Good choice of sushi sets, but I always go for the hot food. A favourite of mine is the spicy tofu with rice. It’s the only tofu I like actually.

I emailed ahead of time to ask about gluten free options here and was told that the chicken teriyaki was safe as long as it was eaten with rice, but nothing else was. It was good. Gluten free Japanese food is fairly rare to come across so I was pleased, although it would be nicer if there were a few more options. The sushi here is all adequately labelled for allergens… unfortunately it all is marked to contain gluten. So no sushi for me, but I will pick up the occasional teriyaki on a takeaway night as long as it keeps being gluten free!

Have you ever been in a Kokoro Coma? It’s when you eat a large chicken katsu with rice. You feel immediately satisfied. Then you sweat. Then you laugh. Then you feel depressed. And now you’re in a coma. But it’s an amazing experience. You have to experience it. Just not too often. Preferably after work. if you have a Kokoro in your working lunch hour, you can wave goodbye to your afternoon plans. Kokoro is one of the only places in Brighton that sells tasty edamame beans. When I’m looking for something healthy-ish I will pair up some edamame beans with chicken gyoza. Staff are friendly. You can mix and match. If I could eat here every working day and not worry about an afternoon coma, I would. Maybe I need to quit my job.

I really do enjoy a Kokoro as an occasional mid week dinner when I can’t be bothered to cook. It’s a very small place with a few tables to eat in, but it’s perfect if you’re in town and want to grab something to take home for dinner. They sell a selection of Sushi and hot food. I haven’t tried the Sushi from Kokoro as of yet, but I have had takaway hot food from there many, many times! It’s not the most mind blowing chinese food ever, but it certainly is tasty. My boyfriend is a big fan of their chicken katsu curry, which he always has when we go there. The portions are very, very generous. The staff are always friendly and polite, and you can mix and match the hot food to suit your taste. I usually tend to go for noodles, with sweet chilli chicken and spicy pork(which, may I add is very, VERY spicy! Be warned!!) I’ve heard mixed reviews about the sushi from there, but I have to say the hot choices are delicious.

I really want to love this place. As a sushi fiend, when this place appeared just round the corner from my flat I was delighted, but having since eaten there twice I am slightly disappointed with my findings. The sushi is good. It’s nice, fresh sushi, all packaged and presented, ready to be taken home. But when I’m spending £6-£8 on sushi, I’d like it to be more than just good. This is where my issue lies with Kokoro. The food looks incredible, the staff are polite and helpful and the prices are not disastrous, but, at the end of the day, the food that I have tried has been rather average. Now, I must note that I have never tried the hot dishes in here — the curries etc. Perhaps these are spectacular — I will, of course, give them a try at some point — so please do not take this review as a judgement on them. Perhaps it was my high expectations that ruined this place for me, who knows? I’m giving Kokoro a 3 star rating for serving good, fresh sushi that, for me, just fails to wow.

Since we don’t have a Wasabi or Itsu near the town centre, the opening of Kokoro should be very well received. Kokoro is reasonably small which suggests that the predominant service will be towards takeaway meals. This seems ideal for the location, offering weekday workers or weekend tourists healthy and quick meals. The self service bar offers several sushi variations for really good price. The menu consists of hot food, sashimi sets, sushi sets, salads, sides, soup and a range of party set platters. The hot dishes include choices of chicken, beef, salmon, pork, prawn, tofu or vegetable. All mains are served with rice or noodles and are available in small or medium sizes which vary in price from £1.95 to £6.25. The sashimi sets are available in salmon, tuna or a deluxe assortment set, these all differ in prices depending on the set pieces which range from £4.25 to £9.95. There are over 20 choices of sushi sets, such as the popular california roll set or the adventurous tuna, eel, prawn and octopus; all sets vary in cost from £1.95 to £7.95. This vast selection of healthy dishes and hot meals will leave you fuller for longer. Popular choices are the perfectly flavored sweet and sour chicken hot dish and the tuna and salmon delight sushi set. You can take away or eat in(if you decide to eat in the bar, the meal will be a bit more expensive, because of the higher tax rate). I have yet to try the hot dishes due to my love of sushi and seaweed salad. I recommend the place highly if you fancy a fast and healthy(well depending on what you get, obviously) sushi fix.
