Truly the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had with excellent attention to detail and beautiful presentation. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere to take your friends especially as you know they will love your choice. I had nut roast made with pine nuts so no expense spared there !!! My friend had Pork with all the trimmings and lots of crackling. Great new owners, very friendly, big hearted with a great sense of humour and proud to serve. I told them it was worthy of the effort to find a place to make a really great review as it really is the best roast I’ve ever had in Brighton for just over £10. Im telling all my friends. Thank you for making us feel so welcome, we will be back.

The pub was taken over a week ago and the staff now are amazing. Really friendly, and they are right in saying that the terrace has one of the best views over Brighton. Well worth a drink on a nice afternoon

Oh the Setting Sun… A dear old friend of mine, handily located at the end of my road, like a comforting old relative you know you can plod down to see in times of need, or just for the hell of it. It really does have the best view around, hence the name, bit cold in the beer garden at the moment, but if you need a nicotine fix still very pleasant and delightful in the summer albeit busy! Inside is very cosy, I have a thing about lighting and this is perfectly lit with a mix of fairy light and candle light — oooh my favourite! The staff are lovely and have seen me in many different states, shapes and forms and haven’t been rude to me yet so they must have pretty good patience… They offer quite a good drinks selection — not the cheapest, but they’re always changing their wines which are usually very decent, I’d like them to get some Malbec in though, they never seem to have that… But it makes me try different things! The food in there is hearty and delicious. VERY good pub grub, extremely filling and has that home cooked taste and feel. I love the southern fried chicken burger and the veggie fish and chips(halloumi) it’s served with chilli jam — BOOM! They usually have steak nights and such where the chosen food will be considerably cheaper on this night, everybody loves a bargain! Unless you’re a flashy ‘see you next Tuesday’… Great for kids and dogs Without it becoming a crèche or Crufts. Definitely a home from home.

I found out about The Setting Sun from the Google Maps app on my phone, but I wasn’t expecting it to be in a mostly residential neighborhood, high on a hill. What a hike! However, the reward at the top of the hill is worth the climb. I unfortunately was not here during the sunset, but I imagine their terrace has a spectacular view of it. Even during the day, the view over Brighton is pretty fantastic. I wish there was a place like this in the states with a terrace, garden, and great view. The staff was friendly and the menu looks pretty good, too, even though I just came for drinks. Just be careful bounding down the hill with a belly full of beer!

A wonderful pub, situated on top of a(very steep) hill with a stunning view of the fair city Brighton & Hove. This is the ideal place to take friends new to Brighton for a few beers of an evening. The beer and ale selection is good and apparently the wines are good value too. Food is available and reasonably priced. However, it is the view that makes the Sun what it is. My advice is to get there early, as unfortunately the garden will not fit more than 15 at a push… but if you get there in time you can bask for hours watching the city view change with the angle of the sun. Be warned, I do not jest about the gradient of the hill — it may be better to combine an evening at the Sun with an afternoon in Queen’s Park to make life a bit easier. Downhill is much easier after a few drinks anyway.

I came to this pub a week or two ago and was shocked to discover that such an impressive place could exist so far away from the more populated Lanes area. I say more populated, but when you step inside The Setting Sun, you do get the impression that every one of the locals has descended at once. That aludes to the first(of very few) problems with The Setting Sun, that is the size. The tables and chairs run round the outside of the room, offering something like 20 seats at best. If you do find a seat however, you will get to enjoy a warm and vibrant atmosphere that is complemented by a modern British food menu that is impressive although over priced.

Most pubs bear little connection with their name but with The Setting Sun the clue is most definitely in the title. Prime time at this Hannover bar is early evening, as after-workers flock to the terrace for surely the best view in Brighton. Perched aloft the peaks of Hannover, anyone who can muster the lung-power to scale Sussex Street will be well treated to panoramic views of Brighton’s rolling urban sprawl — from the pier, over to the Seven Dials and beyond. Hearty plates of gastro-grub sweeten the deal, and the wine list has enough variety to keep non-beer drinkers happy. On the taps it’s a little lager-centric, though there’s usually one or two decent ales, such as Doombar and Timothy Taylor.

