This restaurant in the Gore Hotel has an impressive history and reputation, and I have often eaten here after concerts at the nearby Albert Hall. How times change. What was a very attractive room now seems austere, and the service is brusque, and almost comically inadequate. The choices were limited, and many dishes were unavailable. When the food did arrive eventually it was ordinary, and my companion’s meal was burnt. Our complaints were justified by saying that there was a new chef. To add insult to injury at the end of a frustrating and chaotic dining experience we were presented with the wrong bill. Avoid at all costs.

In the front door and to the right is Bistro One Ninety Queen’s Gate and to the left is Bar 190. I’ve heard from a colleague that Bar 190 was good, but we turned right a few weeks ago to try the pre-theatre meal. The food was very good and even a bit interesting and, significantly, the service was prompt and attentive. Made it to the West End in time, even by tube. The bill was £21.50 for two courses or £23.50 for three courses, and I viewed it as good value. Check the bill of fare at the street and expect the meal to be good to very good. Not a destination restaurant, but if you are attending a performance at the Royal Albert Hall and want dinner beforehand, this is the best place I know so far.
