We found this gem when we went on vacation to Scotland in September. it looks like a bar from outside but inside its so inviting and warm. The service was excellent the food amazing better than bar food but with good price. It was so good we took our family who live near, all 9 of us and had a great time. Thanks

We were in Linlithgow to see the palace and as we wandered the high street looking for somewhere to eat the rain came in and we dived in to the nearest place — thus The Four Mary’s. What a fortunate detour! A pleasant wee pub with the usual grub you’d expect. After browsing the menu I settled on the fish finger sandwich and the husband went for the smoked salmon one(with chips). I was expecting maybe good quality breadcrumbed sticks of fish, but what I got were three small and succulent chunks of white fish in a fresh and crispy batter, nestled within a well constructed sandwich — I was very impressed and only £4.99!(Husband said the smoked salmon was good — at least his full mouthed mumbles sounded approving!). Only one teeny tiny grumble — the sandwich and the accompanying dressed salad were served on top of a napkin on the plate, so my salad and dressing were slowly disintegrating in to it. Maybe a slight oversight? Not enough to put me off stumbling in again if I’m in the area

The Four Marys is a nice pub in Linlithgow. I stopped in after a long day of sightseeing for a pint. I took a seat at the front of the pub, facing the window and the street. The place was teeming with activity and lots of locals that were hanging out. I did have to wait several minutes before being served. The person who served me was friendly though and brought me an ale that I enjoyed. The décor of Four Mary’s is nice, and their menu actually looks pretty appealing –despite the fact that I didn’t eat there. Overall, I wish I didn’t have to wait so long for a pint. However, the pub looks great and there looks to be some good food at this pub. I think if I were back in Linlithgow, I would probably go elsewhere first, but this is a nice place worth going to if you’re in town.

I quite enjoyed this wee pub in Linlithgow! My boyfriend and I spent a good chunk Valntines Day wandering about Linlithgow Palace and the surrounding Loch for a nice relaxing day outside of the city when we happened upon this wee pub. Ok, so we hadn’t happened upon it, I used Unilocal to see what pubs we might be able to have a drink in, and this one seemed like a winner! Zing! Of course, I hadn’t worn the best shoes to do a lot of walking in(I was going for casual chic with my Betsy Johnson flats and skinny jeans) so I was happy as anything to finally take a load off and enjoy a bevvy with my love. Walking in to this place, immediately you want to kick your shoes off(not just because of tired feet) but because the carpet underneath your feet felt lush and cozy. I think at one point, as gross as this sounds, I took one of my shoes off just to feel the lush carpet– oh it was nice!!! Aside from that, there was a roaring fire that greeted us as we walked in and loads of boards about with written specials. We ordered at the bar and found a table and took a seat. It seemed like an older crowd with a few younger couples sprinkled about– it really seemed like a good mix. We felt really comfortable here and would have stayed a bit longer had it not been Valentines Day(and our anniversary) and wanting to get back to Glasgow for other plans that night. The staff at the bar were friendly as anything and they had a nice selection of crisps, which we bought one of: Chorizo crisps. Mmmmm! Never seen that flavour in my life, but they were pretty tasty! All in all, I’m glad we decided to stay a bit longer in Linlithgow and visit Four Marys. If you find yourself in town, do stop by and check it out. It really is a great wee pub!

Really enjoyed this place. Real ales were good. Cullen skink was very good as well. Atmosphere was nice — easy to carry on a conversation without having all the other patrons overhear. The bartender was very kind in allowing me to sample several real ales before I decided on the one I liked. The wait staff was quick and brought our food quickly. Can’t wait to go back!

A definite must stop after visiting Linlithgow Castle, especially on a cold day! The main dining room has a roaring fireplace and is warm and cozy. Our food was tasty but not exceptional but the atmosphere was enough to make us happy!

This is a cosy and attractive traditional pub with stone walls, two fire places, many real ales on tap and a good menu of pub favourites. It gets a lot of visitors because it’s one of the nicer pubs in Linlithgow which, despite its historical importance, nice architecture, tea rooms and almost-genteel feel in parts, can also, as one review says, be a bit«rough and ready» for non-locals. However it attracts plenty of locals as well as tourists, so it’s a real pub rather than a tourist trap. It’s also bigger than it looks, with a large dining room leading off from the main pub area. It’s advisable to book ahead on weekends as it gets pretty busy. Service can get rather slow at these times, but that’s to be expected. And the staff could be ever-so-slightly friendlier. But the quality of the food is at the upper end of pub cooking, with reasonable prices(averaging around £8 for a main) and good portion sizes. I uploaded a pic of my battered haddock. So overall, a reliable option whenever you’re in Linlithgow checking out the history of Mary Queen of Scots: good food, good beer in cosy traditional surroundings. They also have a beer festival in May which could be worth a shot.

The Four Marys is a well known pub. Its won several awards including the Sunday Mail’s pub of the year. It’s definitely a pub that attracts the tourists, especially given its location just down from the Palace, but when its not too overcrowded its a good place to have a few drinks or a pub meal. The pub is named after the four ladies in waiting of Mary Queen of Scots, also all called Mary. The pub really plays this up and you’ll find the place decorated in Mary Queen of Scots paraphernalia. Beyond that the interior is large, but still cosy, and has a more traditional feel. They have a good selection of beers which they seem to pride themselves on. They also serve fairly standard pub food. It’s decent if not a little highly priced. I have to agree with Paul though that the food took its time arriving. All in all I got the impression that the owners really cared about the place. It was all very professional, clean and friendly. It also seemed to attract a fair few number of local as as well as tourists, which is always a good sign.

If it didn’t have the significant amount of neds bubbling under the surface, I’d actually quite like to live in Linlithgow. Parts have a proper old fashioned village feel yet it’s big enough to have it’s share of amenities. Those that it doesn’t are only a few miles away in the urban jungle of Falkirk, or a bit further in the actual urban jungle of Edinburgh. The Four Mary’s is it’s most famous pub and has been playing on the town’s association with the headless monarch for decades. It’s got a famous resident ghost and due to my love of Ghostbusters when I was a young scamp it was a place I often insisted my parents took me for an orange juice and bite to eat. It attracts an older crowd with plenty of tourists and has a lively yet genteel buzz, unlike the other pubs on main street which can get a bit rough and ready come the weekend.

Beautifully preserved pub slap bang in the middle of Linlithgow High Street, the Four Marys is second only to the majestic Palace in terms of locations to take tourists in the town. The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, with a traditional village pub-feel exuded. You can also expect extremely friendly service, a wide range of real ales and hearty pub meals. My only complaint stems from the length of time you must wait for food. On both occasions I have been recently, I have waited over half an hour for simple dishes.

This wee pub on Linlithgow high street is a great place to enjoy a quiet pint of proper ale. There is always a good selection of beer available although a lack of seats in the actual bar area. The restaurant are is lovely and cosy with a great menu. The food is very tasty and good value for money. It’s often very busy at the weekend so booking a table is probably the best idea. The food is proper Scottish cuisine and I recommend the cullen skink, tis delicious. Lovely place to eat out in Linlithgow!