We used to drink here quite a bit when we lived in Kemp town and it really is an amazing pub. Its a fair old hike up the road but worth every step and you don’t feel as guilty sitting and drinking all day after a bit of a yomp! The pub’s interior is pretty low key and understated which is nice but the outdoor decking is really what people walk up the hill for. The view over to the seafront id amazing and if you have friends that have never visited Brighton before, I highly reccomend bringing them here. The staff are also extremely friendly and helpful and the food isn’t bad either. The ber serves a good range of real ales and lagers so you’ll be rolling back down the hill afterwards.

Worth getting here early on a sunny weekend, as the garden gets the sun for all of the afternoon, and its worth it for the views of Brighton. I’ve gradually worked my way through the menu, and have never been disappointed, the fish and chips are great as you usually get two pieces of fish! Worth walking up the monster of a hill to reach it.

I have drank in this pub for over 26 years through it’s many guises. It has changed dramatically over the last 8 or so years(since it became the setting sun). It does have a wonderful view over brighton from the back garden and the food is fine but it has now turned into yet another faceless rather boring pub with little atmosphere. Fine for a quick beer, particulary if you want a bite to eat but lively and fun it is not.

The altitude must have gone to the heads of the proprietors at the Setting Sun, perched on the corner of Windmill Street and Sussex Street in Hanover. The pub is promoting a Valentine’s Supper at £19.95 per person. ‘Reservations advised’ says the flyer, so I guess there’s one born every minute. I’m not saying the food is bad it’s fine. This menu promises Warm Goats Cheese Salad, Poached Fillet of Salmon, Beef Wellington, and Roasted Butternut Squash Mille Fuelle. But, these days, for twenty quid I want an ambience somewhat upscale of a local boozer. It’s a very good local boozer nice beers, lively atmosphere, and friendly staff — but a local boozer is what it is. I blame Gordon Ramsay(always a good idea) for convincing all pub owners they are sitting on potential Michelin star material.

Does what it says on the tin… Set high on a hill, great view from the patio area to watch the setting sun! Food pretty good although a tad pricey, saying that you can’t always get a table as popular haunt. Good selection of drinks from a tiny bar and very reasonable wine prices.

This place certainly deserves its raft of five-star reviews. Categorically speaking, there is nowhere else in Brighton with such a fantastic view of the sunset. Locate on the brow of Windmill Street, directly up-hill from the Ocean Rooms, it’s the perfect place for an evening pint in the summer. If you’ve lived in Brighton for any amount of time and not visited there’s no excuse for such neglect. Everyone should know about this place and store in their reserve pub memory for that summer’s day when they fancy watching the sun go down with a cool pint of cider. It’s one of my favourite places for sure. Although I’ve never eaten there, the food is supposed to be perfectly satisfactory. Also, on Tuesdays there’s a pub quiz and on Thursdays it’s 50s nostalgia night featuring a live DJ.

This is a lovely, unusual pub which is certainly worth the trek out of town for. The pub itself is light and airy, with a good sized wood interior with nice wooden floors, and a conservatory area. Outside though, is where this place really comes alive. The big decked garden offers awesome views from its hillside postion over the city — over rooves and piers. Even without the views, this would be a good local pub with nice staff and quality food, but the location makes it really something special.

The Setting Sun is a charming little pub perched right on top of a hill on the border of Hanover and Kemp Town. The inside is pleasant and the staff are incredibly friendly but the pub’s real pulling power is it’s garden, which has sweeping views of Brighton and the coast looking out across Brighton beach and Hove towards Shoreham-by-Sea. It’s a really enchanting place to sit on a summer’s evening and offers a rare panoramic perspective of our fair city! If you’re lucky enough to be blessed with a good sunset, it just feels magical. And even when the sun goes down, the garden is still a really cosy space to sit and drink with friends. Just inside from the garden there’s a lovely seating area for chillier days– the room lets in lots of light and there are a few big plants dotted around, meaning you don’t feel to far from the outdoors! If you get the right table you can still appreciate the views too! All in all this is a really friendly pub and if you can struggle your way up the hill, you won’t be disappointed. They have a good wine list and all the usual beers and ciders on tap.

If you ever want to combine a late evening drink with an uphill walk then this is the place to go… OK, perhaps not everyone’s ideal but the sunset views from the balcony are fantastic way to appreciate Brighton’s beauty. If you miss this breathtaking phenomena or the predictable sod’s law weather stands in your way, the pub has a cosy wooden interior with a tasteful scattering of fairy lights and is a very pleasant place to enjoy a night time beverage. They do tasty food too!
