The Coach and Horses is a lovely pub that can be described most succinctly with the word ‘unpretentious’. Whilst the rest of Clifton becomes slowly more and more gentrified, The Coach and Horses retains an English pub charm with none of that fancy continental lager rubbish. It is the perfect place to go to on a Sunday for a calm and relaxed pint and newspaper read. Pub quizzes are great fun midweek and draw crowds of all sorts. I would heartily recommend The Coach and Horses, if you can find it hidden behind Whiteladies road!

The Coach and Horses is in many ways your standard English pup, and unlike many pubs in Bristol isn’t particularly popular with students — perhaps because of the lack of offers here. It is a very standard pub — providing an average place to sit and have a drink with friends, but it’s probably the company more than the place itself that makes your time there good! Although in my opinion nothing special, this pub does boast a good beer garden — so in the summer its probably more attractive because of this fact. Every Tuesday night they try to put on a weekly pub quiz, which I haven’t been to before because on my only visit there weren’t enough people to play — this was pretty disappointing. On a more positive note they do have a good range of board games stocked in the corner which you can help yourself to — a great idea as a form of chilled out entertainment for groups! I don’t think I’d recommend this to anyone, however there is nothing wrong with the place and it serves a purpose for locals — but perhaps don’t go out of your way to go here!

It is hard to know exactly how the pub gets any customers because of its location. However once you have found it you will become a big fan. Last year they sponsored my housemates football team so after their games I would sometimes join them for a pint in the pub. The team working behind the bar are really nice, and know how to pull a mean pint, especially Guinness where they draw a clover in the head. The food is not recommended, everything else however certainly is!

The trendy bars of Whiteladies can be a bit underwhelming at times(not least because they’re not all that trendy) and the Coach and Horses is a welcome contrast to them. It doesn’t try to be anything in particular and because of that is more or less your average traditional pub. Don’t let the grand building in which it’s housed in lead you to think this place is particularly posh — whilst is in Clifton everything here is plenty down to earth. There’s sports shown sometimes but it’s certainly not a sports put, too sedate and localish for that. The staff are friendly enough without being too obsequious. The lack of any strong character means you get a nice mix of students and locals that rub along together well. Range and price are all right, with the usual pub grub on offer. Well placed for a post stroll round the downs pint.

We squeezed in here just before they rang time after a Christmas meal. They were welcoming, even at that late hour, and despite serving a rather warm glass of orange juice(how does OJ even get warm in December?) It’s small inside and the locals are very local — in that they look as though they would fight for their pub if they needed to(wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing I suppose). It is unremarkable and so like every other pub, but atleast it isn’t a soulless trendy wine bar(as so many place on nearby Whiteladies road seem to be). The front garden is packed with tables and all very well if you’re a smoker or it’s summer(or both). The beer and larger, including locally brewed Cheddar Gorge Best — a fave with my ale drinking buddies.

In an area packed with bars, the Coach and Horses is a pleasant, more traditional pub hiding around the back of Bohemia/Babushka/The King’s Arms/Whatever it’s called these days. The inside is pretty unremarkable, though there’s a TV which screens sport(I’m not sure if they have Sky), a pool table, a jukebox and some pretty reasonably priced lagers and ales. The main attraction is the fairly large garden out the front, which has plenty of seating and, being away from a main road, is a relaxing place to enjoy a few beers in the sun.

This is a nice pub, hidden away behind Whiteladies road. Its prices are all reasonable, and it has some limited outside seating. The interior is quite dated, but it has a pool table and an ItBox. The bar staff have always been friendly, and I like to go here from time to time.

Definitely one of the best pubs in Bristol but not one that many people actually know about. They generally run a pub quiz on a Tuesday but check in before hand as they don’t always have enough people to play. They also have board games– including trivial pursuit– in the corner for everyone to play. There is a large beer garden with picnic tables and lots of atmosphere. This pub is the sister pub of the Port of Call round the corner– both are quite local and may be described as ‘old men’ pubs due to the lack of students.

The Coach and Horses is located on a small square, down a side street off Blackboy Hill. It is a lovely place, especially in the summer, where you can drink, eat and smoke(if that is your wont) on the nicely-sized front balcony. You could sit there for hours, in fact, with no-one to bother you but the person next to you. It even sometimes feels like you’re not in Clifton, which, for many who go to Clifton, is probably for the best…

This pub used to be a favourite haunt when i lived in Clifton. Now that ive thankfully left the area, i still find myself sometimes returning to the pub. Located on the corner of the downs and the top of whiteladies road this warm, inviting pub exemplifies all ‘off the beaten track’ gems to be found in Bristol. Overshadowed by the furore and tacky averageness of ‘Babushka’ or whatever the owner has now called this grievous student-swapmed hell hole, the coach and horses has stood the test of time in Bristol, serving good food and quality ales. Look no further.
