I’ve known Kayu almost like forever. I’m from Penang and they are quite popular back in the days for their nasi kandar and super tall toto tissue. It’s really kinda hard to get nice nasi kandar in kl and my friends and me were kinda craving for it, so we decided to try this out let in ss2. When I reach the outlet to my surprised the outlook of the shop is definitely not our usual mamak shop. There are fountains right infront of the Restaurent, I am thinking have they changed their outlook or is this the ’ atas’ outlet that varies from other outlets. Then we moved on to ordering our food, you could choose from nasi putih which is white rice or briyani rice, which is cooked rice with herb and spices. I knew briyani would cost me a bomb so I just go ahead with the white rice instead. They automatically gave me kubis(cabbage) and the cucumber salad which I did not ask for. Then I add on 1 piece of fried chicken and some mutton curry. At the end they will ask you which gravey(curry) would you want on your rice, normally people would just go for campur(which is mixed curry) to sum it up they gave a piece of papadum(a type of cracker which is thin, large and round) This come up to the price is rm14.50 without drinks. I order Teh Tarik which cost rm2.10. Overall taste wise, it’s not bad for kl standard, mutton curry is nice. Chicken is a bit dry, papadum totally fail as its already soft and not crispy. Overall experience, it’s quite nice to find at night as its quite cooling, cleaner than normal mamas, but slightly more expensive compared to other shops.

A very pricey mamak thay charges GST as well. Drinks can cost half as much as a normal mamak for the same taste and quality. Food is so-so only. Price is not worth the food at all. If you want good Indian food you’re better off spending your money in a Northern Indian restaurant in bangsar. The only upside i can say is that cleanliness is confirmed on the glades and plates, and the straws are not cheap.

Very pricey nasi kandar. Please beware on what you choose. Otherwise, other foods are decent.

Kayu seems to be a go-to place for lots of people, and the place super crowded when there are football matches. As the name suggested, nasi kandar is their specialty. You can choose the dishes for your rice near the entrance. The dishes are generally quite good, and it’s very common to see a long queue at the nasi kandar stall. The place is neat and clean, and part of the restaurant is air-conditioned. The service at place might not be too consistent. There were times that I need to remind the servers because they have missed my orders. Despite the food is good, the pricing is slightly high compared to other mamak too. Well, I guess you are paying for the environment you get while dining at Kayu. If you are looking for late night meals or tea or even want to find a place to watch football, Kayu will be an ideal place for you.

I call this the pricey high class mamak! Why? Because of their pricing :) Usual mamaks sell Roti Canai for about RM1.20 a piece these days. Theirs? RM1.70. The drinks? Usual mamak is about RM2.20 for teh tarik. Theirs shoot up to RM2.80. BUTONETHINGFORSURE, QUALITY. They tasted REALLYGOOD, no joke. It’s like an addiction. Once you tried here, the other mamaks will taste so much different. And you will keep coming back to them again. Same goes to their drinks. Well they have been serving ministers and datuks around Malaysia as well. The last time I met the Puteri of I don’t know which state again. They usually occupy the top floor for private ushering. I bet their connection is really very much of those biggies. Every thing in this place is so much of a mouth watering dish. Their Nasi Kandar is also one of the best in town. Of course not to forget, one of the pricier one too. If you take a chicken thigh that’s slightly bigger, foohhh your bill will come up to RM16 or more. Depending on the number of meat you take. So it’s good to come here, provided you have an open mind on the price they are going to charge you. :) Enjoy Kayu!

Probably a slightly pricier mamak due to the branding and the many outlets across Malaysia, Kayu certainly has to live up to its standards for it has a reputation to keep. What I like most is actually their tandoori chicken as it is a large piece although it will set you back Rm8 which is slightly higher than others but nevertheless the big piece justifies the price. I also like their soup kambing as it is spicy and tasty although recently it seems as if the quality has dropped a little as the broth isn’t quite as thick as it used to be. Their drinks is on the high side which I don’t really like as it costs Rm2.20 for a teh o ice limau when other mamaks keep it below Rm2. Cup size is the same although slightly more hygienic as their straws are wrapped in paper.

By far the best Kayu Nasi Kandar in my opinion. I’ve been to quite a few around town, and i still say this is by far the best. It’s spacious and the seating areas are organised in such a way where it doesn’t get too chaotic during lunch or dinner rush. Should you feel thats it’s too hot to sit outside, they provide an air conditioned section. They’ve got plenty of space upstairs as well should it get too cramped. Heres the thing though, Kayu’s Nasi Kandar still doesn’t even come close to the actual Nasi Kandar in Penang, but its still pretty damn close. Just line up and have a look at what they’ve got. My favourite combination of dishes to go with my rice would be their fried chicken, their veggies, and some mutton once in awhile. Oh yeah, and top it of with a mix of all the curry. Trust me, it’s awesome. On the right side of the compound, keep in mind theres a guy there that will fry up some seafood on the spot. I particularly enjoy their fried squid. It comes in a big plate, fried squid with onions and basil leafs, it’s just too die for. Have that as a side order with your rice, it’ll pop a button off your jeans by the end of the meal. And if you’re with your friends, i’d suggest you have a go at their famous Roti Tissue. It’s huge! Takes up about three plates? But it’s incredibly sweet and tasty. I can never get enough of it. This Kayu is even cleaner than the others. I quite enjoy the patio furniture they use outside too. It gives a homey feel to the restaurant, though it can get uncomfortable. The prices are much higher than most Nasi Kandar spots in town. But it’s a proper full meal. You’ll hardly be able to walk straight afterwards.

i came here to eat during lunch hour and i find it curious why are there people lying up just to eat mixed rice? So i dumbfully lined up too just to try the food and i got to say it really amazed me you got the choice whether to have white rice or briyani rice(long rice with some herbs) then you get to choose your chicken and side dishes like curry fish, sauces and many more. I got to say that the food is still hot and nice to eat, the taste is really different from what i eat in other Mamak’s. The food has more fragrant and vegetables is cooked well, i also like how they cook Maggi Mee Seafood Tom Yum really really tasty and spicy since they added somemore chilli in, so SHIOK! I sweated so much just by eating chili and i enjoyed it. Also, the Mamak is clean, got a tv to watch football and windy.

One of the most prestigious mamak you could ever go to and pay an arm and a leg for a meal there. Known for their nasi kandar, Kayu has gotten big and expanded widely(price included) that it has became ridiculously expensive to dine there. Their nasi kandar was good in the past but over the years, I feel they have gotten complacent and standards started to drop. The dishes for the nasi kandar are not served hot and the serving has gotten smaller. The service at SS2 Original Kayu Nasi Kandar, is by far the best as compared to other outlets. Their staffs are more attentive and even can joke around with the customers. One time, of the waiter was joking with my friend for ordering roti susu. The waiter jokinlgy said roti susu is fattening and try not to eat so much. We laughed as he went to placed the order and serving us within a few minutes.
