I’ve been here twice and both times that haven’t had haddock. The woman at the counter tried to push cod on me, seemingly unaware of sustainability issues(whereas a lot of places serving cod will emphasise it’s been sourced sustainably, which may be a dubious claim but at least they acknowledge the issue). She was also just generally quite grumpy and unhelpful. The meal I just finished was bland beyond words, despite salt and vinegar. It must have been chronically underseasoned. The mouthfeel was OK(sounds weird but important in fish and chips) and the price was OK(£6.50 for plaice and medium chips). But that’s about it.

Probably one of the hidden gems of Camden Town. Some of the best fish and chips in town. Put it on your must visit liar even though it’s a little pricey.

Expect to see a lot of tourists here because apparently it’s in almost every other guidebook to exploring London. In a place where a British staple like fish and chips is ubiquitous, Poppies stands out because it is such a consistent, straightforward place. I wouldn’t say that the fish and chips here is mind-blowing, but it is good when you need a fix. Also, the waiters and waitresses are all in these super cute uniforms — and they also provide attentive service even though this place gets crowded quick. Solid place.

Consistently excellent fish and chips. I’ve visited this place about 20 times in the last two years, and had great food and service every time. Be interesting to see how their outpost in the market does.

Best FishChips ever ! I discovered this place just by walking into Camden Town and because I was hungry. And it is a come back to the 50’s. The music(with a band upstairs), the waiter/waitress and everything else come from«*Grease» movie lol ! Maybe it is more expansive than other place, but you have a big piece of fish. It is a little bit too long to have your dish, but only because it is cooking on place and fresh of course. Downstairs you can see the cooks working. You also have a few kind of fish, and other kind of meal. Great things if you want to go with friends who don’t like fish.

While vacationing in London, met up with a friend at Poppies for some good fish and chips! Definitely did not disappoint! Portions are big, chips are yummy and fish is definitely delicious! Mind you this was my only experience of fish and chips in London, but it was a great one! I just ordered the basic cod fish and chips for 13−15£(can’t remember exactly…) and a cream soda. The breeding on the fish was great because it didn’t flake off nor was it greasy. The fish was cooked perfectly as I tend to find fish and chips at other places tend to over cook the fish and it can become dry. The best part that earned the 5 stars was the free entertainment on Friday night! What a great band singing oldies! Fabulous!

This place is amazing! Came here on a week night with a friend and it was relatively empty, though we noticed a lot of people getting take away. The décor was cute and the outfits that the waitresses wear really kept with the theme. For appetizer we got CALAMARIRINGS and they were amazing! The best calamari rings I’VEEVERHAD! For main we got the CHICKENPIE and it was decent, a very standard English pie. Looking back I wish we had ordered the fish n’ chips, considering they claim to be #1 and finally for dessert we got the STICKYTOFFEEPUDDING and again ITWASINCREDIBLE! Wanted to order another one because it was too good The wait staff here is extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome coming all the way from America. It was a tad pricey for an American student budget but pretty standard for a London restaurant. I would recommend this to all my friends who want a bite to eat in the Camden area.

Ordered the Cod Regular Fish and Chips for 11.7 quid. 50s diner feel. Waitresses with cute aprons, slicked back gentlemen behind the bar. The fish itself wasn’t extraordinary so I was a bit disappointed. I did like that the dish came with tartar sauce and ketchup in cute little jam jars, but otherwise given the price, I wasn’t at all impressed. Perhaps the Pappy’s at Spitalfields is better?

This restaurant takes you back in time to the 60’s! The restaurant itself is fantastically decorated, even the loos! The food is great too, and the portions are massive! The food is made freshly in the kitchen, it is like a traditional fish and chip shop where you can see the chefs cooking the food with lots of home made sauces. Great for a Friday night treat!

Poppies fish and chip bar is OK. It’s expensive if you eat in so I took take away. I liked the fish and chips but the large cod was a bit small. I like this food but more would be good.

Again they ran out of large Cod on Saturday and told us they would have more on Sunday. They should know by now to order more at the weekends. So we went back at Sunday lunch time. I don’t know where they got fish from on Sunday. The place was busy, but the Large Cod was not large at all. It was mushy and the batter peeled off within a minute. The Chips were pale and very greasy. Maybe we should avoid here at the weekends.

Poppies fish and chips are some of the best in London. A few months ago, I got the cod and a side of chips and it was so freakin’ good. I ordered a cod with chips and it exceeded my expectations. — the batter was perfectly crispy while not being too oily. — the cod was also excellent — soft and moist — the chips were thick and not greasy(with some malt vinegar on top… oh my) Although Poppies is quite pricey, if your visiting London and want some great fish and chips look no further.

