all there is to burger prep. Ok, maybe ketchup. Anything else is window dressing. 5. Hand-scooped shakes. If Yale is around, have him make you one. I recommend the chocolate. Silky smooth taste and mouthfeel. Sweet. Just like a chain milkshake should taste(much closer to Carls Jr and much less like the Klown’s). You’re not having a wagyu burger and washing it down with a gianduja shake. This is Triple-O’s after all. Have some respect, will ya?! I hear you can get beer at the other outlet?! That’s just news that’s going to upset my cardiologist.

This feels like an under-invested fast food franchise, It serves a fast food burger so it’s not gourmet, it probably uses mostly frozen franchise ingredients, BUT it does the job for the money and makes a mockery of some gourmet burger joints. I like.

This is a review of a solo dinner at Triple O’s by White Spot in the Star. First, I lived in Vancouver, BC for many years. British Columbia is the home of White Spot. I loved White Spot. I was very surprised when someone told me there was one in Singapore. Unfortunately, the first one(Asia Square) had very limited hours and it wasn’t easy for me to give it a shot. Then I heard about the second one opening in the new Star Vista mall. For a business meeting, I was in the area. I decided to drop by and check it out. This is a small place. It is clean and bright and wears its Canadian heritage with pride. The staff was friendly. They seemed quite surprised that I was excited to be eating there. You order at the counter. They give you a buzzer. When it is ready, you pick up your food. The food was very good. Double Bacon Cheeseburger Combo — I ordered the combo. My only real complaint is that I wish the soda was larger. The burger was very much in-line with a White Spot burger in BC. It just needed more Triple O sauce. Plus, the bun was very very soft and came apart. I think this may mean the buns are frozen. I really enjoyed this burger. It wasn’t as good as Omakase’s burger but it also wasn’t nearly as expensive. This is a burger that will certainly fill you up. The fries were some of the best I’ve had in Singapore. I would urge a lot of the other burger places in Singapore to swing by and check out Triple O’s fries. They were out of chocolate shakes. I had hoped to try one, Receipt(Dinner for 1 — $ 16.90): At almost $ 17 buck for a burger meal, Triple O’s by White Spot in Singapore is certainly not a bargain. But, for me, it was well worth it. Overall — I will be back. It is one of the best burgers I”ve eaten in Singapore. For a diner style burger, it is a tad on the pricey side. The folks working there are friendly. It is clean and neat. All around, it is pretty much what a White Spot(anywhere) should be.

Tried the cheddar bacon burger here. The ingredients were fresh(nice pickle and juicy beef!) and the burger was generally tasty. But it just didn’t scream spectacular or ‘you have to eat me again!’ The poutine is one of the special items here that you can’t easily get elsewhere and it was quite good. Although not as tasty as the ones in Montréal, I guess it is one of the few places in Singapore you can get them so you can’t really complain. This outlet is also rather new so they did take a long time to serve some of us. In fact, they missed out one of our orders and another one just took an extraordinarily long time to be prepared. But the store manager was genuinely sorry about the hiccups and gave our group a free top up of our drinks. So we were kind of appeased.
