Definitely unusual for Reading’s bustling bar scene, this stylish bar has ideas slightly above its station, which it almost nearly pulls off. When I visited I only saw the downstairs area, nice seating areas but unfortunate harsh downlighting made some positions impossible to sit in without sunglasses. On the night I was there it was 2-for-1 cocktails on a Saturday night, yet another sign of the tough economic times, I mean a Saturday night with a BOGOF offer? I thought they didn’t exist anymore! Anyhoo, the cocktails were very much catering for the female clientele. Most cocktails were fruit based and packed with sugar. The mojitos were rather amusing in that they came with another 3 inches of crushed ice(on top) of the already full glass. Bizarre at best. But why am I complaining, at 2 for 1 they were indeed a bargain. Apparently it turns into a meat market upstairs when the dance floor opens. We didn’t hang around to find out. A nice place for aspiring socialites or the average joe who seeks a value for money in their cocktails. Worth a peek, definitely.

Up until the last few years, Reading only had a few clubs, with most of the high street being dominated by bars and restaurants. Walkabout and Brannigans(or Shenanigans as its known locally) were really your only options. Sakura took the place of The Fez club, an urban style club. Out went the dingy corners and oddly tropical entrance, and in came a cocktail bar, flocked wallpaper, and disco light dance floor upstairs. The club is a great concept. The cocktail bar downstairs is relaxed during the day, and crammed full of suited and booted individuals. Great if you can bag a table. Upstairs is the nightclub. Last night I went, there were two gyrating dancers in bikinis, dancing around an old man on a bongo. Odd. It seems to draw a lot of the cash flashers of Reading, probably because its one of the only classy place to go. Aside from the people and the slightly dodgy entertainment, the music is generally good and the cocktails are nice. This is the club for anyone who feels a little too old for the Walkabout, and doesn’t fancy the drum and bass in Revolutions

Sakura is a bar with a dace floor that seems more like a club that seems out of no where. My mate took me here when I was visiting Reading and London. I wasn’t expecting this scene in a town like Reading. I had loads of fun. Great music, full service bar, and a large dance floor that lit up to the music. If your in the Reading area, I’d recommend to stop Sakura for a drink and a dance.
