This is a really cool place that I’ve been to twice now. There is a real mix of people that come here and that always makes for an interesting night. The music is varied too and the place is very funky!
Both times I have been really offered a fun night out so I’d recommend this place for a relaxed, good night out!

Great venue –Real mixture of people of all ages and styles, the venue has different music in each of the different areas from drum and base in the basement to reggae and ska in the main room upstairs area.
This is a pretty deceptive place it looks quite small from the front but is actually quite large once you get inside. Also has a large terrace are at the back which also has a couple of bars.
Serves the usual mix of drinks and spirits.

Had a wicked time with a really cool crowd. This place has reasonable prices, a good selection of drinks and a good atmosphere

Stuff of legend.
Friendly staff, decent prices, even the bouncers are cool — unless you behave like a tool.
Alternative music — none if the usual shit music that you get in bars.

OK, this is a bit of a dive bar, but I give it four stars due to the entertainment value, and the good memories I’ve got having gone here quite a few times.
The crowd is a wild mix, suited business men to your leather clad rockers and punks. The late license attracts all sorts of people which is no bad thing (well not so far). The hairiest moment I’ve had out there was when a drunk thug decided to be friendly and ‘join’ our party. No big deal though, it all went quite well.
Full bar, fussball table etc. Great heated patio area.
Distinct memories of one of my colleagues being refused service as he was too drunk. This is quite a feat at the turtle!

I love the PT. I met my husband that night and we later went to PT so has very special memories of our friends. Great music and people and open till late. I love the outside area at the back and the cocktails are very good considering the prices. Not too long a wait at the bar. haven’t been in a while, but only becasue we can’t get a babysitter! :o)

I wanted to give this place only 2 stars but my friend Suze loves this place so much that I had to give it one more star in her honor. I should say that the reason she loves it so much is because it’s where she used to go as a teenager. Be forewarned, going to the Purple Turtle is not advised for old fogies such as myself. It’s still really fun to dance and drink with the more able bodied and scantily clad young folks. This place is highly recommended for when you get kicked out of Hobgoblins.

Great place, full of so many different types of people — younger, older, scruffy, smart. You name it, you’ll find it there (although I once was refused entry for being ‘too smart’ — lol!).
Cheap, nice atmosphere and a great place to hang out. Never seen any fighting or trouble in the few years I have been going to this place.

The Purple Turtle is a place full of weed-​smoking hippies, quirky alternative students, a variety of goths and enough spilt drink to guarantee your feet will stick to the floor. Yet you still find yourself there week after week, taking advantage of the late opening hours. The place is friendly enough — perhaps a little too friendly — and the diverse crowds seem to mix well. The toilets are an interesting experience but by that time you’ve normally drunk enough not to care.

This is the sort of place where you can just relax and be yourself, no airs and graces, it is what it is, and I love it.
Packed full of normal, slightly crazy, and friendly down to earth people.
If I go out in Reading, I always make sure I end up here, I just feel cheated if I dont.
