I’ve haven’t been here for a few years and thought I’d give it another try as on my last visit I found it to be below par. I can’t deny that the exterior and window display look fantastic with coloured cupcakes, cookies and sponge cakes and the seating area very quaint. However if I have to be brutally honest, the cakes aren’t the best your ever going to eat, in fact I would say that what you’d find in the Tesco opposite better. The coffee tasted instant and the staff do need to work on the customer service. They do say one of the golden rules of running a successful business is consistency but they should add that it has to be good to begin with.

I swung by here on my way to Highgate Cemetery for a bit of sustenance before a morning of gravity.(get it?) Anyway, I just stopped in for a pastry and some coffee. The coffee was actually really nice and the almond croissant was incredibly tasty. I also had a Portuguese tart. Tasty again. There were a lot of savory treats in the display as well, as I wanted to try them too. So if I’m ever back in the area(although highly doubtful), I’ll probably come back for some delicious treats. But if you’re in the area, it’s definitely a worthwhile place to stop in at to avoid the two chains down the street that are practically next door neighbors to each other.

I wonder how many people wander around Hamstead heath, and then emerge in Highgate in need of tea and cake? The Highgate Pantry is perfectly located for this(it’s on the high street, rather than the top of Swain’s lane as it is shown on the Unilocal map.) We popped in to warm up with hot drinks, and replenish our sugar levels. The variety of cakes is brilliant, and although I was quite tempted by the sandwiches and stuffed croissants, I couldn’t resist a strawberry tart. It wasn’t the best cake I’ve ever had, but it was pretty decent and gave me a happy sugar rush. If you head down the stairs to the loo, there is a gorgeous smell of newly baked cakes… so I assume they must make most of their food on the premises.

YUM. This tiny little pink shop across from the Highgate School is fantastic for lunch. Greek salad and a perfect slice of veggie frittata for me, a ham and cheese melt and salad for the boyf – they also had amazing looking melts on croissant, which I’ll have to try next time. The real draw, though, is the vast display of sweet things in the window. We left with the biggest frosted donut I’ve ever seen and plans to come back for an apple strudel, plum crumble, or chocolate muffin. The selection is impressive for such a small place. There are only 5 little tables(best for 2 people each) crammed in so everyone is almost touching each other, but somehow this makes for a comfortable lunch environment – plus the staff were friendly and efficient(very important considering how busy they were!) In the end, I walked the 4 miles home in an attempt to burn off that donut… but it was totally worthwhile!
