When I first moved to the UK, I must admit I was disappointed with all the prepackaged sandwiches at every takeaway. When my coworkers brought me to Birley’s, I was thrilled to find a made to order sandwich shop where I could pick and choose my sandwich fillings on fresh brown or white bread. A Birley’s sandwich might run you a couple £‘s more than other shops, but you really pay for what you get here. This location has a small seating area inside, which is usually busy so I never eat in here. As another reviewer noted, the ordering system could use some streamlining. It basically ends up being a free for all during the weekday lunch rush. My advice, use this to your advantage and place your order quickly rather than stand in the back of the crowd!

It’s a sandwich Jim, but not as you know it. Truly exquisite mixes of green stuff, cheesy stuff and cooked slices of stuff cut off dead animals betwixt the most wonderful breads with and without sauces with and without toasting. I really like this place. If sandwiches were made by Fiat, Birleys would be made by Ferrari.

Between 11.45am and 2pm this place gets bussssyyyy and rightly so, as the food is lush and the service efficient. What loses points for this place is the bum’s rush of city workers all clamouring for their carb fix and queueing in an odd, and confusing way. I come into work to take me away from the chaos of the outside world. Lunctimes here often bring it all home. Trust me, there’s no rhyme or reason to how people line up. Food is ordered from the counter. Upon ordering you’re given your ticket and pay for what you’ve bought but are still waiting for. It can become very confusing, waiting on the sidelines for food while other people moonwalk past you with their lunchtime treats. The snacks, to be fair, are delicious if a little pricey so generally worth the wait. Again you get what you pay for. you’re a stone’s throw from the Bank of England, so their rent is high, which i guess is reflected in the price of the food you pay for. The best advert for this place is that the staff whom take your order do NOT also handle your money, which happens everywhere else. Birley takes a pride in its appearance and therefore you purchase in confidence. Part of the reason why this place is rammed daily. Oh yeah, try their takeaway salads, they’re carb-tastic.
