Some people call this place a hipster joint, an artsy barcafé or simply a chill-out loft. But regardless of what the masses label it, Merdekarya is one of those places where once visited, turning your back against it is hard. This hidden loft in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya is the spot for you if you are looking for good music, good company and really, just a place for you and your friends to unwind and get lost in time. Merdekarya is highly popular among local artistes and amateur musicians. This place is an open mic goldmine and the crowd is always supportive regardless of who stands upfront. The beauty of this cozy first-floor haven is its environment, which never fails in putting you at ease — it tells you to leave your worries outside, even just for a bit. Here, you will find an intriguing canvass of what Malaysia truly represents, a diverse culture, swarming with talented people. Apart from music, poetry recitals are also a thing here, indicating its openness to art as a whole. All that aside, the service here is warm and their grub is above-decent — I highly recommend their Bangerz and Mash or the Lamb Pizza.

This is place is a open-mic singers’ haven! It serves as a place of opportunity for up and coming or indie artists to perform and play any genre of music. It has a very chillax kinda vibe to it and they serve delicious desserts there! Also the drinks are really cheap! Rm 8 for a bottle of somersby, why yes please! If you are looking to listen to some good music and chill with friends then this place is worth a try. The only drawback that it is a bit cramped as the space is small and full of tables and chairs scattered everywhere and it is usually full with people so it can get a tad bit hot.

There are only a handful of music venues in KL, and Merdekarya is one I like. This relatively newcomer is nothing like your generic bar. The setting is understated with industrial look and wooden furnishing. But that’s not to say Merdekarya is a hipster joint. It’s perhaps a more genuine offering when it comes to music and art. Ran by writer and musician Brian Gomez, you will find mostly live music performances here by local singers and bands. Occasionally, they hold readings and art shows as well. It’s the unpretentious vibe(I didn’t spot anyone in flannel shirt and skinny jeans) that makes this place a surefire winner, even on a Tuesday night.

Merdekarya serves as a platform for indie singers and upcoming acts to perform. It has a rather peculiar entrance — either through a mamak shop or the back door at the alley. Walk through the courtyard and climb up the stairs following the sounds of a guitar strumming or someone singing. The place has a rather chilled out vibe and drinks are dirt cheap. RM10 for a shot of tequila? Why not? Be entertained by the variety of acts here and open mic performances. If you’ve got a musical talent, don’t be surprised if you get pulled up on stage. The folks at the bar are also friendly and accommodating. Street parking is available on the quiet strip of shoplots. If you’re looking for something fun to do with a group of friends, then definitely pay this place a visit.

Merdeka which stands for Independence in Malay is truly a bold word here. Independence word itself was shortformed into the word ‘Indie’ represent something else. Indie music is not a new scene here in Malaysia. This is one of the place for you guys to enjoy the indie musics. Open 5 days a week. Enjoy yourself here with a beer that just cost RM8. Yeap, RM8. You haven’t heard it wrong. They also got the open mic session every Wednesday. So for those who got an incredible talent. Why don’t you test your power here.
