A casual take on zen food. This small eatery is located inside a health food store close to the Akihabara train station. The food is very simple but it is flavorful. Most dishes are freshly prepared and everything I had was absolutely delicious. Meals are served with miso soup and or brown rice.

LOCATION: East of the JR Akihabara Station and opposite the UDX building, 2 minute walk from the station. Look for a specialty grocery store called«Chabara», next door and on the east side of the Gundam Café. The restaurant is to your right once you enter«Chabara». FOODREVIEW: Mouth watering zen-like experience. Exquisite Shojin Ryori(traditional Buddhist temple food, vegan) is served here with two options, a larger plate(all the items plus miso soup and rice) and a smaller place(three items with miso soup and rice). The desserts are equally appetizing. You get your own water and wet towels. AMBIANCE: Quiet and small. Ideal for great conversation or to enjoy a good book at dinner or lunch. OK for kids if they are quiet. **Somewhat English friendly. Review the menu online(in English) before coming to make your experience easier.

Food was ok. I had the curry– which was passable, but could have used more salt, two other sides(one was a white something and the other might have been noodles. I really don’t know but I appreciate that I didn’t have to worry about there being meat in it) and miso soup(which I didn’t like) and white rice. It was the most anxiety causing order I had to place. I had the shojin meal(2 sides) and she kept telling me I couldn’t add things. Then I figured out that I could get 1 thing from the top shelf and two from the bottom. Then I wanted a seasoned rice ball that they have everywhere in Japan– but I figured this place was one where I could get one without any worry about meat– and she said I couldn’t have one, even though there was a price card in front of them… I don’t know. Then since I’m the only vegetarian in my group, she kept telling my people«one person, one order». Which apparently means they can’t sit with me while I eat. Nice.

I was super excited to try this Buddhist-influenced vegan restaurant in Akihabara during my last visit to Tokyo. Akihabara seemed liked the last place you’d find this kind of cuisine, but that contradiction fits well with Japan. If you’re coming from the Akihabara station, the restaurant is really close, as in right underneath the tracks close. It’s part of an almost farmer’s market-style building with a lot of smaller vendors selling little food items and snacks. If you’re not paying attention, you could definitely walk right by Komaki Syokudo. When my girlfriend and I eventually found it, we both opted for a dinner set that let you try several small items. With miso soup and brown rice, it was a very satisfying and flavorful meal. Hope I get to check this place out again next time I’m in Japan.
