Again, a review for dealing with our large party of 12! They sat us down and cheerfully gave us the menus and specials quickly, it was so hot but they quickly put the fans on and gave us a lot of bottles of water for the table, bringing out warm bread and pots of standard and garlic butter. I had the Yorkshire pudding for starter, and the lamb for main, everything came out at good times, and no one was left waiting much longer than the first to be served at any point. The sides were wonderful, all good size portions and amazing gravy. If I was being seriously picky, the only thing I would say was the meringue on the lemon meringue pie wasn’t crispy on the top at all, but that’s personal taste, and it still tasted amazing! Wonderful food, wonderful service, and the best part was, other smaller tables there had service just as fast and friendly and didn’t suffer because of the large party, so they definitely know how to cope!

The menu offers a decent selection of options without seeming overloaded or complicated. The staff managed to achieve a wonderful balance between professionalism and affability. The dining room is comfortably small without feeling cramped. Like the menu, the décor is simple and straightforward, which lent itself to the relaxing atmosphere. It is a shame when a restaurant feels the need to impress its guests with a perplexing menu and an over-elaborate interior, but the Go Down does not fit into this category whatsoever. Overall, a highly pleasant meal without any unnecessary fuss.

Get there when the restaurant opens for the Early Bird deal, available Tue-Fri 5.50pm-7.30pm and Sat 5.30pm-6.30pm. Absolutely fantastic food. The best meal out I’ve had for a long time. Highly recommended!

The Go Down is a surprising good restaurant which can be found in the city centre of York. Its actually hidden below street level, which adds to the atmosphere of the place, but may cause casual diners to walk past and miss it altogether. Its a European/Mediterranean-style restaurant and the menu is pretty good — theres something on there which most people would like. All food is fresh and tasty — starters, main courses and desserts, and theres a decent range of drinks and wines to choose from too. The main dining area is comfotable and spacious, although admittedly I’ve never been in when its been packed. Its quite cosy and theres usually a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere in there. Service is pretty much faultless and always friendly. Most importantly, the prices are reasonable — a three course meal will set you back about £20 per person, which in this day and age is more than acceptable, and occasionally the restaurant promotes special offers to save you even more money. Worth a visit, but be prepared to walk past a few times before you manage to find it.
