Love this pub, great food, friendly service and wonderful place to get to know some of the locals. Always a port of call when I visit Brighton. Keep it up

Sometimes dark and dingy, a little rough around the edges, but how a proper local pub should be. A good mix of people in here, from students, to ‘Muesli belt mafia ’ and builders straight from site, everyone seems to know everyone in here and the staff are really friendly and make everyone feel welcome. Most bases covered on drinks, food is good, and they play vinyl only in here, so for that reason alone it’s worth popping in, plus it’s the closest pub in the area to my house !!

Really lovely local pub — nice round bar layout which encourages friendliness. Staff are nice, really competent and intimidatingly cool. Cosy. Nice ‘perspective’ design over the bar of the colourful houses of Hanover — the pub does reflect that slightly hip, isolated-homely feel that this part of Brighton has. Hope to make this a regular, as everyone seems to know each other. I want to be in the gang! The pie and pint on Monday is good quality. I think one of the previous reviewers who complained on a 20 minute wait should maybe think about how long it takes to cook fresh food. Mix and match mash — worth it.

We went here for lunch and oh my hidden gem! If you fancy some proper, home-made, traditional pub food(basically a choice of half a dozen pies(+mash, veg and gravy) plus beef burger, gammon, egg’n’chips and a few things on the specials board) that isn’t trying to be something it’s not, then try out The Constant Service. In all else, I completely agree with VonTurbo, although I have to add that they must be in the process of refitting the toilets, which are now just missing a lick of paint and will be very nice indeed(although small) when they’re finished.

Certain pubs reflect their area. Quaint villages often have cosy, traditional establishments with a faint air of mistrust of outsiders. Affluent areas are infested with overpriced gastropubs with more style than substance. And dangerous neighbourhoods are pockmarked with flat roof pits filled with perpetually angry punters. So, when I walked into the Constant Service I mentioned to my friend that the place was ‘very Brighton’ So what does this mean? Well, it’s nice. It’s friendly. And it’s made a considered effort to be quirky. Some pubs have vague themes — sports, old photos of the local area, particular kinds of music. The Constant Service has about seven themes going on at once. It can’t seem to decide if it’s a fairly normal local, a family friendly hippy hangout, a music lovers post gig location or something else altogether. Trying to make sense of the décor gave me a headache. So best not to then. Best to have a drink. So well done Constant Service for having a great selection of ales for such a small pub. Not many lagers, but that’s not a problem as they all basically taste the same. Service is very friendly — you may even feel like you’re in someone’s front room rather than a pub. That could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your own opinion of overly familiar bar staff. One large stumbling block for this place though. Terrifying toilets. not particularly clean, and what seems like unfinished plumbing. Not nice.

At the last count there were 15 public houses included on the Hanover pub crawl and with so many boozers vying for the local’s business you truly spoilt for choice. One of favourites however is The Constant Service. The hearty atmosphere comes way of wood burning stoves, vinyl turntables, homemade pies and Harveys ale. Food specialties are the Coq au van and the fish pie which I’ve enjoyed on many a cold night. There not short of entertainment either as they have a collection of games consoles, the Wi playing does get a bit contentious after a few pints though.

The constant service in my opinion should be open 24 – 7 to justify it’s name! Obviously, i’m fooling and this local boozer is a nice little place to have a couple of cheekies as I like to call them. I couldn’t stay in here a whole night as I would get bored which isn’t a good sign. If I am on a little pub crawl into town from the Hanover area I would often pop in here but I would get my round in earlier as it is not the cheapest place on the way to town. I hear the food is good so I would agree with Sophie and if you enjoy going to the pub you will no doubt enjoy the pie and beer night. The pub itself isn’t huge so it fills up quickly which often means that early evening when it is reaching full capacity is a good place to be but when it’s very busy it can feel a bit uncomfortable.

This is a nice little neighbourhood pub, nestled away in a residential area of Hanover. The interior is nothing to rave about, but there are pretty fairy lights and tea lights around which do create a cosy atmosphere. The food is good– and they’ve just started a pie and a pint night on Mondays! I was only thinking the other day, «Mmm…I could really fancy a pie, where can I get one?» If you’ve found yourself in a similar ‘pie-less in Hanover’ quandary, look no further! My pie was delicious and inexpensive and just around the corner from my current abode… perfect! I generally prefer this pub in the summer months, as there is a nice(but very little) courtyard at the back, with picnic benches and plants etc.- quite the little suntrap when it’s hot!
