Sophie Bakery is a relatively newer addition to Novena Square that does French baked goods including different breads, buns, tarts, cakes and macarons. However, I’m not sure whether they still do the full range of products as whenever I get to the bakery after work, a pretty narrow selection is left. They don’t really do much replenishing of their stuff which although means sometimes you don’t have much to choose from, there isn’t much wastage at the end of the day. Their buns are a nice doughy chew with a slightly sweet taste. Their chocolate chip buns are very popular and if you go too late in the evening, they will be all gone. The chocolate croissant and ham and cheese bun is pretty good too. The olive bread is really full-flavoured and generously spiked with chopped black olives. They also have a coffee machine and a couple of high tables and a long counter table so you can enjoy your snack with a coffee if you want to. I’m afraid I’ll have to somewhat agree with Debbie T’s earlier review of their cookies though. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them nasty but they are really nothing much to shout about. Neither crispy nor chewy, they feel lao hong/stale like moisture has gotten into them. The taste is also distinctly unremarkable. Perhaps adding on to their effort to cut down on food wastage, they also have a deal nearer to closing time where you can buy 3 items and get the lowest-priced item for free deal. This applies to all items in the shop. You’ll know when they deal is on because they announce it to every customer that comes into the shop.

Cookies are nasty – too sweet and buttery… yuck! The croissants aren’t bad, but Sophie’s specialty is actually her tarts. Try the peach tart if you can! It’s sweet, sticky, buttery. oh delicious! I also recommend the champagne bread. There was small sample basket when I arrived and I swear I ate about half of the basket! Bear in mind now, I’m on a gluten-free diet! Or, limited-gluten-free? Ah, whatever diet I’m on, I’m be back again for more peach tarts!
