I have always been a fan of independent establishments and one of the best type of indie shop is an off licence. Whilst they will stock the obligatory frosty Jack and cans of Stella, they always have an interesting range of random bottles. Trafalgar wines is no exception and they stock Fallen Angel ales and mead(probably my favourite brewery in Sussex), as well as a number of unusual spirits including cachaça(the base ingredient for making caipirinha’s). I have also managed to pick up hemp seed vodka, which whilst more of a novelty than anything else, is still a good drink to turn up with at a party. They also have a lot of cheap deals and offers in the store and you will always find something reduced if you are low on funds. I would agree with Finn in advising any ale lover to make this a priority port of call, there selection is very impressive and they are keen supporters of the many local brewery’s in the Sussex area. A nice shop where you are very likely to come out with something completely different than you were intending to buy, but that is by no means a bad thing in this instance.

There’s nothing more disappointing to the ale lover than walking into an off-license and finding nothing more than a couple of luke-warm Newcy Browns on offer. While the late-night lager vendors of this town have their place, its great when somewhere like this challenges expectations with a wall heaving with bottles of all labels and colours: a shrine of ale, if you will. Sussex boasts some of the leading breweries in the country with countless micro-gems, and this offie offers a taste of them all. From Brighton-born Dark Star’s more esoteric brews, such as the majestically dark expresso stout, to fine, golden ales by Horsham’s Hepworths, and some of most refreshingly hoppy IPAs going, Trafalgar Wines will leave you feeling sad you can’t by them all. As for plonk, there’s plenty of that too.

This is an amazing off licence, very near Brighton station. . It’s a small friendly little shop which almost has a bookshop type feel, with rows of all kinds of booze stacked high along the walls. They seem to specialise in hunting down unusual drinks — if you want a bottle of black absinthe or Belgain fruit beer then this is the place to come. They also seem to specialise in stocking items that are close to their sell by date for reduced prices, so also the place to pick up a bargain.
