Used to have a waiter that smoked, but as soon as the owner found out he got rid of him, new staff is great and sushi is even better!

Awesome place and great service. me and the wife drive down to Wilmington(1.5 hours drive) and always make time to stop here. there are other sushi places around the area but besides the nice décor .they are not that good. the sushi is awesome we have try just about everything there and you really can’t go wrong with anything here. the chef started making tapas a few months back and that was some of the best food I’ve had. The owner always makes us feel welcome and lets us try new things. You won’t be disappointed.

I normally don’t rate on Unilocal, but really felt like I needed to after my experience. I just moved to Wilmington and work close to Sunny Sushi, so I decided to get«to-go» on my lunch break. When I walked in, they said it wasn’t ready, which was fine– I only waited a few minutes. When I got back and sat down to eat, I opened the box and could tell immediately it wasn’t going to be good. The tempura was soggy and cold(I have a 3 minute walk back to the office max) and the crab and sauce on top of the crab roll was heaped on top of the roll and looked like canned tuna. I wish I would have listened to past reviewers, but now I am still hungry and just want my money back!

Stopped by for lunch. Service was good, food came out quickly. The dishes were just about the right amount of food for lunch and the price was a little high but you are off of front st so that’s most likely from tourist inflation. Both vegetarian dishes were great, pad kee Mao and pad woon Sen.

Fantastic service. Meagan took care of us on the night of my brothers 21st birthday. There were 8 of us and we were served like there were only 2 of us. Food was delicious and served with a smile. Meagan was one of the most personal waitresses I’ve ever had. Highly recommend sunny sushi! And ask for Meagan!!!

This was an absolutely terrible dining experience. Apparently the owner decided to keep his restaurant open with only one waitress and one cook, so it took 30 mins just to get our salads. We have a 2 year old and requested that he get his rice first because he was hungry, and the table next to us got their salads first despite us ordering for him before they even came in. The food was pretty good once we got it, but I will NEVER pay to eat here again. They didn’t even offer a discount on our meals after waiting over an hour. Tighten up, Sunny. Your chef was your dishwasher!

Thai food = 5 stars, but inconsistent service brings down the overall experience to a still very good 4 stars. 1st off, as for the sushi here; can’t really comment as I’ve only tried the spicy tuna roll and it was fine. However, the Thai entrée’s I’ve tried here have been terrific! The basil with beef(steak) entrée was the best; spicy and flavorful sauce, crisp vegetables and savory meat = wonderful. Similarly, the red curry with steak was also delicious despite being a little more mild than the«hot» level of spiciness requested. I can also fully recommend the PADKEEMOW as it had a nice flavor and once again the vegetables were cooked correctly and to order and the noodles had a firm, smooth texture and were not«soggy» nor over-worked and chewy. As for the service, everyone has always been friendly and rather informal(which is ok with me) but the timing of drinks to apps to entrees have not been coordinated well as hot and cold apps came out at different times, and there has been a rather long wait for a second round of ordered drinks. Overall, the little things that make for great service such as full knowledge of the menu items or having the empty glasses/app plates cleared before the entrees come(so the server holding the entrees with full hands has somewhere to place the meal) have been missing.

Not many times has Unilocal done me wrong but this time. It has. Excited to try a different sushi place, we went in thinking it would be tasty… The only thing tasty was my beer to wash down the awful«fishy» tasting sushi/sashimi, and huge fried rolls with sauce on sauce that took 3 bites to eat. Cool looking place but will not be back. Service was decent, a little slow. Bottom line here is in Wilmington when looking for sushi just stick to Genki, Bento Box, or yosake. This piece of «tuna sushi» is all you need to know.

