Fat One BBQ Steamboat is a well known name in and around KL, as their«lok-lok» trucks can be seen parked at the side of many streets, serving various delicious meaty items on sticks. However, did you know they have a restaurant too? I went there of an evening, and boy, was I amazed at the variety! Mouthwatering cuts of meat and fresh vegetables ready to be boiled to just the right doneness and served with lip-smacking sweet or spicy sauces. The service is excellent on the frying station side, and they quickly prepared the soup at the table for my party when we arrived. No reservation required, as there’s plenty of space. Definitely worth many visits.

This outlet is tucked away in Serdang and may be difficult to find for outsiders and first timers but if you know where the famous Hoi Tong steamboat place is, this shop is actually just across the road and is made obvious by its red lanterns and bamboo fence. Basically Fat One is a company that owns and franchises lok-lok vans all over Serdang and the southern Klang Valley. Lately they’ve expanded their business by opening sit down lok-lok restaurants with all their usual favourites. Initially, I was worried whether they’d have enough vegetable options as the Hubby is vegetarian, but to my pleasant surprise they did. Chinese cabbage stuffed with straw mushrooms, broccoli and other greens were in abundance. Of course they have the usual meat, sausages, and meatballs on sticks. My favourite is actually a Hakka beef ball that seems to be unique to Serdang, with its signature ginger taste. You can also opt to grill or fry your meats and vegetables instead of just boiling them. Deep fried oyster mushrooms are truly a delight. There are three sauces offered, Chinese sweet plum sauce, peanut sauce and Chili sauce. I favoured the peanut sauce as it reminded me of satay celup(once a Malaccan, always a Malaccan). The price is counted for each stick, which is colour coded as per the usual practice of lok-lok vans. They also serve cool drinks like canned sodas, fruit juices, Chinese tea and beer. The staff were kind enough to have a us spin a wheel at the end of our meal to decide how much discounts we were given but my unlucky fingers got us only a 10% discount, which is really better than nothing. Anyway, by far a good experience, although the Malaysian in me prefers eating this while standing by the roadside van for kicks.
