I’ve been here several times, always with a group of people. The staff are fine and the interiors are decent, if a bit on the boring side. As far as customers go, there’s a mix of different looks, and you’ll definitely see a few guys in leather, rubber, or skinhead gear at some point in the evening.

This is a man’s man pub, well I think that is how they want to be known. The men only after 7 policy certainly helps this perception as it was becoming a bit of a hag heaven in recent years. The recent refurbishment has done wonders for this place, now a worthy competitor for the eagle. All moody modern lighting and flat screens. Although they could have spent more time doing up the bathrooms rather than… well I will leave it to your imagination what goes on in there. Still a nice place for a few nice cheap drinks in the company of the like minded before venturing out into the rest of cez village.

Though I haven’t experienced The Rembrandt as a hotel, so can’t speak for that side of it, I’m glad, if the service I received at the bar is anything to go by. And Alexandra S.‘s review is pretty terrifying! I popped in here with American Gran, because American Gran loves pubs and she loves the gays. The second she clapped eyes on it, she was all like«oh wow a real pub, in the gay quarter! Oh we have to go in!!!» So we did, and we stayed for one drink before leaving. It’s not that it’s an actively bad pub, not really. Just that there’s nothing good about it. The service is slow and when they finally serve you, they are uncommonly rude. American Gran had some beer or other and announced it ‘ghastly’, and my red wine was almost undrinkable, and I’ll drink pretty much anything. The place is OK inside; the seating is comf enough and despite Alexandra’s accounts of grosssness and health and safety contraventions, everything seemed clean. It’s just all a bit worn and past its best. To be completely fair, this place would be a 3 star in a small town or village, but when there are about a million better places to go in Manchester, and a good many in Canal Street itself, it just is not up to par.
