I walked into this restaurant 3 minutes after the battery in my phone died so I was looking for something to get the night back on track. The menu posted outside of the various tantanmen offerings is what originally drew me in and once seated the menu inside had the wontonmen highlighted as recommended, so that’s what I went with, ordered as the«Ma-La» option. You know when you’re ordering 麻辣(Ma-La) at an establishment with as much tantanmen to offer as this that expectations are going to be set high where heat was concerned. This dish delivered. It was the sort of awesome concoction where attempting to inhale while eating the noodles in the common way to help cool them was only going to cause a coughing and hacking fit because of the peppery fumes coming off of them. 5 minutes in my lips were pleading in burning agony to stop the madness, but I kept at it. The noodles were cooked perfectly. The wonton were mostly noodle with very little inside, which in my experience is not atypical for wontonmen but little more filling would have elevated the dish. It’s around this point I noticed there was nothing available to deal with the eventual waterworks that were going to happen. A place serving spicy food ought to invest in some kind of napkin or tissue at the tables. Still, as a fan of spicy food I’ll just have to remember to invest in a packet prior to coming next time, because I’ll definitely be back.
