This is one of the best Vinyl shops I have ever come across. Being a junkie for film & television soundtracks, this place is a goldmine for me. Not only can I get the soundtrack to «Big Trouble in Little China», but I can also get the soundtrack to «Grease». Of course, my interests in music span more than movie soundtracks, but, I was delighted when I walked into this store. Whenever I need the soundtrack to a film, this is the place I’m going to go. They have dozens upon dozens(I may even venture to say hundreds upon hundreds) of vinyls. It was just a delight flipping through the records and being surprised with each flip. Just a fantastic shop.

This is what Vinyl is all about. The shop is located just opposite the station and is a soundtrack heaven. An old flatmate of mine used to be a big record junkie, always up for collecting rare music scores for remixing and sampling in DJ sets. Whilst my skills were certainly of a lesser calibre than him, I enjoyed having a mess about also. This shop is a literal goldmine of movie and TV scores, although I have never been able to find a copy of the Hawk the Slayer soundtrack yet. I like that there is a ‘loose’ filing system that means it’s always worth having a root through the boxes and cases of 45’s and 12 inches. It’s the kind of shop that has that musty second hand smell and it’s certainly worth popping to leaf through a point of nostalgia.

The Record Album is my kind of record store. There’s no teenagers, toddlers or stacks of soul-less CDs. There’s just crate after crate of gloriously dusty old vinyl. What’s more, all they sell is soundtracks. That’s right. This is where deejays, record collectors and film fanatics come when they’re after a specific score by Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, Dimitri Tiomkin, John Barry or one of the other great and godly film composers. I bought my first copy of The Midnight Cowboy score here many moons ago and I’ve been going back on a regular basis ever since. Right now, I’m after a copy of The Warriors OST.

Another record shop with a less confusing name(see my review of «The Singles Bar»), you can come here and pick up some old classics; some underground rarities, or just revel in the days of music gone by. They specialise in «film soundtracks, stage, musicals and high quality classical recordings.» The sign outside says«The Record Shop for Connoisseurs», but I wouldn’t let this deter you — this place isn’t exclusive or uppity. If you’re after rare records or spot something attractive in the window then go for it. I cannot endorse buying vinyl, or supporting local businesses enough. To quote UK rapper Jehst«I love the crackle on the old vinyl».

This shop tucked away on an unpromising road above the station is actually world famous amongst collectors of film soundtracks on vinyl. It’s been open since 1948, and is the place to find soundtracks to obscure films. I think everything is actually new or unplayed, so this is the place to find the original Enter the Dragon or an obscure Japanese pressing of a long forgotten cult film. Before the boom in reissues in old soundtracks, this was probably one of the few places in the world you could get this sort of stuff. I am amazed it survives, but very pleased.

This is a small, obscure-looking and rather dusty shop, just up the road(on the right hand side of Brighton station as you exit). It’s the sort of place that surprises you by its survival against the glitzy chains, but does so by having a loyal clientele of enthusiasts and by providing old stock that chain stores haven’t touched for years. It’s vinyl heaven, and even more so if you are interested in their specialty, which is film sound tracks. They are also good for anything before the 1980s. As you’d expect, the staff are knowledgeable in an encyclopaedic sort of way. Occasionally they also give away old unsold records.
