Myself and some friends visited here last night and I had a bloody good night! A charming little Irish pub, it’s a good place to sit around, sink numerous beers and talk. There is a wide selection of drinks and offer bar snacks such as pork pies, scotch eggs, olives and other options. There is a large sheltered garden with an very old record player in which you play the records that are there as you wish. The prices were reasonable and the staff were very friendly. The only issue was there was no music in one of the rooms indoors until near closing time which had me baffled. Nonetheless, it was a great spot to kick start our Saturday night and I’d definitely go again!

Nice pub in Digbeth, a bit out of the way so its giant beer garden isn’t too well known. One to remember on a sunny day. I like the quirky period features like lamps in the garden and old photos on the walls. Inside is cosy and they have jazz bands on a Tuesday. A good variety of drinks. Always good to see fentimans tonic. They don’t accept cards after your first transaction but you can get cashback.

Great value and great service. Bar staff are efficient and lovely as are the landlord and his wife. Excellent local with lots of events. I highly recommend the Spotted Dog

The one main thing that brought me to this pub was that the Peaky Blinders was filmed here. A dark, cosy Irish pub with a a historical look and feel to it. Large screen that shows sports. Many rugby fans were glued to the screen area and their mighty roars filled the pub when Ireland were playing well. A large beer garden attached with soft lighting and seats for warm summer evenings. Food menu looks nice and traditional and ok selection of beers. Will come back here for food.

Had the most horrible experience in the spotted dog ! Went for Classical Sunday to introduce my children to classical music(daughter of 10 plays the piano and thought she would get some inspiration). While I was in the toilet, someone at the bar swore at my wife in front of the children using the ‘F’ word telling her that our children were making too much noise. I was very upset at this and expected some support from the Landlord. The Polish bar girl also felt he was wrong and asked for the landlord to act. However to our surprise, he told us that we were not in control of our children and weren’t welcome at the pub ! What do you expect from a 2 and 3 year old who were so well behaved taking into account their age ! Why shouldn’t we take them to a pub to introduce them to classical music ??? It was described as an informal atmosphere so we felt it appropriate to take them. Our 10 year old and 3 year old sat there quietly throughout the performances and it was only towards the end that our 2 year old started to make some noise. We promptly took her out to the adjoining bar but did not expect to experience what followed ! It ended in a really awful scene. The polish bar girl was so lovely and her and another girl who I believe works there both came out to apologise saying that indeed the music was open to people of all ages. They knew that we were in the right ! And then the Landlord came out again and started carrying on. I was absolutely mad and it was so upsetting that my children had to witness this scene !!! They went home in tears, shaking uncontrollably, absolutely traumatised ! It’s disgusting to be treated like that in a so called ‘family friendly’ bar ! I just don’t know what this country is coming to honestly ! Go to Southern Europe or to Asia and children are embraced as part of society and welcomed to any occasion ! I think this is the most disgusting pub I have ever been to ! The person who swore at my wife was out of order and the Landlord should have not condoned such behaviour. I would never ever recommend this place for families and in fact to anyone else !

I went to the Spotted Dog Pub last Thursday to watch the finale of The Peaky Blinders show. For everyone that know’s me yes I am an honarary Peaky Blinder Fan! Obsessed is the only way to put this. Written by fellow Brummie Steve Knight and directed by Colm McCarthy I was able to drag a friend along, well, not drag as she is a huge Peaky fan too, we got our glad rags on complete with our flat caps and off we went. Pulling up outside the pub I was convinced I had the wrong venue because I was expecting a huge crowd, but walking in I knew we were in the right place. It really was like walking back in time, I love traditional pubs and the Spotted Dog is just that, a tiny small entrance brings you into the first bar on your left which was warm and cosy. The staff welcomed us with a warm smile and served us our drinks as we admired the Peaky Manucin(photo to follow) and the display with old photographs of the real ‘Peaky Blinders’ gang members. We were introduced to the organisers of the event from #DigbethIsGood and #DigbethResidenceAssociation. Walking through into the larger bar it was dark and dimly lit and a rowing fire was straight ahead so we took a seat by the fire to keep warm. The following hour the pub began to fill with some of the cast of the show, me and Sandra were in our element as we chatted to them and their family and friends. At 8.30pm as the pub filled we were all informed there was pie and mash available in the beer garden, obviously I ensured I got my plate LOL and enjoyed a gorgeous ‘Steak and Pepper pie, mash and gravy. The outside seating area was full with Peaky Fans and some of the cast eating and waiting for the show to start by watching the big screen outside. I prefered the warmth of the cosy fire and went back inside to eat. At 9pm the theme tune by Nick Cave and The bad Seeds started and the was a hush that sweeped through the bar as the opening scenes started. The conclude the Spotted Dog is a wonderful little pub, it set the scence beautifully for this event, seeped with tradition and Birmingham’s culture deep in the heart of Digbeth old stumping ground of The peaky Blinders! I will be there again next year, roll on Series 3! :-)

