The Black Bitch is the inappropriately named tavern with food that had a hard but burnt texture to it that most people would find unappealing.

Great little pub with a nice mix of locals and tourists. We felt right at home and the bartender knew what I wanted before I did. I would go back for a pint or glass of wine anytime.

Nice local pub atmosphere, we wandered in looking confused and were immediately welcomed and made to feel at home.

The oldest pub in Linlithgow, this tavern actually derives its name from the town coat of arms. The pub is a traditional, local pub, but very welcoming. They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves ‘Black Bitches’ after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

Despite an incredibly un-PC name, The Black Bitch in Linlithgow is quite surprisingly not filled with wall to wall Ku Klux Clan members and Daily Mail readers. Instead it’s an old-fashioned, traditonal pub in an Edinburgh dormitory town filled to bursting with old fashioned, traditional pubs. Apart from the bizarre cross-burning moniker, there’s not too much to get excited about. A few years back my cronies and I would come out in Linlithgow quite a bit as we begun to look for a more serene nightlife experience. The Bitch wasn’t always on our radar, but on the occasions we did come in it was perfectly adequate.

After spending a little time in Linlithgow, you soon become aware that laughing at the title«Black Bitch» becomes a little tiresome to locals. The name is given to those who are born in the town and most are incredibly proud of it. So laugh while you read this review, but when you visit its subject, simply sit back and enjoy it for what it is — a cracking, traditional town pub. You won’t find sport on TV here, but rather a soundtrack of chatting from locals or the music of local folk musicians. Most visitors I’ve taken to the town have loved this place, and find it incredibly welcoming and homely.

Good traditional local pub for a few drinks, usually with a guest beer. Occasional live music, particularly during the folk festival, and the upstairs room can be booked by clubs or for functions.