The fish was fresh and fairly good, but the batter was very bland, and the chips had no flavor at all. The entire meal was less than stellar to be quite honest, and the service wasn’t great either. Plus, two pieces of fish, some fries, and a coke simply don’t merit the £31 bill(about $ 50USD). The atmosphere was nice, and they seat you fairly quickly if you have a reservation, but overall, not impressed with the food or the price.

Possibilité de Take Away !

What’s a trip to london without eating Fish ‘n chips! Both the cod and fries ahem chips were fresh and crunch while still having substance with each bite. I guess for the time that we waited it better. Not a fan of the mushy peas so sue me, still think it’s kinda cool that the national dish of this place is served by poppies that is reminiscent of a 50’s diner in the USA

So when in London, you must have fish and chips. Right!?? My friends and family recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Several locations in London, we wanted to try it out here. Large restaurant, servers are friendly and uniforms are super cute. I ordered cod and chips and a side of mashy peas. It was nice, the fish was cooked well not too greasy, fish was nice and flakey, and the batter was just right not too thick or thin. The chip were also nice went well with the fish. The mashy peas was ok, was never a fan but it was nice to have some type of green with the meal. I’m pretty sure London has millions of fish and chips places, Im glad we tried this place out.

My first and only FnC experience in London so I don’t have much to compare it with. I thought it was very good, though maybe a bit on the pricey side. It’s cheaper and quicker if you go to the takeout section through the side door, and there are seats outside for takeout customers. A lot of the reviews of this place are about the décor and atmosphere, but since I only had takeout this review will be strictly for the food. I had the haddock; my fiancée had the cod. Both were excellently prepared and cooked perfectly. I personally wasn’t a huge fan of the chips as I’m more used to crispy french fries, but my fiancée seemed to like them. I also tried the battered sausage… skip that. Stick with fish. Overall this is a really nice place to just stop by for a quick bite while exploring Camden Market… but save some room for the food booths in Camden Lock area

Nice venue with a 50’s vibe, friendly staff keen to seat and attend to your needs, but let down by the food(in my opinion) and the price. It aggrieves me to know that many visitors to our shores will come to this place for an authentic experience. The option of newspaper with your food may be the closest they get. For my £20 plus optional 12.5% service charge I had(sit down) Large Haddock, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea. Haddock, nice enough«batter», but fish overcooked in my opinion, almost to the point of having the same texture as chicken breast. An un-PC as it may sound, not oily enough but obviously«healthier». Chips, uniformly squared edges, harrumph. The cardinal sin when serving fish and chips is NOSCRAPS., the tiny, crispy, bobbles of cooked batter that fall off the fish into the fryer. It was enjoyable, but I left really, really disappointed. I expect I really just wanted to be in Bridlington or Filey on the east Yorkshire cost, but that was not their fault. For the price most people might prefer to go elsewhere. PS — What really brought a smile to my face, being British and of a certain age, what the single Fruit Salad and Black Jack chews with the bill.

I have been craving Fish and chips for a long time!!! I live in the Camden area and always thought that the place lacked a true«British» fish and chip shop. So when I found out about Poppies I couldn’t wait to get in there. The venue looks the part and I like the small attention to detail. Waitresses were very keen to serve, but I couldn’t help but think that this was because they must have had twice the amount required! We were attended to by at least 3 different people, all keen to be doing anything other than standing about looking pretty. The fish and chips can’t really be faulted; the fish was fresh and the batter light. The chips were chunky and not at all soggy. The food was served in a timely manner(as you would expect for fish and chips!). Portions were adequate, but I am used to finding a decent portion of chips a challenge so in truth I would have wanted more on the plate) My main issue with Poppies is the price!!! We ended up with a bill of £30(ish)… For fish and chips!!! My local chippy in Hampshire has me smiling and content for under a £10 so why I need to pay three times the amount for the pleasure of the same meal in Camden I am unsure. Recommend it if you need your FnC fix, but in honesty as is the current fad in London… traditional foods shouldn’t be over priced just because you package the venue a bit nicer.

The live band was the best thing this place had going. Few of the waitresses spoke English well. The fish honestly left my stomach very upset and that is a review I don’t like to leave, especially since it came recommended by the person we were staying with. Fun atmosphere. Vibrant. But I’m just not sure I would return to eat the fish… Chips were tasty to me though.
