Augustiner am Platzl

typisch bayrisches Wirtshaus, was soll man anderes sagen :) Wer es richtig voll mag, bleibt gleich unten im ersten Raum hocken, wer es etwas ruhgier mag verschwindet nach hinten, respektive oben.
Das Bier ist lecker und absolut bezahlbar, ebenso das Essen, auch wenn hier die Preise dem ein oder anderen sauer aufstoßen werden, wenn es in die Richtung «echte Essen» und keine Brotzeit zwischendurch geht. Trotz oder gerade deswegen (?) bin ich immer gerne hier, kurz rein, Bier, Wurstsalat, g’mütlich alles verputzen und dann frisch und aufgewärmt (so denn Winter ist) wieder raus.

Avoid this place if you are going to spend less than 30 euro. They won’t let you use your credit card for under 30 euros.

Excellent food and service. Not all of the staff speaks English so it helps to know some German.
The menu is traditional German food and is reasonably priced. The beer selection is fantastic, and I love everything on the menu but Radler is my favorite

Augustinier es la marca de cerveza más popular en Münich (y la más antigua), así que no es raro encontrar restaurant o bares de la misma.
El lugar es amplio, con un estilo muy tradicional: mucha madera y mozos bien vestidos. Fueron muy cordiales e hicieron los posible para poder entendernos, la verdad que de la atención no me puedo quejar.
No fui a comer, sino exclusivamente a tomar cerveza. La media pinta no existe en Alemania así que lo mínimo que podés pedir es una pinta; si querés menos de eso podés pedir un «schnitt», que es básicamente un culito de cerveza y el resto espuma. Cuesta prácticamente lo mismo que una pinta, así que no tiene mucho sentido.
Probé una variedad que se llama Edelstoff: es una cerveza rubia que se hace con granos seleccionados, se supone que es una de las cervezas de mayor calidad de la marca. Además, supuestamente no se exporta, así que sólo se consigue en Alemania.
No sé si recomiendo este lugar en particular, lo que recomiendo es no dejar de pasar por un bar o un «biergarten» o probar estas cervezas.

It’s located right across from the touristy Hofbrauhaus, but serves better beer in a more traditional setting. If you go early you can grab a table easily but later on when people can’t get into HBH they come here. Upstairs is my favourite place to go as it can be a bit quieter. Their half chickens are amazing. Great service.

Da ich sehr früh in München gelandet bin kam ich noch rechtzeitig zur Weißwurstzeit in der City an. Zu früh, das Platz öffnete erst um 10.00 Uhr. Begraben habe ich die Vorstellung dass in München noch die Traditionen gepflegt werden uns man zum Stammtisch geht. Im Platzl war ich von 10 – 11 Uhr der einzige Gast. viel mehr kam bis 12 Uhr auch nicht. So wurde ich natürlich umsorgt mit bestem Service.
Ich mag diese bayrische Wirtshausatmosphäre, aber lieber wenn es etwas voller ist. Aber das Augustiner schmeckt mir nun einmal besser als das Hofbräu.
Die Weißwürste aber perfekt, nicht zu fettig, prall und die Pelle leicht ab zu ziehen. Der Pott süßer Senf auf dem Tisch und a gute Brezen. Das Weißbier vollendete das Essen.

Danach noch ins Hofbräuhaus geschaut, da tobte schon der Bär. Das nächste Mal dann doch a schlechteres Bier.

I completely understand the frustration with tourists… especially the tourists who find this place after having left or not been able to sit in the nearby Hofbräuhaus. However, I’m not sure it justifies the general behavior of the staff. People are generally accommodating until they realize that you are not a local (my German is quite good, but my accent gives me away) and then you might as well eat somewhere else.
The food was not of quality to make up for the service. The beer was poured hastily and angrily. We witnessed the staff arguing with a couple, and shooing another group away.
Our biggest achievement was that we seemed to partially gain an inkling of respect from the bartenders because we did not speak much, drank, and got out of there.
I give it two stars because we were able to sit and drink in relative peace.

After rushing out of Hofbräuhaus due to its craziness we stumbled on this restaurant, and it was not a great experience. After sitting down, the waitress immediately gives us a basket of pretzels along with the menu. After asking what one dish was she left and didn’t come back until she had the dish ready which I never actually ordered. The food itself was ok nothing exceptional. At the end we were charged for the pretzels we never ordered. Overall the food was ok, but service is just plain terrible.

Un muy buen lugar y un camarero argentino muy simpático. El codillo genial y un postre que tarda 20 minutos en hacerse (no recuerdo el nombre) está simplemente espectacular.

