I had only a handful of sushi experiences in Japan, but this one was very fun. The conveyer belt is a fun experience, as you can grab all the dishes you want. We had to keep looking back and forth between the dishes and the menu to guess what some of the plates were. Everything was fresh. This spot did not feel particularly welcoming. We did get seated very quickly, but there was really no other interaction with a person until we stood up, which indicated we were done with our meal. Still, the food was good, and the experience was memorable. Protip: Use the hot water spigots for tea. There’s powdered matcha in a container by the spigot.(We only learned about this set-up much later!)

It’s hard to rate anything less than 4 stars in Japan if you’re talking about both service and food. Yes this is a Kaiten sushi bar and if you’re in Japan of course you want to eat somewhere more sit-down when you’re in Tsukiji. But if you’re on the go and you need something fast and don’t have much time to wait for the Sushi Dai’s of the world, then you’ll find that Mawaru hits the spot. It’s cheap and affordable and the quality is nothing short than what you’d find at a good restaurant in the states. I’d comeback again if I was pressed for time in Tsukiji. It’s a maze in the Tsukiji area so sometimes you’re lucky when you just stumble across something without knowing where you are. That’s the fun about traveling and the fun when you get lost in Tokyo!

I have never had sushi [technically sashimi] that has tasted so fresh in my life. Located in Tsukiji, Tokyo’s touristy fish market, this conveyor belt sushi spot presumably gets its fish more fresh than just about any other restaurant. And you can taste the difference. With the conveyor belt system, the chefs prepare plates of sushi and send it around the restaurant for you to take and eat. For those not versed in ordering sushi, such as myself, I think it’s a good system that gives you a nice sampling of the extensive menu. The tuna, salmon, and shrimp were my favorites. Yes, I know, all of those are pretty typical for a white American guy like myself, but I’m not at all ashamed. They were irresistibly delicious. I helped myself to multiple dishes of the tuna. The medium-fatty cuts were soft and easy to chew. They were probably my favorite. The salmon was similarly soft, though not as much as the tuna. The shrimp was big and tasty – just as it should be. I did try the squid and another cut of fish that I can’t remember. The squid was not to my taste. I found it rubbery and flavorless. There can be a long wait. We went on a Saturday afternoon, which was probably not a good idea. We waited for about 30 – 40 minutes before getting a table. This was a memorable sushi experience. For all the tourists out there, I recommend it.
