This restaurant left me speechless on a few accounts. On service: I was served by a waiter who gave me a gin and tonic when I asked for a shot of hard gin and when I politely told him my order was wrong… «Oh I already told my colleague, I think she mixed it up» And then he just stood there. I don’t know what was more appalling — his little blame game or him thinking that the customer needn’t be served anymore after putting the blame on someone. On food and experience: I’m no stranger to molecular gastronomy and the fancy foodwork that comes with it but this restaurant did neither well. Most places try to cover up their lack of experience and evident flavour incongruities in that field with novel approaches to dining and conveniently capping the experience as sensory dining. That kind of spectacle is persuasive, and I usually don’t mind it but Sorrel: Unremarkable food aside(none of the plates served were in any way memorable and when you are paying a good 3 figures for a meal — without any wine — you’d expect at least one dish to be memorable.), my senses also weren’t stirred, so no, didn’t take anything to the next level for me. I would say Sorrel did its show poorly, except I don’t think they had much at all.

Before I begin, let me stay that after spending $ 150 on a 7 course dinner, I was still starving! The food came in courses, and the varieties, textures, and flavors were refreshing. Some hits and misses, though, overall a pleasant experience. Other than that, it was ok. My benchmark was The Tippling Club’s 11 course meal at $ 350 per person, and probably about 6000 calories. I was exploding by the end of that experience. But by the end of this experience, I went with my friend and chowed down to some larger portions of exquisitely chocolate dessert at Mad About Sucre. My next review. There are much better places to have dinner, and I definitely don’t consider it value for money, or intend on returning.

Had a 3-course lunch here. Wonderful place for a meal and good conversation. The menu was interesting, the staff was very attentive, and the ambience was just the right mix of casual and chic(it wasn’t too ‘atas’). Food here felt like it was very carefully crafted, no wasted space on the plate. Every aspect was full of intent and this shows through how well everything worked(ie. Basil Madeleines). It’s a little bit on the pricy side, but definitely worth the money if you think about how much goes into the food before you!

So first off — only choice is between a 5 course and 7 course. Wine selection was not too long but pretty good and not overpriced(by Singapore standards). Tried the 5 course menu for dinner. A bunch of amuse bouche to start, most memorable was a foam kind of thing with a sour juice to finish off. Appetizers were all good — egg + seafood dish was interesting. Main — had some wagyu which was very tender. Also had the truffle pasta which was an optional add-on. Definitely recommend it ! Dessert — menu said mixed fruit but what came out was more of a fruit dessert. Overall portions look very small as the plates are huge but after the meal I was quite full. Would go back. Ambiance is casual but chic(can see kitchen, some weird paintings on the wall… sort of like a speakeasy). Lighting not too dark, makes it a bit more casual.

Ok, so I went back and tried the 7 course menu. It did not disappoint. The care, time and love that goes into the dishes, small taster snacks and wine selection is very very close to perfection. While the crowd at my first visit(the opening week) was comfortably small; it was a full house on this occasion. The floor staff were made to run for their pay but service was, never the less, excellent. I am not going to go into the various dishes but the hand dived scallops with foie gras and carrot sirup was heavenly. Next time I’ll skip the menu eat what they serve …