For me, this is my favourite pub in Birmingham. Never had a bad time here(I’m a bit biased it’s my local) the landlords friendly, they have jazz nights, blues nights, film nights and I’ve ended up meeting some great people and more importantly making friends. If you’re looking for a beer in the irish quarter then this HAS to be your first stop!

Tuesday night Is jazz night where you can get cheap drinks and free entertainment. Bar staff are always lovelly and don’t forget to say hi to John, a good, proper landlord. The smoking area is hard to beat and is completely covered so good for all you dirty smokers when it’s rainy– not to mention utterly quirky so give it a shot. Pop in to find out the next event nights with a lot of local support but also welcome to visitors to theboriah quarter.

Despite being tucked away down a sidestreet that gains very little traffic, the Spotted Dog has amassed quite a reputation for itself over the last few years. It’s gained a following over recent years amongst the artier side of Birmingham underground, with weekly jazz nights and experimental music gigs. It has several tricks up it’s sleeve apart from live music nights that include a very well priced bar(shots of Bushmills for a pound!) and a large covered and heated smoking area. The pub doesn’t have a kitchen but there is sometimes a barbeque in the evening, and the atmosphere is friendlier than most pubs. I’d say you’re more likely to get talkng to a stranger here than in a lot of places. Admittedly, the bohemian inclinations that the pub has might not be for everyone. And whatever you do, don’t talk too loudly when the jazz musicians are playing!

Birmingham’s City council are hell bent on regenerating the area of Digbeth, even trying to get us locals to start referring to it as ‘Eastside’, when Digbeth is perfectly fine. One of the problems with this regeneration is that great pubs like this — and several others in the area — do not fit with the new model. Smart urban flats(many of which are empty) housing latte-quaffing professionals(and you don’t see many of them walking the Digbeth streets) may look great on spreadsheets but in reality Digbeth remains a largely industrial area with fantastic architecture and pubs like this. I hope The Spotted Dog outlives the current plans. I suspect it will. This is an Irish pub. Not the plastic imitation that is an O’Neills, but a proper Irish pub. It also has that shambolic, lived-in feel that many regenerated pubs aspire to, but this is the real deal: The furniture is a bit knackered and the place could do with a spruce-up, but I wouldn’t change it for all the Budwars in Moseley. The staff and locals are friendly, the beer is good and the atmosphere is great — Highly recommended.

You know those pubs that you don’t go into for years and then end up in by chance one evening and think — I’ve missed you! Well that sums up the Spotted Dog. A random after work pint a couple of months ago brought this pub back into my life and I am so glad. Since then I have visited during St Patrick’s day and attended a private function for a friend’s 40th birthday — all visits were wonderful and I can’t wait to go back. It is an old style boozer kept in wonderful condition by its owners. It has a large outside area, friendly staff and, of course, perfect pints of Guinness. The only drawback is that they don’t serve meals — but randomly late night sandwiches appear on special occasions! They also have film nights on a Monday evening.

How not to fall in love with this Irish? The Spotted Dog is one of the best drinking experiences in Birmingham! Situated on Warwick Street, in Digbeth, and a bit far from the other Irish pubs in the area, this gorgeous establishment worth a walking to! My first visit to the place wasn’t certainly just for watching football or drinking a pint of Guinness. Well, I did both things there but I stayed more than expected because this fascinating pub has everything that a respectful one should offer: lovely staff, pleasant locals, free Wi-fi and a delightful beer menu. I just loved the décor and furnishing with wooden tables, comfy battered sets and candles in the wine bottles that together with the exotic beer garden– famous for hosting from Jazz nights to films sections– is just a complement to this unique pub! Believe or not it’s not a pricey one! The evenings are usually busy ones at The Spotted Dog and you may not find a seat easily but it will be worth the effort, anyway!
