I went to Oliver’s after anticipating enjoying some Fish and Chips because I am now very sensitive to gluten. It is a very small restaurant/takeaway and it was very busy so we had a little wait. The staff were friendly but very busy so no time to be attentive although they reassured me I would be in safe hands as it was a Wednesday so they were well prepared to serve gluten free. The food came and the portions weren’t really impressive for the price, I found the food to be tasteless even the chips! The batter was tough not sure if they use any beer in the batter. My son who isn’t gluten free wasn’t impressed with his meal either. And the at the end the bill was more than I would have paid for that meal. Not saying I wouldn’t go there again but not in a hurry.

Very good fish, ok chips, nice eating area. Is quite expensive. More like dining at a medium price restaurant than you average fish & chips place but we still like to go quite often.

Best Fish’n’Chips! We each had a piece of haddock battered & shared a small fries. Our kids had the cod bites with chips and they inhaled it. We also tried the mashed potatoes and fresh peas. Our local friends told us this is the best place in the area and we definitely agree! You won’t be disappointed.(We are Visitors from Vancouver BC Canada)

We made a long trek to Oliver’s since my daughter found it to offer«Gluten Free Fish and Chips» and was adamant about me having some since I had told her I was sad I couldn’t eat Fish and Chips while there. I usually steer clear from Fish(am Vegetarian but will make rare exceptions for fish) but figured that«while in Rome». you know, «Rome» being London and all. We sat down and started perusing the menu. I found so many delicious looking items I was actually quite excited, there sides included so many options for someone who doesn’t eat meat and can’t have gluten. When our server came we asked about the Gluten Free and she said that it was only on Wednesdays. It wasn’t Wednesday, and we were leaving soon. No worries though, that menu proved I wasn’t going to leave disappointed. I did try the Salmon it came with a side salad, and l’il ‘ol me thinking it was going to be a tiny white lettuce boring salad ordered another side of grilled veggies. Let me tell you that the portions were not small and that salad was fresh, colorful and the dressing fantastic. It would have been more than enough food for one person. As I dug in, the food was just delicious, all of it and even though I had more food than I could eat, I still stole my daughter’s mushy peas(she was full and wasn’t going to finish them). It definitely wasn’t on the cheaper side, but for us the meal was worth every penny.

Oliver’s is famed for its healthy fish and chips, with portions cooked in rapeseed oil coming in at 500 calories. I cant say that it is the best fish and chips in London as a lot of people say but it is definitely one of the best out there. It is a bit more pricey than a normal fish and chips shop but the quality of the fish justifies it. I would suggest phoning in and making a reservation for the tables located next to the window before visiting as the rest of the shop is a bit uninspiring.

Popped in this evening for a Sunday fix of fish and chips. The shop is quite small but there was adequate space for us to sit and the place seemed. Busy with a steady footfall of take away orders and people sitting in. Service was very standard nothing more than taking the order and bringing the food. The shop itself is clean and tidy with a kind of traditional feeling about it. we both went for fish and chips, I opted for haddoock while my wife went for cod. We both had a portion of chips and I went for a gerkin, gotta get those greens! My haddock was pretty good and the batter was crispy. The cod however was a little undercooked. The chips were very standard in my opinion, not particularly chunky and with no crunch. They atlesst didn’t taste oily though(as many shops tend to) the fish came with tartar sauce which I thought was a little tasteless. If I was charged what I felt this meal was worth, I’d have left happy and possibly gone back. As the final bill came to £34(we had a soft drink each) I felt a little disheartened. I get the modern take on traditional foods and a nice venue but if your going to charge almost 2 x the price, you really need to be doing a bit more to justify the price.

Friendly staff and quick service, I normally go one tube further to Belsize Park and phone my order in when I come out if the station. A short walk down the hill and it’s ready to pick up before walking home and sitting down to dinner. The fish is FRESH don’t think I’ve had fresher from a fish and chip shop. The chips are good too, there’s no fish sitting around except possibly for their cod bites(a good deal, off cuts of cod fried up and sold with chips at a lower price). I normally go for the plaice though as I grew up eating it. Possibly a bit more than a chippie but I do prefer paying a little more for the quality and service. They sell takeaway in cardboard boxes with a foiled grease proof layer. Better than the wax paper they used to use. I’ve only eaten in once and it was a good experience but a while ago.

Food didn’t really do it for me, but the owners and staff were all so friendly and helpful that I’d go back. I think I’m a bad person to judge British style fish and chips, as I want it to be something it’s not. My guess is if you grew up eating this type of food you’ll think Oliver’s is a mighty fine ‘chippy’. I found the fish to be way to big, which causes a lot of moisture(water) to build up inside the fried batter. This causes it to get soggy quickly. Chips also aren’t my thing in general– give me a good french fry instead. I’m going to return though and try again one day, as it’s near my house and the staff are nice.

