Had the seasonal autumn menu: fish cake, seared tofu, cold tofu salad, mushrooms over grated daikon, and a menchi katsu for lolz. Finished with a hot curry udon, which is the restaurant speciality — bib alert! Food came out really fast, drink refill was a bit slow, and on a rainy night someone nabbed my umbrella, but this is Japan. Roll with it!

Thanks, Unilocal, for sending me in the right direction for some excellent udon. Tucked away on the side of roppongi hills shopping center, this tiny restaurant is a little hard to find, but my google maps decided wo work like a charm. Thankfully this place has an English menu, so we were able to scan the interesting variety of udon options in English. I got the duck udon, which was very flavorful and delicious. You can order half sizes of any of the options, which is great because they also have some interesting appetizers and sides. They specialize in udon, oden and menchie katsu. Udon and oden(daikon in particular) are some of my favorite japanese foods, and menchie katsu… like hamburger pattie katsu is also good. I couldn’t find the menchie katsu on the english menu, but as we were sitting at the counter, I saw it being made for other customers and asked if I could order one too. I also got a boiled cabbage with dried shrimp which was on their seasonal menu. Everything was delicious and well executed. The service was also very good even though there was a very apparent language barrier. The older japanese waitresses chuckled at us/with us, and the younger waitresses attempted their English with us. It was all good fun. I’d recommend this place if you’re in the area and are craving some delicious udon and or menchie katsu.

After visiting a friend at Goldman Sachs in Roppongi Hills, he suggested I come here for noodles. I ordered a bowl of kizami udon but found the broth bland and the spring onions overwhelming(too many of them and too thickly cut to eat easily). Kurosawa does a brisk business at lunch and the menu has lots to choose from. I suspect I could find something I like better than the udon were I to visit again. I sat at the small low bar near the entrance — I’d definitely recommend a seat there if you’re dining alone. And if you’re still working on slurping more audibly(like I am) this is a great place to practice and watch the techniques employed by others(since you’re sitting so close).

I would love to give kurosawa one more star if the waiters could be more polite and patient. But Kurosawa has the best udon(Japanese noodles), soup, and fried beef croquett I’ve ever tasted! Curry udon is the most popular one on the menu, while I cannot really choose which one is my favorite because each bowl has very different taste, and ALL is good! Or maybe you can check out their special menu, like oyster udon limited in winter time only. The broth is not too salty, not too strong as ramen soup. I know it’s hard to choose from their diverse menu, but trust me, all are worth trying! Don’t forget their croque, along with small salad, yummy! If you are a big fan of the famous Japanese dirctor, Kurosawa Akira, you may want to check the Kyoto old house feeling interior of the restaurant closely which is designed by Kurosawa art team. And this restaurant is run by Kurosawa’s son, Kurosawa Hisao. Its a small retaurant between Azabu-Juban and Roppongi Hills, convenient access to both stations. Don’t miss it. A 10-minute-wait is needed on weekends.
