For anyone that misses Chinese style breakfasts, this isn’t a bad stop! It’s situated underneath the bridge outside the DLR Tower Gateway station. It serves up traditional Chinese breakfasts and congee is usually what I miss the most! It’s slightly out of my way en route to the office, but I could manage a detour once a week for this

Zen Pot is a welcome addition to an area that started out very quiet when I moved here 12 years ago but is slowly benefitting from the gentrification of surrounding areas. They only opened last week so they welcome any feedback, and the staff here are really friendly. So far they are only open weekday lunchtimes and serving coffee in the morning(more on that later) but they have plans to expand on their opening hours as the business grows. So onto the food. They serve 3 types of dish, all served in takeaway packaging similar to what you might find at Itsu or Wasabi, but they do have a seating area and they have a twist on the usual corporate chain store stuff. You have a choice of Tang Mian noodles, where you get to choose from a number of flavours and different types of noodles. I started with the Chicken Shitake with brown rice noodles and although I first found the taste bland, there are plenty of sauces available to spice things up a little. Their idea is to keep the base meal light and healthy, using minimal oil, and leave it up to the customer to flavour it to their taste. They also have the Cai Fan which is a sort of Chinese Paella, again with some different flavour options. I didn’t get to try it today but it looks delicious and I’m going to try it tomorrow! Finally they have another dish called Congee which is a kind of rice-based porridge. As with the other choices there are different flavours to choose from here too. Now I know I just used the word ‘finally’ so there should be nothing more to add but I also said I’d come back to the coffee. Like most new independent places that are popping up, these guys also pride themselves on their coffee. Whilst it isn’t up to the standards of the nearby White Mulberries which won coffee shop of the year 2014 it is better than the stuff you get from the bigger coffee chains. At £1.80 for a café latte I can see myself coming here for my morning fix on my way to work. So there you have it. A welcome addition to the area!
