From the outside you’d be forgiven for thinking that this place would be racked with history and full of charm. Sadly — not quite. If you’re looking for something more along those lines — I’d pop along the road to The Kings Head. What you’ll find at Ye Shakespeare is a bit of an old’s man pub, quiet conversation and a stilted atmosphere. But the prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. Great if you want a peaceful pint with no interruptions.

I used to always walk past this pub every time I was walking to the station and it intrigued me. The old Tudor looking building was inviting as I always imagined it would transport me back to the time of Henry the 8th. I was a little bit wrong as it’s not all that great inside! Although the outside theme is continued inside which is nice, its more the company which was the downfall. Its too far out from the centre to attract the majority of drinkers so it’s mainly full of local old men. Apart from that, it’s a perfectly good little pub with a good atmosphere. Just don’t expect any riveting conversations at the bar.

Seeing as its in a timbered Tudor building you’d expect this place to have a bit of an individual character. This has been obliterated by the corporate ownership a bit, but there’s still plenty of wood panelling and old paintings. The building is interesting, and their can’t be many pubs that are much older. Not sure if its got too much to do with Shakespeare himself though, I can think of two other pubs of the same name in Bristol I can’t vouch for the food, but someone else’s meal looked pretty good. The real selection is fairly good, in keeping with the traditional pub feel. On a sunny day you can sit outside, though you’re own a main road, so this wouldn’t be to my taste. You can tell the Shakespeare’s owned by a chain, but it still manages to retain some if its character.

For some reason I can’t quite remember, I’ve always regarded this place as being rubbish, though I’m not sure I’ve ever actually been inside. This was until I was drawn in for a pint before eating at the restaurant next door on Friday night. As you could probably guess from the exterior/name, this is a traditional pub with ales to the fore(early evenings in the week are cheap when you can get two pints for a fiver). The location, however, means it attracts a clientele of office workers as opposed to strange CAMRA beards, who all spill out onto the street out front. The interior is very pleasant with a low ceiling and wooden fittings which guarantee a pleasant atmosphere. One of the more attractive traditional pubs in this area.

I am surprised that there are not already reviews on Qype for this pub. Ye Shakespeare is a really old tudor pub on Victoria Street on the way to Temple Meads. The Shakespeare has two bars there is a good jukebox and they often have drinks offers. They serve good cheap pub food at lunch time e.g. sandwiches, burgers and cheesy chips. The staff are friendly and the food usually arrives quickly. This pub is usually busy especially in Summertime and gets packed on Friday nights with office workers near by having after-work drinks. It has a nice atmosphere but can be claustrophobic and difficult to get to the bar when it gets busy as its not too big.

The only reason I come here is the quiz night(every tuesday). Not that I’ve ever won it, infact it’s notoriously difficult. However during the quiz they give away free sandwiches. What more could you possibly want.(Well a few things actually). This is very much a traditional pub situated in the centre of Bristol it’s deceptively large. They serve 3 real ales and pretty much standard booze there after(lager, spirits etc). I’ve never encountered the juke box what with only going on quiz nights(it’s very anti-social to start playing firestarter mid-question), but I hear it’s good. They also have a fruit machine and quiz machine if memory serves. The staff are ok but there are a couple of bad apples. It’s not a great pub by any means but, the central location and free sandwiches make it worth a visit. 3 stars