Spontan mit meiner Frau im Augustiner eingekehrt um ein Helles zu trinken. Leider gab es draußen keinen Platz mehr, aber im Innenraum war zu der Zeit (ca. 17 Uhr) noch genug Platz.
Die Atmosphäre ist, wie man sie sich in einer Gastwirtschaft vorstellt: Urig gemütlich.
Zusätzlich zum Bier habe ich mich dann noch zu einem Obazda hinreißen lassen.
Seeeehr lecker.
Das Helle war übrigens auch köstlich!
Aufgefallen ist mir der sehr freundliche zuvorkommende Service. Top!

The decision was made — rightfully so — that in the short time we had in Munich, we would pay the famous Hofbrauhaus a visit but it probably wouldn’t be worth the time to wait for beer and food, but that the Augustiner would give us all the ambiance, the experience, and the quality of beer and food of a traditional Bavarian beer hall without the ridiculous wait.
Well… Augustiner certainly hit some of the goals we had for it. Being taken to the lower level dining area and arriving in the late afternoon, there was no crowd, so being seated quickly was a plus. Speedy and friendly service was also a nice perk and, while still a super touristy beer hall, there was something nice about having televisions tuned to Bundesliga matches above the bar area that at least gave the impression that locals visited this place. As someone who likes darker beers, the Dunkel is very nice, albeit I thought it was on the weak side.
But unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. The visual of the enormous potato dumpling was impressive on first sight until you start eating into it and discover, instead of this creamy, rich texture you expect, it’s more like you’re slogging your way through an enormous and dense, savory gummi ball. By no means does it taste bad — it’s potato sitting in delicious meat juice, after all — but it’s just a chore to eat.
The pork knuckle was prepared much better — cooked to a wonderful, fall-​of-​the-​bone level of extreme tenderness — only ruined again by what should have been an amazing square of fried pork skin, so overcooked that, instead of being this crisp accompaniment to the pork knuckle, it was this hard-​as-​glass sheet that refused any attempt to bite into it or cut with a knife. Nope, nope, nope.
As the meal progressed, the restaurant filled fast with both locals and tourists. Off the beaten path, this place is not. And as someone who as yet to visit the famous Hofbrauhaus, I have no idea how the food compares. But my expectations in the future for Munich’s world renowned beer halls has taken a slight hit. While the service, the beer, and the pork knuckle were good, the overall experience was pretty meh. I’m inclined to try other beer halls on future visits to Munich.

Bei weitem das schrecklichste Restaurant in München bisher. Wir hatten das Gefühl völlig unwillkommen zu sein. Schliesslich wurden wir in eine Ecke gepfercht. Wir bestellten was Einfaches und Schnelles, da wir hungrig waren; Kartoffelsalat und grünen Salat sowie Bier. Es war schrecklich laut und stressig in dem Lokal. Die Salate waren eiskalt und voller Zwiebeln und sehr kleine Portionen. Ungeniessbar. Wir wollten etwas Brot zum Salat. Erst brachte der Kellner Bretzeln anstatt Brot. Nach nochmaligem Hinweis gabs dann doch noch zwei mickrige halbe Scheiben Brot, die schlussendlich ganze 2.50 € kosteten! Schlussendlich liessen wir den Salat stehen. Einzig das Bier war okay. Überteuert, ungemütlich und unfreundlich. Da gehen wir nie wieder hin.

Freitag Abend noch einen Tisch bekommen mit meinen Kollegen aus Berlin. Sehr gastfreundliches Personal, nette Gäste.käsespätzle von der tageskarte waren super lecker und die Portion super satt machend. Essen kam trotz voller Hütte sehr schnell.

After hearing about all the reviews that Augustiner am Platzl was so much warmer and better tasting than Hofbrauhaus, I set the bar high. Sadly, that bar was not met. My husband and I ordered a pretzel and the mixed plate with duck and half a pork knuckle to share… and of course a handful of beers. The pretzel was hard and cold and the plate of meats left more to be desired. The meat wasn’t tender and the knodel was gummy and too soft. The day before at HBH, our pork knuckle was succulent, tender and crispy and had an amazingly addictive knodel. I was hoping I would be able to find that here without the crazy environment.
Service was typical and the atmosphere was nice, but the food in my opinion was not the best we’d had in Munich.

I was not a beer drinker until my friend made me chug a liter of this.

Bier schmeckt und preislich mit 7,20 pro Maß in Ordnung. Essen eher unterer Durchschnitt bei viel zu hohen Preisen.

Das Augustiner am Platzl bietet urige Atmosphäre verteilt auf 2 Geschoße mit mehreren unterteilten Räumen. Das ist gleichzeitig meiner Meinung nach der größte Vorteil gegenüber anderen Wirtshäusern wie z. B; dem Paulaner, denn dadurch sinkt der Lärmpegel deutlich.
Bier habe ich wiedermal keines getestet, dafür habe ich aber den Schnaps mit gut bewertet.
Gegessen haben wir hier leider nicht, es sah jedenfalls sehr gut aus und roch auch so.
Der Kellner war sehr freundlich, lustig und auch schnell. Die Preise waren fair.

