One of my top recommendations, a Must-Visit tourist spot in Malaysia. Free entrance all year long, the centre provides personal guide tour to all visitors(available in English and Mandarin). You will be entering the world of pewter, learn the history of tin mining and Royal Selangor through seeing, listening, touching and feeling. Collections are impressive with its design and craftmanship. My favourite piece is the signature melon pot with a touching history. Before seeing the finished products in the display hall, visitors are invited to the factory to see the whole process from casting, polishing, soldering, hammering and finishing. Join the«School of Hard Knocks» workshop with a nominal fee to make your own pewter piece(craft your name on it!) Overall very proud of this Malaysian brand.

Unilocal«turned on» Malaysia a couple months ago, so it’s time to post some reviews I haven’t been able to! Malaysia Review #1 While in Kuala Lumpur, one of the places we visited was the Royal Selangor pewter factory /visitor’s center. Sitting outside the visitor center entrance is the world’s largest pewter tankard… and yes it is listed in the Guinness Book of Records! Royal Selangor was founded in 1885, has a rich heritage of design and craftsmanship and has become the largest manufacturer of pewter items in the world. They make quite a variety of very high quality items. The workmanship and fine detail on each piece is quite stunning.
This visitor center is just 20-minutes from the city center. It was opened in 2004 and offers free self-guided tours as well as more focused and personalized tours for small groups(for a fee). During the tour there’s a number of chances to get your hands on some pewter and see for yourself how it’s done. I found it very interesting the majority of the workforce are women. Inside the visitor’s center among other things, you’ll see a scale model of the Petronas Towers. These were built using 7,062 pewter tankards and at 9.1 meters, are over two stories tall. After the tour, you’ll find a café to grab a snack or drink and relax. Next is the store with thousands of items to choose from. Man it’s really something to see all of the finished products, the quality and detail is amazing! Of course it all comes at a price too, not many bargains to be found here! Here is a chess set that is really AWESOME. It’s based«The Lord of The Rings» and all the«pieces» are goblets. Very, very cool!(a mere pittance at $ 1959.00US). If you are ever in Kuala Lumpur, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is a must-see! And yes we did buy a few things in the store!
