Just went there with my wife and had a great casual dinner at Syuraku. The highlight of the night was the seasonal order, monk fish liver(believe me it is as delicious as foie gras, if not better, considering the humanity issue). Also, the mix sea food nabe(hot pot) with the porridge set is such a happy surprise. Love the place and English menu is available for foreign visitors. Most of all, it is really value for money. Considering myself and my wife good drinkers, we had our stomachs full and our bill was 6700 yens tonight.

The great images of grilled fish and other interesting items are what pulled me off the street and to climb the stairs to Syuraku. I actually went here two nights in a row, which is kind of a splurge since I had limited time in Nara. But basically this was a place were I pretty much wanted to try everything. The pictures speak for themselves. But the Hamachi Kama, always a favorite, was excellent and I wouldn’t hesitate to have that over and over again. In fact I had it both nights I was there! Also, the sliced tomato was probably the best tomato I’ve ever had. Makes me sad to go back to what we call tomatoes back in the states. Other things that I tried were the clams in miso and some of the other fish dishes. Also I recommend the radish salad. Very refreshing on a hot day/evening. Service was excellent and friendly to a stranger eating alone in town. I thought the prices were reasonable for the quality and I really enjoyed myself here. It wasn’t very crowded when I went and I saw some interesting things that weren’t on the menu I was given, but that is ok. Also would love to explore more of their sake selection. Let just say I’m motivated to learn more and come back.
