We had no idea what to expect, other than it was something about Yeomen Warders and the keys to the Tower. What we got was so much more.
Our Warder guide for the night was Andy. My goodness, was he fun to be around. It was clear to me that he took his job seriously, but he also had a very good sense of humor. He kept the rather large group of people — including a couple fidgety kids — engaged for the duration of the introduction, and then again towards the end of the night.
It was a fast «tour», but something I’d highly recommend. I don’t want to give too many details, in case someone out there wants to try it someday, but I will say that it was absolutely worth the time. The ceremony itself goes on even when the public isn’t invited, and it’s spectacular in all its grandeur.
You’ll learn a good bit of history, be entertained with stories, and be witness to something that is steeped in history and tradition. It’s really well done (though, the bugler that night did have a bit — okay, a lot — of trouble finding the right notes. And key. And tune…) and kind of spectacular to witness.

I highly recommend this. You need to get tickets before you come to London well in advance. Limited space but worth the effort. You won’t disappointed.

Holy crap was this cool. NOTE: This is an advanced ticketed event.
Here is how this works: you show up at the Tower of London at 9 at night, que up with 25 or so patrons and witness a ceremony that had gone on uninturuped for over 700 years. That is no typo: 700 years.
They did this during the bombing of London, the great London fire and everything in-​between and since. They do if even if no one is there.
You have to request, in writing, tickets to the ceremony. Depending on where you live, you have to include international postage back to your home. Right now, in the USA, they are providing the postage for you, as the US is no longed selling the international stamp. Check their web site for details.
Be sure to plan well in advance – several months ahead.
The ceremony requires you line up– I think we were let in at 9:25. They check tickets and then you are met by a Yeomen Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace, known at The Beefeaters. He wears a special red coat for this process. He tells you the history of the ceremony and a little about the tower. It is a very informative and entertaining talk.
Then, he goes off and he and other armed and uniformed members of the guard perform the ritual while you watch. The call, «Who goes there?» supposedly comes from this ceremony.
My son was enthralled and really everybody there was in awe. Note: There are absolutely no photos or video permitted.
Be sure to visit the tower beforehand – this visit is not where you do the regular tower tour. That was interesting all on its own, but on its own the Ceremony of the Keys is a special thing.
Let the lemmings line up outside Windsor for the changing of the guard. This is where the action is…

Do not miss this event .The guide was excellent and gave us all sorts of interesting information. The ceremony itself only takes a few minutes but it is amazing how much effort is put into securing a location. My group thought this was the best part of our sight seeing tour

Ein wirkliches Erlebnis, very british. Das nicht so ganz einfache Anmeldeprocedere (man muss wirklich zur Post und die Antwortscheine dort erwerben, im Internet nicht möglich gewesen) wie von Plainpixel weiter unten bestens beschrieben, wird durch ein ganz tolles einzigartiges Erlebnis wettgemacht. Teilnehmen!!!

It was a different experience. Like seeing history to come live. I recommend. Despite being short ceremony, it’s definetely memorable, and FREE: D the best bit about it. Anyways, who else got a chance to see one of the Queens bodyguards from so close :) Also, it kind of makes you appreciate the history better, and understand the story behind the certain actions done by guards in Tower Hill.

Wer’s verpennt ist selber Schuld

Die Ceremony of the Keys (Zeremonie der Schlüssel) ist das traditionelle Abschließen des Tower of London.
Seit mehr als 700 (siebenhundert!!!) Jahren findet diese interessante Zeremonie dort statt– bisher nur ein einziges Mal unterbrochen während eines Luftangriffes im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
Eine Anekdote besagt, das die teilnehmenden Offiziere nach dem Bombenangriff ihre Deckung verließen und den Staub von ihrem Uniformen abschüttelten– und einfach dort weitermachten, wo sie vor dem Angriff aufgehört haben. In einem Schreiben an den damaligen König George VI entschuldigte sich die Wache für die Verspätung bei der Schlüsselübergabe. Der König schrieb, er verzichte auf eine Bestrafung, da es sich hier um einen feindlichen Angriff handelte, Das Schreiben befindet sich noch heute im Tower.
Obwohl kein Monarch mehr dort wohnt, ist diese Zeremonie noch immer wichtig– befinden sich doch noch immerhin die Kronjuwelen und viele andere historische Kunstschätze von unschätzbarem Wert dort!
Die Tickets gibt es übrigens kostenlos. Man sollte jedoch, auf Grund der immensen Nachfrage früh genug (am Besten mindestens zwei Monate vor dem geplanten Besuch!) dort hin schreiben, um seine Tickets zu bestellen.

— Vor– und Nachnamen der teilnehmenden Personen
— Zwei Termine zu Auswahl
— Ein an sich selbst adressierter Rückumschlag
— Internationale Antwortscheine im gegenwert des Portos

Vom 1. April bis einschließlich 31. Oktober ist die Anzahl auf
sechs Personen /​Gruppe beschränkt. Vom 1. November bis einschließlich 31. März maximal 15 Personen /​Gruppe.

Weiterhin ist folgendes zu beachten:
— Das fotografieren ist nicht gestattet

Am Abend des Termins sollte man sich absolut pünktlich (jaja, die Engländer!) bis 21.30 Uhr mit den Tickets vor dem Tor einfinden. Später ankommende Nachzügler können wegen der Einzigartigkeit dieses Ereignisses nicht mehr eingelassen werden!
Aus Sicherheitsgründen findet am Eingang ein Sicherheitscheck statt– schliesslich befindet man sich auf königlichem Boden!
Die Ceremony of the Keys endet um 22:05; anschließend wird man von den Wachen (!) wieder zum Ausgang des Towers geleitet.
Bisher habe ich zweimal an dieser einzigartigen Zeremonie teilgenommen und jedesmal war ich begeistert. Ich hier nicht verraten, was dort geschieht– man muss es selbst erlebt haben!
In diesem Jahr mach ich zum dritten Mal mit– und mit Sicherheit nicht zum letzten Male!
