I’m a bit of a food snob, well at least when it comes to supermarket takeaway style food anyway. I just don’t want a sandwich made from stale white bread with a cold and tasteless filling, wrapped in plastic! Enter M&S. Sandwiches made on nice malted bread, in a cardboard wrapper with tasty, interesting fillings! They even have a range of Xmas sandwiches at the moment. The salads are good too, and the perfect size for a train snack. I especially like the Greek salad and this other one– the name escapes me, but its made from Greek rice pasta and tomatoes, yum. As someone who spends an inordinate amount of time commuting between Brighton and London, M&S comes in real handy… the only problem is that I seem to think it necessary to buy food for the train no matter what time it is and whether I’ve eaten already or not! I don’t know if they train the staff in this branch to be especially speedy, but it’s as if they know I’m cutting it fine and about to miss my train, because they are unfailingly efficient.

Y’know those long journeys when you’ve been travelling for hours and just want to get home, pull on your PJs and eat something warm and homely? Well, if your train pulls in at Brighton Station you can pick up a roasted chicken, mashed potato and asparagus from the M&S Simply Food. They’re open til 11pm every day except Sunday and also sell staples like bread, milk, yoghurt, fruit and juice. Of course, Marks and Spencer is always slightly more expensive than other grocery stores but the food is usually of such good quality it makes up for the extra pennies. If you’re super-tired, you can also pick up muffins and coffee for breakfast the next day!

I’m a huge fan of Marks and Spencer’s food, and probably always will be. Sure, you pay a little more here than you would if you were shopping at Lidl, but you can definitely taste the difference. The food’s texture isn’t comparable to a barely mediocre scrap of cardboard, and its consumption doesn’t leave you constantly wary you might be in danger of catching food poisoning, or contracting some rare tropical disease. Instead, you have an enjoyable experience, that happens to set you back a little more, but feels totally, utterly worth it. This particular branch, located conveniently in Brighton’s Station, is great for anyone feeling a little peckish.

It’s incredibly useful– that is the honest reason for my four stars. I have lost count of the number of times I have run into this small M&S food before a train or after a train to grab a snack/some groceries/a quick dinner. They sell a small range of basic grocery items like milk, eggs, bread, cereal, coffee. Then they have the essential sandwich range, the little overpriced pots of yoghurt and pudding that are ridiculously expensive but that you buy because they travel well and you can sit and eat them delicately in your seat in front of other travelers. They have a good selection of gift items too– in case you have forgotten to buy something for your host– wine, chocolates, biscuits. The fresh pizzas are delicious and have often saved me from cooking when I’m exhausted from a day in London. My main criticism is that it is very small and usually very busy leading me to either knock things off shelves or tread on people. And the queues can be a bit slow– doesn’t everybody else have a train in two minutes!

Thank heavens for M&S stores in stations. Just so convenient, isn’t it. And it’s great knowing you can just arrive and buy something on the way out of the station. I sometimes go to see friends in Brighton and it means I don’t have to go down on the train laden with offerings. Because I know I can buy a decent bottle of wine in the station and some tasty snacks for an enjoyable evening. And when you’re travelling out of Brighton, you can pick up something yummy to keep you going on your journey. Great shop, good quality and ideally located.
