As other reviewers have noted, this place sits atop one of the steepest hills in Brighton. I used to live even further up the hill, but the legs aren’t what they were so it’s a good thing I can now approach it from the opposite direction from Queens Park Road. The pub is light, spacious and airy. The décor is a bit ‘World of Interiors’ a gargoyle and a Rapa Nui moai on the mantelpiece, leather sofas, wood carvings. Never mind that, you cry, what’s the beer like? Spitfire, Late Red, Kent’s Best. The food is mainstream: steak and chips(£9.50), beer-battered fish and chips(£8), sauage mash and gravy(£7). Enjoy in the knowledge that it’s downhill from here.

Southover Street is home to a cluster of pubs, this being one of the more traditional ones. They specialise in fish dishes, all sourced locally and cooked on the premises. I’m not a huge fish fan, but I had a fish pie here that went some way to lessening my aversion. I also like that the drinks selection is a little bit different from a lot pubs, this has allowed them to get better prices on a lot of things. I like the ‘Oranjeboom’ which cost under £3 the last time I was here. Southover Street is a must for a non town centre pub crawl, the Dover Castle should certainly be on that crawl. It’s a warm and friendly pub that too easily can swallow your evening(not that I mind).

We had a lovely meal in here. They do a really good selection of fish, which, considering our proximity to the sea, is a rare thing in most of the places in Brighton! I had a seabass which was cooked to perfection(the whole fish baked in the oven) with all the trimmings. It wasn’t the cheapest but I don’t mind paying a little more for good food at all. I’ve spoken to a few people who say the Sunday roasts are the best in Brighton so we’re definitely heading there in a couple of weeks. On the pub side of things, its a really nice friendly atmosphere that you could quite happily spend a good few hours with a group of mates without feeling like your missing out on something else. Plenty of real ales on tap and some good lagers too. They also do a fantastic Aussie Chardonnay here which is great with the fish.

The Dover Castle is one of the better pubs on Southover, although the Greys is definitely my favourite. They have nice house wines which are reasonably priced and all the usual lagers and ciders. The large window and open-plan interior mean that there is quite an airy, spacious feel during the day, with a great view of the neighbourhood activity outside! By night, the pub takes on a more intimate, cosy vibe… candlelit tables and great music make this a lovely place to meet for a few local drinks. If you want to sneak off, away from the main room, the conservatory area at the back provides a more intimate space to cosy up in a corner with a pal and one of the many board games on offer. The Sunday roast here is really good, lots of gravy and all the trimmings… yummm. Like the Geese down the hill, they do a pretty good NYE party, making Southover a surprisingly lively alternative to the chaos of town!

Midway up the hellish Southover St hill, is this quality boozer. It’s a friendly local bar, with an emphasis strongly on quality food. An extensive menu is on offer. I’ve eaten here quite a few times and the food has always been quality on each occassion. Southover St is slightly out of town, and with the amount of boozers on offer centrally, you’d need a good reason to trek further afield, however it’s definitely worth it with places like this providing quality surroundings and a friendly vibe.

If u survive the steep hill then the Dover Castle is a great stopover. As one goes through the door the bar is the first sight. There is Real ale. Harvey’s and if one is lucky a guest. There is an outside area. There is some shelter for the smokers if its raining. The food is good. Its possible to get chips & burgers or a pasta dish and many other items. The pub has a relaxed feel. The regulars are of mixed ages. Well worth a visit.
