Halal Chinese food. Homst is located a few doors away from the Proton show room in TTDI. My friend brought me for dinner here awhile back. I never took notice of the restaurant even though I’ve been living in the area my whole life. When we arrived at the establishment, we were promptly seated. The interior was very basic and was brightly lit. I was happy with the cleanliness of the outlet. Their menu features a comprehensive range of traditional Chinese dishes and even localised ones. My friend and I went for individual dishes. I had the Homst fried rice which was highly recommended. The rice was fried with belacan, served with an egg, prawns and some fried chicken. It was alright, nothing to shout about. My friend ordered the fried kuey teow which was slightly better but nothing to shout about as well. Overall, it’s a decent place to grab a quick bite but I wouldn’t be back anytime soon.

Homst prides themselves on offering great Chinese Muslim cuisine(a term I’ve always been confused about — I mean, really, what is a good mix of Chinese and Malay foods??). Stepping in, we were greeted by a few of the waiters wearing black tees and black caps as part of their uniform. I didn’t really like the lighting, it gave the overall atmosphere a very ‘harsh’ feel(being fluorescent white lights) and there was not much in the way of interior décor(kept simple and casual) however it was more spacious than I imagined it to be with at least 10 round tables and 5 chairs per table. Menu was a standard 2 page menu organised by ‘dish type’ e.g. chicken, vegetables or tofu section — but not much in terms of variety. We ordered the Ayam Madu(which is like sweet and sour battered chicken), Sambal prawns and Butter chicken to share. The Sambal prawns were really good, however the butter chicken and Ayam madu I felt were too ‘rich’ — the Ayam Madu had too much taste and it was quite overwhelming even with rice. Later on we ordered the buttered soft shell crab which was really good(but you can never really go wrong with soft shell crabs, can you?). Service was standard but can be further improved on — I was rather disappointed when I had to ask for an extra cup of water at least 3 times –although it was a busy night(being Friday night when we went) so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Price wise, the total bill came to around RM70 for 2 persons — not bad considering the amount we ate. Each dish is approximately RM12– 16 on average. Don’t expect quality service or exceptionally good food at Homst — you do get what you pay for! Would definitely recommend though, for tasty Malaysian(local) dishes. P.S still don’t get why it’s Chinese Muslim cuisine when it’s really Malaysian-style dishes.

I must say I’m a typical Chinese(in terms of food wise) I’m not much of a mamak or Malay food person. Whenever my colleague ‘Ajak’ me to have nasi campur for lunch, I’ll definitely take a rain check. However, I’m fine with this place because it’s actually a Chinese-Muslim cuisine restaurant. They serve both Chinese and Muslim cuisine. So, this place suits both me and my Muslim colleague very well. As a Chinese-Muslim restaurant, their food are all halal. They serve huge variety of dishes that goes with rice and also ala carte dishes(such as Cantonese Yee mee, Hokkien mee, fried rice and etc.) to cater for working people like me. It’s a great place for group lunch where you can order a few dishes to go with rice. As for small group, you can order individual fried rice /noodles. The other reason I like having my lunch here was the waiter and waitresses here is very friendly and the shop is very clean and tidy.

Homst is a decent restaurant that many humans who reside in TTDI will know, as it serves Chinese-based dishes with a Halal sign, meaning that a majority of Malaysians(or all) are able to taste authentic Chinese food without being jailed. I am very huge fan of their service, mainly because they serve any customers pretty efficiently, and their portion-to-price is pretty much what you want and need in a family-friendly restaurant. There are loads and loads of decent Chinese food to eat, from the obligatory prawn egg omelette to the steamed fish doused with soy sauce, making it a delicacy that anybody could enjoy. A crowd, no matter how small or big is it, will be there, and it is my obligation to tell you that if you do not come here early come dinner or lunch time, you will have to wait. And wait. And wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.

Everytime when we visit this place, my mother likes to call it ‘Chinese-Muslim’ restaurant. We’ve been ever since they were still located next to Mofaz and now they shifted just a few stores away and now its bigger and more spacious. Most of the time, I visit this place with my family. My parents would always go for the steam fish, fried prawns and fried egg omellete. As for me, i share some of their portions, and order myself fried squid with honey and plain rice. One thing i like about their dishes is that they do not use so much oil and it gets served on your table really quick despite some days that place is really packed. What I could say about the food more in-depth is that the portions are reasonable for the price you pay and most of the time when you order something with gravy, they are quite generous with the portion of gravy. Its more of a family restaurant or a big group sort of place, so do bring your friends and family to try it out!

Located in TTDI, HOMST restaurant dishes out heartwarming and authentic halal Chinese cuisine. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t see very much restaurants offering halal Chinese food and the few that I have come across –usually run in shopping mall foodcourts– have been lackadaisical at best. HOMST is here to change all that. The menu is simple and familiar, featuring well-known favorites such as mah poh taufu, salted egg squid, asam steamed fish and a variety of dishes that look and taste as though they came right out of the kitchens of our homes. I would easily recommend this place to anyone looking to get a quick fix and also to keep a lookout for the buttered soft shell crab. It’s sinful in the best kind of way
