Great interior and décor. Came here on a Monday night and had a couple of happy hour cocktails — drinks were good, but nothing outstanding and to be frank, a little weak. Overall, good selection and atmosphere but slight preference for sister bar Jigger and Pony a few doors down.

A #cocktail topped with a bunch of grapes(we’d already eaten half of them!) a slightly flat #spritz. The snow #crab with smoked oyster aioli, cucumber and edamame was light and delicate #dishofthenight. The #clams were perfectly cooked in a #delicious but slightly over salted sherry broth and good chunk of bread for sopping up. The fiancé’s steak was tender and perfectly rare, the chimmichurri was something altogether, very smoky. Friendly service, interesting space and appropriate ambient lighting @sugarhallsg #sugarhall #sugarhallsg #singapore #singaporefood #sgfood #burpple

Although everyone was after the wide variety of rums in the house, we were after the food. I only had one cocktail– which was San Juan with a lot of grapes on top. I thought the drink was fantastic! The staffs were very friendly, and the service was very good. It was a rustic, homey sort of interior with a hip/vintage feel. I came with my boyfriend, and we started off with just 2 entrees to start with which were: figs and tiger prawns. The figs were complemented with a fresh mozzarella, and I thought this was excellent. The figs had a rough texture of sugar on the outer skin, which was balanced with the smooth and soft texture of the mozzarella. The tiger prawns were savory and I must say it was a pretty good mix with the deep-fried floured pepper. Best to eat it with lime. We were both craving for some meat, so we ordered a steak. I had a medium rare rib eye steak with chimmichury sauce. My boyfriend said it didn’t taste like a chimmichury — I never tasted it but I thought it was pretty good anyway… We ordered some hand-cut fries to go along with our steaks– because we always need fries for our steaks! The meat was perfectly cooked for a medium rare. Overall the steak was good. Definitely would come here again fo some meat. After we finished our main course, we decided to look for a dessert. But I wanted to try more starters… It was very pig-like of me. We ended up ordering 2 starters, which made the waitress laughed because, who would eat starters again after the main course? Lol. The starters were: scallops and burnt pork sausage. I thought the scallops were okay — a little too buttery for my liking. The burnt pork sausage was pretty good too — it came with a really nice bread and grilled cabbage. I gotta say, the cabbage was excellent, it was soft and just perfectly cooked, almost didn’t taste like a cabbage at all. A pretty interesting combination with the pork sausage. Must. Come. Back.

A place in Singapore that specializes in rum cocktails… that’s a keeper. Sugar Hall takes me back to a nice Caribbean café with a tasty, international selection. I had both the burratta and the hanger steak which were quite delicious, but what took the prize was the delicious dark and stormy cocktail. The service was really good, and if you have a chance please make sure you take a look behind the bar for their amazing selection. Definitely recommended it for a nice dinner and drink. They also have some communal drink bowls which you should try with some friends.

Sugarhall is a comfortable, warmly lit casual bistro bar next door to the Jigger & Pony on Amoy Street. There’s a lot to like about Sugarhall, but there’s also not much that stands out. The bar specializes in rum so we ordered a tasting menu of three very old rums. While each was deliciously complex, it was a solid reminder of why I really don’t like rum. LOL. No worries. They have a complete bar where the capable bartenders can mix up any cocktail you want. The large dimly lit, simply decorated shop house space is comfortably furnished. Large tall tables with big stools and roomy lower banquet seats are great for catching up with a group of friends. The staff gets high marks for being very friendly and attentive. It’s unfortunate that the owners have dressed them all in buttoned up plaid shirts and nerdy bow ties. The uniforms say uptight lumberjack bookworm more than cocktail server. At the rear of the shophouse is a large window that looks into the brightly lit kitchen. Sugarhall is a bistro bar, but the food menu is where they fall short. The menu offers starters, knife & fork entrees and veggie side dishes) On a previous visit a month ago, five of us shared 6 dishes from across the menu and had mostly negative impressions. During last night’s visit, the same five of us bypassed the food menu completely. I wonder if the food is the reason why it was so easy to get a table on a Friday evening. As much as the owners want it to be, Sugarhall is not a restaurant.(If I am mistaken and it is a restaurant — it is not one that I would recommend). They should embrace the bar and serve food that compliments the cocktails. None of the strange selection of «gourmet-ish» starters(sardines, beetroot, sweetbreads) are what you want to find on a menu of a cocktail bar. The other 2⁄3 of the menu is filled with knife & fork entrees and veggie side dishes like a whole spring chicken(head included!) and grilled cauliflower. No matter how decadently prepared, not many are going to want to eat brussel sprouts or sauced burnt carrots while they enjoy a drink. The Good: The comfortable furnishings are perfect for a gathering of friends, the friendly & attentive staff are always nearby, the cocktails are adequately prepared. The Bad: I humbly vote they take an objective look at the uninspired knife & fork entrees and veggies menu and overhaul it into an all shared tapas menu suitable for a bistro/cocktail bar. The simple rustic décor is too basic and bland and the staff’s nerdy uniforms make them look like bookish simpletons. It’s all very uninspired and forgettable. The Verdict: A good place to meet friends for a drink or two. If you’re peckish, I suggest trying a shared dish to tide you over while catching up and then making a move for the front door when you’re ready for dinner. As much as I enjoyed my time here, I can’t recommend the food.

