This is my favorite place for the Chinese raw fish salad. It is super old school and does not care about presentation. The sliced raw fish is tossed with a simple dressing of sesame oil and topped with shredded vegetables, cut red chili padi and fried shallots. Lime is included if you wish to have a bit of tang to it. Have it with a bowl of porridge(congee) and it makes a satisfying meal. The porridge is Cantonese style so it is more smooth and gruel like. There are many types of porridge available — fish, peanut, cuttlefish, century egg. I have tried the yam cake and chee cheong fun which are ok. They also sell rice dumplings too. It may be quite hard to find this stall unless you are really familiar with the place. Look for #02−166. It is along the same row as a corner stall which sells fried dough stick and fried dough food like butterfly and ham chee peng.

Cheap and Wonderful Yam Cake and Chee Cheong Fan! Chinatown Food Complex is a maze of food and drinks for the uninitiated. There are too many stalls here and you can get lost just looking for something to eat. Sometimes, too many choices is not a good thing. This stall with the big pink signage is one you have to try… everything they sell seems to sell well but the freshly made chee cheong fan and yam cake is the winner for me. Occasionally i have the fish porridge too and it’s good too. Really cheap and good food. Try speaking cantonese to the vendors. It’ll make you feel like an asian original.
