Don’t order anything fancier than a burger and you won’t be too alarmed. Good setting and probably good in the summer as there is seating next to the water. It’s a fullers so no surprises with the beer. I felt slightly cheated paying 16.50 for a lamb dish which was very underwhelming and the portion was tiny, hence my opening sentence!

Reasonable Fullers pub with great summer seating alongside the canal. Has a tendency to get very busy especially on live music nights.

Pretty standard but good British pub but the location and setting aside the canal in central Newbury makes this awesome. Fab place to relax alongside the canal with a pint and a newspaper. A pint of cider however was £4.50 which I was amazed at!!!

Fantastic location on the canal and lock. Outside seating is perfect on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the water and warmth whilst sipping an ale.

This place trades on its location only, take lots of money if you want to buy a pint(thats available elsewhere in Newbury for less) or bankrupt yourself over a large glass of wine that’s equally available for less elsewhere too. The manager and staff deserve each other. The food is typical pub chain fare lacking taste, imagination or flare — funnily enough just like the manager! Much better almost everywhere else in Newbury town centre!

I fell in love with this place, great location over looking the canal. All round this is 10⁄10 for me as far as pubs go. I found the prices to be within reason(wouldn’t say it was cheap) but the quality reflects the price. Cold beer. hot and very tasty food. As a dog person I found it a very nice touch on that front to. And the staff were friendly, and quick on the ball. Food tasted fresh and quality ingredients. On the day I was there was some live music which I love and find it to be a dying tradition. To sum up, I find this pub a must to visit for anyone who loves a good relaxing drink and quality food, also to doggy crowd and music lovers. I have and will continue to recommend this pub to friends, and honestly I can’t understand the negative reviews previously left, it is not that pricey honestly come on.

Nice pub, great roof terrace for a summer drink. A bit pricy though.

The drinks here are over priced as is the food, i had a chicken & leek pie which should have come with mustard mash, which they didn’t have so i ended up with a very small piece of pie about ten chips and a pot of gravy that really is over priced at £9.75 i wont be eating there again

Long queues this weekend, why can’t they look at the weather forecast before doing the staff rota? Update July 2012 thunder and hail earlier, so enough staff! Music started an hour late, and shock horror the pub now has a TV. Now the second most expensive pub in Newbury, rather than the first.

I LOVE this place in the summer, great beer garden over looking the canal. It is lovely and the food is to die for! it is a little bit more expensive than most places but you get what you pay for. AND they are the only local place to server Fruli strawberry beer, my favourite after Stowford Press. If they served Stowfie, I would be there every weekend! LOVE the place. Also hosted a party with local band, it was brilliant. They served the most amazing buffet selection and were very accomodating and helpful when setting up.

A nicely decorated pub in the middle of Newbury. Reasonable food selection.

This is not really what you would call a traditional pub(what actually is one of those anyway?), it is more like a very tastefully decorated, if slightly expensive looking lounge room, with relaxing sofas, nuetral browns and a pleasant welcoming feel. Views from the large windows are really attractive, looking out over the River Kennett, green riverside plants, the pretty walkway along the water and the striking towers of St Nicholas church on the opposite bank. Extensive verandahs and outside decking provide plenty of space for the hardy, for smokers and for sunny jollificating when good weather permits. Staff were all very friendly and attentive(not busy when visited, so can’t comment on previous reviewers’ concerns). Our favourite Michel Roux Jr might have said that the orange, ginger and carrot lunchtime soup snack was a little ‘over-seasoned’. But the cute little soup pots were well presented on nice wooden platters with generous slices of soft, fresh rustic brown bread. Not cheap though, so don’t expect to find the value range — it ain’t there. Though not reviewed in the evening, the pub is apparently a favourite watering hole for the local gay community later on.

A rather expensive pub situated in the heart of Newbury, the LSB(Lock Stock & Barrel) has the added advantage of being situated alongside the Kennet & Avon canal making it a lovely place to sit outside in the summer. Bar prices are higher than your standard Newbury establishment, and food price maintain these level of prices — however the food is presented nicely and is very enjoyable fare. Staff service is okay here at the LSB, but when the pub is busy service can be a little discontinuous and haphazard at times.

This pub has a gorgeous outside seating area where you can admire the canal, river, and eponymous lock. It is a lovely place to sit on a late summer afternoon… As long as you don’t mind the cigarette smoke — if you’re a smoker this must be the best pub in Newbury! I can’t comment on the food, as it seems(from a phone call) that babies aren’t welcome if you plan to dine there(lost some, potentially, good customers there they did!). So, not my ideal pub — but if you don’t have a small child and do smoke it must be a little oasis.

Nice little pub especially on a summers evening if you can get a table outside next to the canal. Service was ok.
