I love St Nicks food market. It is by far the best place to go for lunch in Bristol. It’s not very often I fancy curry for lunch, but I did today so I went to Spice up your Life — and it was absolutely delicious! The meal deals area little confusing, but I’ll forgive them for that. At the front of the counter are 6 – 8 different meat curry dishes that change daily. 3 – 4 vegetable dishes and a couple of rice options. I LOVE peas in a curry. Like, absolute love it! So when I saw mince keema lamb with peas in it, it went straight for it! I had that with another lamb curry dish, I think it was bhuna, with pilau rice. For somewhere that doesn’t look that great, the food was absolutely beautiful So so tasty with a really nice heat. Not a tongue or lip stinger — just a nice mild heat that lasted with the taste of the food! This isn’t the cheapest place to eat in St Nicks, but £6.90 for two really good curry dishes, rice and a poppadom with pickles — it’s an absolute bargain! I love St Nicks — I love Spice up your Life!

Wow! Not the cheapest place to eat in St Nicks, in fact probably the most expensive if you are talking about having lunch here every day, but that is irrelevant. I really love it here; I actually think this might be the best Indian food in Bristol. This family run business clearly knows their way around a curry oven(?). The choice alone is fantastic and as it’s all laid out in front of you waiting for you to make your choice it is even harder to pick one. The sheer range they have every day is incredible, today they had the lamb, chicken, veggie or vegan option but within each of these categories they had a variety of different curries. I think it was the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my whole life. Being early in the afternoon I had to go for one of the milder options, which I would normally absolutely hate to do, but it was still amazing. It was bursting with flavour and a very mild touch of spice, which I was told by the chef/owner, came from the Dhana Dal. For £6.50 you get a curry, the perfect sized portion of rice and a poppadom, with all the sauces already out on the table for you(chutney etc.). After I had eaten my meal I actually thought it was great value for money. I would have curry three times a day if I could and I think this was the best lunch I have ever had.

A meal from here does not taste like restaurant food, it tastes like proper wholesome home cooked Indian food. I don’t know whether they use less oil or what but it tastes like you are having a super healthy lunch. The portions are quite large, I was groaning when I finished. Its also incredible value! For the same price as a boring pre-packaged sandwich and a packet of crisps you could get a lovely dish here with rice, dhal and a poppodom. Its a shame that the seating area is not more atmospheric, it does feel a bit ‘café’ like and as the location inside the market is so lovely, it could be more spectacular. However I’m quite happy not having an extra couple of quid on my bill in exchange for more ambience. What you get here is great quality food, decent size portions at an excellent price.

I am such a major fan of this little eatery, I have been known to clear my plans just for a little bit of me time chowing down here. It is situated on the edge of the wonderful St Nicholas Market, and while the seating isn’t plush, it is a breath of fresh air just to spend some time here. The staff are extremely friendly and they change up their menu daily. You can get really generous portions for hardly any money and can eat on a little plastic table on the cobbles or inside reading the papers. They do a great meal deal which is a meat dish with rice and a poppadom for around a fiver but my favourite is usually the veggie meal deal where you can get a dish, a dahl, some rice and a poppadom for less than four pounds. And the food tastes fresh and clean, without all the usual additives many Indian take-aways hurl at their food. They also do great lassis and bhajjis. Long may they reign as the culinary kings of this incredible market!

St Nicks market has quite a few little food stalls for all tastes but this place is highly recommended — asian and indian food which is in perfect portion sizes for lunch. The stallholders can handle the chaos of the lunchtime rush with aplomb — and there is a rush even in the week as the office workers get out at 1pm so head here early or late so you can grab a table just outside in the street. You should be able to find space for 4 – 6 of you but you can also take it to the nearby Castle Park if you want some downtime alone with some good food.