Preis ist gut und fair !! Schnelle Bedienung und tolles Bier! Ein sehr gutes Preis leistungsverhältnis !!

A great bavarian beer hall. If you’re a tourist and the Haufbrauhaus is a little too ruckus for your taste, give this place a go. Plus the beer (in my opinion) is better. Definitely try the Edelstoff — it’s my favorite light beer in Munich.

Uriges Lokal mit Charme, aber öftmals leicht gestressten Bedienungen.
Speisenauswahl ziemlich beschränkt im Gegensatz zum Augustiner Keller oder Augustiner am Dom, aber sehr guter Schweinsbraten mit intensiver Dunkelbiersoße. Vegetarier müssen sich mit Knödelgröstl oder Salat zufrieden geben. Wartezeiten sind ok und können mit hervorragendem Bier überbrückt werden ;-)

The meats were good. Not the most tender, but still flavorful. The dumpling was a bit on the softer side.
Tasted wonderful with beer (duh).

Three different beers pouring from tap (Edelstoff, Helles, Dunkel), plus a handful of additional Augustiner beers from the bottle (including their hefeweizen and pilsner). Half and full liter pours are available from tap, and half-​liters were priced well at € 3.40−3.65.
AUGUSTINER EDELSTOFF (3,60 €)
This was definitely good beer.
I don’t normally drink beer, but this will change my heart.

This is a typical Munich lunch place. Loud and busy. The food is served quickly and is very good. Community tables so don’t expect privacy. Very filling and worth the experience but not «fine dining».
Easy to find right in the heart of the old town. Can shop and eat all in one easy trip.

Der Augustiner im Tal ist rundum eine typische Münchner Wirtschaft.
Das Essen ist deftig und gut, die Bedienungen sind flott und nicht zu freundlich, das Bier hervorragend… und ab und an kann man auch mit dem Wirt einen netten «Ratsch» halten.
In unmittelbarer Nähe zum Hofbräuhaus bietet der Augistiner im Tal eine nette und sympatische Alternative. Hier sieht der Touri — wenn er sich reintraut — noch ein echtes Stück München…

They were staffed really good (just before the start of Oktoberfest). Very fast and friendly service. Don’t like the whole set up and interior. There are better places to go to. The food was average and the prices ok.

Had lunch here. The food was Ok, not the best in Munich, as advertised. Service was good. Reasonable prices. Nice to be seated outdoors, in the summer.

This is the way a beer house should be. Sure the large mass ones are fun for large groups and people watching. However if you want better quality beer (my German butcher says best in the land) and a solid pan fried laeberkase with a fried egg and potato salad, look no further

Gemütlich ist es schon, das Augustiner. Und beliebt wohl nicht nur bei den Touristen, denn der Laden war voller Einheimischer in Tracht und sich hatten alle ihre schönen Bierseidl vor der Nase.
Bierpreise sind ok, aber der Obatzter ist eine sehr überschaubare Portion und dazu viel zu teuer (8,50) für 3 Scheiben Brot und 3 Bällchen angemachten Käse.
Die Bedienung ist flott, aber nicht zu freundlich. Bei Trinkgeld bedankt sie sich auch nicht.
Auf ein Bier kann man schon mal hingehen, zumal es im Schuhbeck’s Eck eine angenehme Abwechslung ist, aber Stammkneipen-​Niveau hat es nicht.

Sehr gutes Essen, Bier schmeckt gut, Personal ist sehr freundlich und sehr flott mit der Bestellung, Alles in allem sehr sauber und auf jedenfall ein Besuch wert, ich komme wieder macht weiter so

Zum Biertrinken absolut okay, gemütliche Wirtshaus-​Atmosphäre, beim Essen sind die Portionen sehr übersichtlich. Wenn man Leberkäs’ essen will, lieber auf dem Viktualienmarkt beim Metzger genießen.

Klasse Bierlokal im Herzen Münchens. Wer ein zünftiges Bier mag, ist hier genau richtig.
Die knurrigen Kellnerinnen würden vom Charm her aber auch gut nach Berlin passen: Ein Brezelkorb wurde uns nicht auf den Tisch gestellt, erst nach genauer Angabe der Stückzahl wurden uns diese serviert. Naja…

Durchschnittlich guter Laden mit normalem Essen. Wobei mein Schweinsbraten etwas trocken war.
Service gut und freundlich. Kann man hingehen.

Es ist ein Touristenladen und genauso wird man hier behandelt, dass heißt, je schneller du wieder draussen bist um so besser, der Platz ist sofort wieder besetzt, hier geht die Tür den ganzen Tag nicht zu, es ist laut und ein gedränge wie beim Sommerschlussverkauf, das Essen geht gerade und das Augustiner schmeckt sowieso !