It’s sad that the only reviewer to eat here previously gave it a single star because frankly, I thought the food was pretty damn on point. We ordered a number of dishes, and(deep breath) the Roasted Beet Salad, Pork Chop, Burnt Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, and Cauliflower were all excellent, worth going back for dishes. The Lamb, Sweetbreads, and Bone Marrow were both strong dishes that while maybe weren’t above average, were pretty damn solid and we’d happily order them again. I do have to say that the calamari and foie gras profiteroles were off point though. The former a bit pungent and didn’t smell very fresh, the latter overly rich and needing salt to balance the cloying richness of foie gras, even in a dessert. The cocktails were good too but after saying all of that, the ambience really was quite offputting. While fine for a drinks location, the volume and crowd put up a literal wall of sound that makes any normal dinner conversation difficult if not impossible. Which is a pity, because the food was definitely enjoyable.

I gave this bar three stars because I have a generally neutral opinion about it. The drinks I had here were pretty good, nothing to shout about, but of standard cocktail caliber. I admire the fact that they infuse some of their own alcohols. I like the décor. I guess the only con about this place is that it doesn’t have something that I really relate to/love/want to come back for more. If friends suggest to meet here, I wouldn’t mind, but I wish they have some cocktail choices that would leave me wanting more. In general, this place just feels like a trendy bar just like every new trendy bar on the block.

To me, home is where I can hear the beautiful sound of cocktail shakers. After reading Sugarhall’s positive review in I-S Magazine, I figured I’d utilize my kiasu card to see if this would be my potential home away from home. :) Walking in on a Tuesday evening, I admired the warm(but dim) lighting, the rope light fixtures, red accents, and overall industrial interior. To be honest, I felt like I was back in Brooklyn(Red Hook? Gowanus, maybe?) walking into the local watering hole! I chose my seat at the bar and perused the menu. Their focus here is rum, but they do offer a few vodka and other spirits based drinks as well. Each cocktail has an indication of whether you should drink it based on your hunger level. I was quite full, so I decided to try the Bumbo Old Fashioned, which had aged rum(it was either 12 – 15 years) and included a cinnamon stick with burnt ends, meant to slowly infuse flavour in the drink. I thought it was a lovely way to end my evening; however, I wish it was a bit stronger, as I only had a slight buzz after 2. What I really appreciated was the non-bullshit music; the beats were fantastic and I loved the mixes(think Ludacris’ «When I Move» set to a reggae beat.) Believe it or not, the music was what upped my initial 3.5 star rating up to a 4. I can’t speak for the food, nor can I say this would totally be my home away from home as cocktails go for $ 22 a pop. But I wouldn’t mind stopping by here again for a low-key weekday drink or to start the weekend.

Not worth… ATALL!!! First, they sell u a sausage platter for $ 32 with 3 small sausages. Kidding me? Then, the spring chicken is served w head and legs still on. Bear in mind, this ain’t a Chinese restaurant. Bottom line, they got 3 strikes in one — never ever again!!!