I cycle past Oliver’s every day. One day I decided to stop. I had fish and chips(obviously but they do have other options). They have an eat in area and takeaway. They seemed to have more staff than customers in the shop at any one time but there was quite a lot of people coming in and taking away. My fish and chips ordered I was told I had a 7 minute wait(ooh such an exact time, I thought). Turns out I got them in 15 mins — I was starting to get impatient. Anyway, despite taking away they were happy for me to eat them at their little picnic table outside. The fish was good and the temperature of molten lava throughout my meal(I was hungry and couldn’t wait for it to cool after that 25% of an hour wait) and the chips were tasty. They do this ‘serving in a box’ thing which has become increasingly the norm in recent years in the fancier chippies– gone is the newspaper sweaty wrap which is probably a good thing. I do prefer my cod on the thicker side with a less batter to more fish ratio(ideally something like 1:5 or even 2:11) but this was good nonetheless(approximatly 3:13) and if I lived nearby I would be happy for the occasional Friday fried fish from this establishment.

I had my annual fish and chips 8 Feb 14. The fish was fresh, properly fried and nice, as the the people working there. The tartar sauce is lovely.

They have a stand at one of the food markets in Camden. While I walked around the entire place, feeling like it was a United Nations food bazaar, I kept coming back to Oliver’s. Fortunately I was with someone else who was opening to sharing. The fish and chips in the cone were fantastic. I mean, the batter was great, not overly oily, the fish was nice, and the chips perfect. This was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. And it was served in a super convenient cone! How novel. (I don’t even remember what the other meal ordered was because Oliver’s stole the show)

Not changing my rating, but I did go back last night with a small group and the service was a lot better. I tried the matzah meal batter, two of us had the regular batter, and one person ordered the grilled yellowfin tuna steak, rare. We shared the dipping trio, chips, coleslaw, and mushy peas. The matzah meal isnt something I’d order again as it was denser than I’d like but, to be fair, I think it was as good as you could get from matzah meal! I just missed the airiness of the regular batter The tuna, again, was ordered rare and served medium. There was a hint of pink if you looked at it from the right angle. Unfortunately with something like tuna, anything above rare really ruins the quality of the fish and dries it out. The coleslaw, mushy peas, and dipping trip were excellent(the babaganoush was clearly homemade, extra garlicky, and delicious). Chips again were not crispy. I think maybe they single fry them? Overall, very good, but the chips and overcooking of the tuna steak is disappointing.

FIsh and Chips. the mecca of british food. This has been my mantra for years. Here’s the rub… I’m now gluten intolerant and well, Oliver’s was going to be the end-all for me. I ordered up the fish and chips and behold… They either didn’t clean their kitchen thoroughly the night before, or? but my order DID contain gluten. I was sick for the next 24 hrs… distended stomach, aches, indigestion, fatigue… the whole nine yards. Moral of the story– eat only prepared foods that are gluten free naturally. Fish and CHips are NOT meant to be gluten free and neither is cake etc… you get my drift. I now only order grilled fish and NO chips, despite the claims of GF.

Starting in spring 2012, Oliver’s now does GF fish & chips every Wednesday, due to popular response. The batter could be more flavorful(perhaps using a gluten-free beer and some spices) but the texture is nice and crispy, and beggars shouldn’t be choosers, I suppose. Great selection of sides and they offer the lovely Magner’s pear cider.

Really top fish and chips, not cheap but well worth it. For take away you have to wait 8 minutes for most things as outside peak times they only make to order to ensure quality of the food is perfect as it has not sitting around Great to see a really well thought out restaurant with original quality

The ideal local fish and chip shop. I have the cod in matzo meal, and although it’s not something you’ll want to have too often, it’s the perfect place when only fish and chips will do.

Cute little place near my friends house. Small seating space but didn’t have to wait really during the dinner rush. They had run out of these fish cakes that friend and I both wanted, but waiter was nice and tried to persuade me to try something nicer, albeit more expensive, still. And because it’s fancy chip shop you can get grilled fish pieces if you’re feeling guilty for all those delicious chips. A little expensive for the fair but nice every once in a while.

Yum! Such fresh fish and at such a decent price. Cons(starting with these as there aren’t many): Can be crowded and quite warm inside. No heaters for outside tables. Limited wine list(but suitable for the venue). Mushy peas can be bland and the portions are a bit skint. Pros: Friendly service. Fresh fish and great salads. Beer and desserts also very reasonably priced — £1.50 for a deep fried Mars bar takeaway. Everything else is plus. The open kitchen proclaims: «Look at how clean I am. I have nothing to hide!» Always a comfort with a fish & chippie.(With others, you may like the taste but be forced to stick your head in the sand on hygiene to keep going back. Not so with Olivers.)

So glad that my local chippie is not sketch. I don’t really care for the fish but the sides(chips) are pretty good. Although watch out as they tend to slap on the salt and vinegar! It’s a cute set up as well, reminiscent of the dining/kitchen rome of a summer holiday home. Not somewhere I would frequent regularly but a nice stop once and a blue moon
