Saw the high 4.5 star review and was Rey underwhelmed. Nice decent pub. Not big and a tiny outside area purely for a smoke! Beers ok, menu seemed okay. Nice pub but not a 4.5

This is the first place I went to upon my first trip to the UK for my friend’s wedding. Left Heathrow and went straight to Newbury. Got off the train and walked around the corner to the first place where I could get a beer, a bite to eat, and plug my phone in.
I had a wonderful time talking to the bartender while I sat and ate, drank, and read. It was midday and only a few other regulars were there, but I’d go back!
Only reason this isn’t a 5 star review is it seems like the beers were a bit expensive.

You could not ask for a nicer, friendler, warmer place in Newbury! The selection of ales/​ciders is brilliant. Only place to server Stowford Press (my fave!) and it is such a relaxing place to go after work for a couple or on a Sunday to nurse a hangover orrrr for a spot of lunch during the week! I have ate their a couple of times and the food is incredible. Definately recommended to every person I meet in the area. Love the place! In fact I am going this evening AND tomorrow :)

Haven’t eaten but wet sales doing OK. Good guest ale — essential for all Greene King pubs!

I used to know this place as a bikers pub so was very courteous when going in for a meal, and what a pleasant surprise with a very friendly welcome from the landlord.
Although when walking in to this pub i found it looked very plain with not much to look at and looked much the same as i remembered it to be.
The food was small but adequate maybe slightly disappointing but at least it was freshly cooked and home made, the vegetables not being over cooked as you can find with a lot of places.
The prices are just above average but considering you do get home made food this is acceptable.

Great pub, lovely food. Only downer is it gets really busy in the evenings so I prefer it at lunch time. Also parking this end of Newbury is getting to be a real pain.

This is a lovely place to go for lunch with a small child, or indeed without.
The staff are young and enthusiastic, the menu is varied, the food was excellent, and you can play connect four at your table.
Update:
We’ve now been going for Sunday lunch for a while. It is remarkably friendly, the menu is varied (whilst keeping the old favourites), and you can read all the Sunday papers. Our little girl claps when she realises we’re going here for lunch; and she can’t read or play connect four…
