I was not a huge fan of this branch. It seems they try«too hard». They have a «Fast-food» style branch with air conditioning which is great, however it really is not the Punggol Nasi Lemak I know and love. There are set menus which I am sure is good for those who are indecisive, however I normally know what I want and like to order al la carte — the sets confused me. All the ingredients are behind a screen which makes it hard to see which is the freshest at that particular moment. My favourite brach has everything on display and is easy to see what is the best at any one moment. This place seems too. commercial. The portions appeared smaller than normal which is a shame. All in all it is ok, but not one I will be rushing back to — I will stick to the one in Katong.

the humble nasi lemak has come a long way! and ponggol nasi lemak has been serving up it’s fragrant version with crispy sidekicks for more than 35 years! the transformation from the hot, grimy coffee shop setting with long queues in hougang to a modern, clean, air-conditioned setting with fast food speed is now complete. may i present to you their third outlet which is, thankfully, more centrally located and less east bias. parking can be competitively challenging even though they do have prime URA coupon lots right next to their shop. everyone has their favourite combo and they do have four set menus to cater to some. there’s even a vegetables-laden option, which i do like much! so my suggestion is to get one of the basic sets and then add on what you crave for that day. for fans of the deep fried, you must get the chicken wings, drumsticks and/or skins! i got all of the above! definitely better than KFC and comparable to, or even better than jollibee! special mention has to go out to their chicken skins. and as if the deep frying of them skins was not sinful enough, they had to sweeten it with black sauce, zest it with some curry leaves and finally further spice it up with pepper and chilli! so do get the large serving if sharing or you guys will be fighting over the very last piece of skin. do however skip the sotong balls as the ones at old chang kee are better and cheaper! and don’t worry too much about the oiliness as long as you remember to order their tart, almost cranberry like, iced hibiscus tea to wash it all down. wait, have i not spoken about the main actor yet? the rice, nasi, is not mushy but al dente grainy and evenly coated with coconut’s saturated goodness! *we interrupt this review to bring you a word from the surgeon general: do eat in moderation!*
