The Blackboy Inn is a very good place to go for a relaxing and fulfilling evening. The staff are very attentive and the food is very attractive in looks and taste. I would recommend going and enjoying the atmosphere

The Blackboy Inn on Whiteladies road(which might be Blackboy Hill by now), is a traditional pub with a traditional ale drinking clientel. There are often quite a few students in here too, but goodness knows why when there are far nicer bars in the surrounding area. The pub has a slightly un-PC name, but it is a historical name, the Hill being named after the Black Boy that stood on the Hill in the 19th Century. Rumour has it, he followed a White Lady, and this is where the road gets it’s name. Anyhow, history lesson aside, this place is stuck in a bit of a time warp and in much need of a little update.

This small pub on Blackboy Hill(hence the name) is traditional and warm. There’s not much space in here, but it doesn’t seem unpleasantly crammed when it’s busy, but rather cosy. There’s a few chunky tables with comfy leather seats, and some bar stools around the bar. It feels really welcoming — the staff are always friendly and will have a chat to you. They’re big on sports in here, so there’s two screens on opposing walls on which they show all the main sports fixtures, but they’re particularly focused on rugby. It’s popular with the students, locals, and especially on match days the local Bristol Rugby fans.

I used to live right next door to this place, but I still used to go only in an emergency. Basically, it’s an old man’s pub which makes it a bit of an anomaly in swanky Clifton(even the Jersey Lily up the road looks classy in comparison). Now, I’ve got nothing against old men’s pubs(in fact, I quite like them), but the Blackboy Inn is rundown and ugly with very little to recommend it. The only plus is that one of the two bars has a TV with Sky and you can walk in at half-time during the biggest football match and still get a seat, which tells you all you need to know about the unpopularity of this unremarkable pub.
