My boyfriends aunt and uncle recommended this place to us as its not far from where we live. So one Tuesday night decided to call down and see what the fuss was all about. The décor is very dated and for a weekday evening there were maybe four other tables eating around us. One was a birthday so was quite large. Anyway, we ordered come chicken wings, spring rolls and ribs between the two of us and were given some prawns crackers as we waited. The food was ok, the spring rolls were nice but I couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. I next ordered stuffed chicken with crab sauce which was a bad idea. I did not enjoy this, it was soggy and slimey, it’s not something I would normally order but it was recommended by the waitress and I wouldn’t have it again. My boyfriend had the Char Sui pork and it was really nice so we sort of abandoned my dish and enjoyed his. We had noodles with our mains and made a good attempt at using our chop sticks.

A good neighbourhood Chinese with some unusual dishes on the menu. If you like fluorescent glow in the dark food you will find it but there is much more — regional dishes, a good vegetable range and some wonderful fish. This place is always busy — even early in the week. It has become something of a local institution. Recommended.

This is a restaurant that I remember going to with my family for a Friday night treat. One of the first questions that people ask when faced with the word ‘Cantonese’ is ‘What makes food Cantonese, rather than just ‘Chinese”? Cantonese is simply the kind of Chinese food that has made it over with immigrants to the UK. So, that’s sorted! I’m on a date tonight. The décor hasn’t actually changed in The Rainbow since the 80s when I used to come here. There are statues on guard near the entrance, and paintings and prints of landscapes and characters adorn the walls. There’s a well-stocked bar to the front of the restaurant. I find there are three types of Chinese restaurants: The cheap and cheerful ones which offer little more that take-away on a plate, the ones that have full, lavish menus with lots of variety and unusual food, presented immaculately, and ones that fall in the middle. The rainbow is one of the latter. My Monk’s Basket(A vegetable dish served in an edible bowl!) was novel enough and tasty. My date’s Spicy Shredded Beef was balanced so as to be not too mild and not too hot. However, it was delivered to her in a rather abrupt fashion, almost skimmed towards her from a slight distance, like a tamer version of the cowboy bar trick. This was enough to create a bit of tension where my date commented on it and I was put in the awkward position of having to say something about it to the waitress. Our minor altercation aside, the meal was tasty and filling. Though if you are used to the huge portions of rice given with take-aways be warned that here a portion of rice is of the smaller size, served in a small bowl. In the spirit of things and with a Zen-like manner, I’m holding no grudge against the waitress-People do have off-days. The Rainbow offer good Cantonese food in surroundings that make the meal. Chopsticks away!

This restaurant was recommended to me by a neighbour. They said it was the best Chinese food they had ever tasted, so I decided to give it a go. The interior decoration of this establishment has been photocopied and stretched and has been stuck to the windows so you cannot see who is inside and what is going on outside. It forms a visual barrier that I prefer not to have at restaurants. The photographed and stretched picture of the interior represents what the restaurant looked like inside when it was first built. The contrast between the stretched photograph of the interior on the window and the actual interior are quite stark. The décor inside now badly needs a refurbishment. After having been to Hong Kong, I should know what good Cantonese food tastes like and I just didn’t get anything from the food I tried at here. The pork ribs starter I had was delicious, but the sweet and sour chicken was in a sauce that tasted more like cough medicine than what it is supposed to taste like. The rice was well cooked and fried to a pleasant consistency and the prawn crackers were a worthy accompaniment to the starter, but all in all I don’t think I’ll come here again. The best Cantonese restaurants are in the City Centre’s China Town. I’ll save my money for a meal around there next time.

As far as I’m aware Rainbow is a family run restaurant, which for me is a positive as I feel this results in the staff really investing their time and energy into providing a good all round customer experience. This place has been on the High Street for as long as I can remember, in fact I’d go as far as to say it’s as much of a Kings Heath staple as a late night trip to Hi Tide! They do a good salt and pepper chicken and have a good solid Cantonese menu to choose from which is brimming full of good quality food. I wouldn’t say this is the best Cantonese in Brum, however it is of an above average standard and is a great little place to visit for a family meal. You might miss Rainbow if you’re not paying attention, tucked away next to Blockbusters but make sure you don’t as you would be missing out on a very pleasant dining experience indeed.

Beyond the dilapidated and circa 1980s façade is actually quite a nice Cantonese restaurant, and this is probably why it has been a feature on the Kings Heath High Street for so many years. There’s nothing particularly distinguishing about Rainbow Cantonese. Saying that however, it does nestle you away from the high street for the duration of your meal, the staff are pleasant, the food is of a fairly good standard and it is easy to enjoy. It is quite a typical Cantonese — serving all of the dishes you would expect and the pricing is pretty similar to those of close rivals. There’s no reason not to go here if you fancy some bog-standard, tasty, Eastern cuisine.

I’ve been searching for a really good Chinese Takeaway service in my area for a while. Since I discovered Rainbow I’ve not looked back since! Amazing food, very good price and quick delivery.

It never fails to please, food always of the same high quality, usual Chinese suspects, with a few specialties thrown in,(j’iu yen aborigines are delicious) Better to ask to sit downstairs, as the upstairs is somewhat ‘cut off’ and has less atmosphere. Licensed too with Chinese and western drinks. Service always of a good standard, with the same staff dashing about the place for years