Dieses Mal ausnahmsweise nicht nach RK ein Restaurant für den Mittagstisch ausgesucht, (sonst wäre es das Hard Rock Café nebenan geworden, mit einer Durchschnittsbewertung von 5,0 offensichtlich ein wahrer Gourmettempel) sondern nach der Tafel vor der Türe «Augustiner vom Holzfass». Für alle Auswärtigen: In München ist Bier zum Mittagessen durchaus üblich ;). Also ab ins Augustiner, im inneren erwartete uns eine typische Münchner Bierwirtschaft, Bedienungen im klassischen Augustiner-​Dirndl, polierte Holztische, gemütlich. Auch das Publikum lässt gutes hoffen, zwar sind einige, aufgrund der Lage wohl unvermeidliche Touristen da, sonst aber hauptsächlich Münchner.
Unsere Bedienung war zwar nicht bayrisch, dafür aber freundlich und flott, das Bier hatte die erwartete Qualität, wenn jetzt noch das Essen zumindest akzeptabel ist, haben wir gut gewählt.

Tellerfleisch in der Brühe: Abgesehen vom Meerettich genau das was auf der Karte stand, 4 Scheiben von der Ochsenbrust, nicht zuviel Fett dran, zart mit Meerettich, Schnittlauch und guter Brühe. Keine Beilage, echtes «Low Carb”-Essen aber wohlschmeckend.
Gröstl von Blut-​Und Leberwurst mit Kraut: Auch hier war die Karte Durchaus wörtlich zu nehmen, Sättigungsbeilagen hätten wohl extra bestellt werden müssen. Aber die Qualität sowohl vom Kraut wie auch vom Gröstl ausgezeichnet, gut mit Majoran und Schmorzwiebeln gemacht, hätte ich selber auch nicht besser hinbekommen.

Und satt waren wir hinterher doch beide, war für Mittags genau richtig nur ungewohnt.

Fazit: Die schlechten Erfahrungen meiner Vorkritiker haben wir nicht gemacht, für die Münchner Innenstadt ist der Augustiner am Platzl ein wirklich empfehlenswertes Restaurant.

Anmerkung: 4 Sterne ist für mich das Maximum, was ein Restaurant dieser Klasse erreichen kann.

Einfach ein original Münchner Wirtshaus.
Mehr muss man nicht sagen. Hier komme ich immer her, wenn ich in der Stadt bin und authentisch essen gehen will.
Kein Nepp und kein Snob. Moderate Preise und schön gemischte Publikum. Und a sehr, sehr guats Bier aus’m Fassl Sehr zu empfehlen.

Ich kann mich dem bisherigen Lob zum frisch gezapften Augustiner aus dem Holzfass nur anschließen wunderbar! Die Bedienung ist schnell und freundlich, die Atmosphäre eine Mischung aus angenehm entspannt, urig und gemütlich hier kann man gut verweilen.
Ein Mal haben wir auch dort auch die Speisekarte ausprobiert und die Semmelknödel waren recht gelungen, ansonsten liefert die Küche primär mittelklassige Hausmannskost. Doch das verringert den Charme des Augustiners am Platzl keineswegs. 4 Sterne!

Located across from Hofbrauhaus, this competing beer hall is the «locals favorite» so it’s only 90% tourists. It certainly feels less intense and less packed.
Food: holy delicious schweinebraten! Big slices of roast pork with dumpling and gravy. Mmm…
Service: quick and efficient. Pleasant and not to be messed with, these ladies are «experienced».
Crowd: maybe a little older and less touristy than Hofbrauhaus. It’s lower key, cozier and I like it better personally.
Beer: the helles… delicious. I made sure to consume loads since it’s not available in the US.
Etiquette: baskets of pretzels are on the table, if you eat them you’ll be charged. Eat them anyway, they are delicious. Silverware and napkins are in the center too, as are coasters. Seating is communal so get to know your neighbors.

Einer der Klassiker in München direkt in der Altstadt und neben dem Hofbräuhaus.
Die Haxe war der Hammer, extrem knusprig, das Augustiner Bier wie immer super. Auf Sonderwünche wird gerne eingegangen wir ham uns sau wohl gefühlt!

After our efforts to score a table at the Hofbrauhaus next door, we managed to snag a table in the thick of 2^nd floor at Augustiner. And what a great spot it was!
Once the beers started flowing, and our seemingly endless supply of delicious eats started arriving, our night was made. We stuffed ourselves silly on delicious German beer (Augustiner, of course!), yummy cheese spaetzel, ridiculously awesome dumplings, and some of the best roasted pork we’d ever tasted!
Next time, Augustiner won’t play second fiddle to Hofbrauhaus. It’ll be our first stop!