I think Nikki’s is better We were in there at 830 on a Wednesday night. We were literally the only table and there were 2 guys finishing up at the bar. We came here excited to try something new, especially after hearing such great reviews. They are very slow, which has been stated in other reviews so I wasn’t surprised really. Not honestly, SOSLOW! Not just the sushi. Water. Drinks. Apps. All of it. (Also I’ve seen in previous reviews people complaining about gratuity secretly being added to checks of 6 or more people but it very clearly states that they do that right on the menu.) The sake cocktails are all very delicious. We tried them all. Food-everything is spicy. Extremely spicy. My sister ordered the chicken larb. It was like eating fire. It was supposed to come w cucumber slices, but didn’t, so when we were finally able to snag our server we asked for some because otherwise u are trying to eat crumbled chicken w a fork. He came back w five of the tiniest cucumber slices possible. Oh well. Sushi-they were cut very thick and the amount of rice was overwhelming and made it a little difficult to eat. Between everyone at the table we ordered 6 rolls. The flavors weren’t very strong in most of them and a majority were just masked by spice. Don’t get me wrong there were pieces here and there that were good but for the most part I was unimpressed. I don’t know. It was ok. I’m glad we went but I wouldn’t go back. I’d try somewhere different or go back to Nikki’s

I would give it negative stars if I could. We went there on a Saturday night, and there may have been 15 people there, the waitress sat us and got us water fairly quickly. Thats where the service ended! We ordered 3 pretty simple rolls, didn’t think it would take to long. We sat there for an hour watching the chef keep handing food to people who got there after us. Never got our food, nor did we receive any apology for the hour of time wasted sitting there. The wait staff is rude and the chef seams unorganized or incompetent. Do not go to this restaurant, unless you want to twiddle your thumbs and not receive your food.

Listen to me. DON’T WASTEYOURTIMEORMONEY! The service and food were both poor. I’ve had better sushi from harris teeter. I waited 35 mins for a spider roll… simple huh… not really. And it was horrible. The waitress and waiter were so «busy» that another couple walked out. Go somewhere else.

The only reason a two is that the food was ok. We stopped in for lunch on June 26, 2015. The waitress was kind. It was her and a male serving. Two other groups seated. Service slow, appetizers arrived at different times. Never asked for a drink order. Sushi rice was soggy and mushy. Food quality has definitely degraded since this place first opened.

I had the Spring rolls, California roll, and Pad Kee Mow. The food was good. The Sushi rolls are huge!!! The Thai spice is about 1 level hotter than expected. If you want a level 3 spice, order 2! I love hot food, but was diagnosed with Chron’s, so, I can’t partake in spicy food like I once could. This is worth a visit if you enjoy Thai!

This is by FAR the best sushi I’ve had in Wilmington NC. I lived in San Francisco for 13 years and this would still rank as one of the top sushi places in San Francisco. I’ve never had a bad order here. Even the chef’s «surprise me» orders are awesome. We eat here a lot and the only issues we’ve ever had was waiting longer than expected for an item, but it’s almost always paid back in some kind of freebie sushi side order for our troubles. We’ve had their typical sushi as well as their Thai and everything is great. Their sushi and Thai portions are very large and filling. There are a couple other sushi options downtown. One I like to refer to as «Art Sushi» tries too hard and is too expensive. The other is more like«Diner Sushi»…it’s good, but the rolls are small and compared to Sunny Sushi, you feel like you’re eating at a diner.

My husband and I are frequent travelers. We have eaten sushi on both coasts, in many different cities in multiple states, and Sunny Sushi is easily our favorite sushi restaurant. Perfectly located on Front Street in downtown Wilmington, we have dined in many times, including with family and friends, as well as recommended to others, and we have never been disappointed by anything we’ve tasted. Sonny is wonderful, and the sushi here is fresh, creative, and leaves you wanting more. We look forward to our next visit!

Was great the first time we came here. The second time somewhat lackluster. The cow fish sushi and red dragon sushi was very good, the phở was so so. The pad Thai was mediocre. Some menu items had been discontinued. Make sure to ask your wait staff. The have decent gluten free options.

I loved the décor. Very cute. Greeted quickly with friendly and engaging humor. We had: –white peach sake –pot stickers –basil roll –red snapper nigiri –Wilmington roll –spicy Hawaiian –Green curry This was perfect because my husband felt like sushi while I preferred thai. We were able to get the best of both worlds. My favorite was the basil roll, my husband like the spicy Hawaiian(but then again he married me so what would you expect? ;)

I really don’t think I’m going to be able to get sushi anywhere else. Literally the best sushi I’ve had in a long time and most definitely the best sushi in Wilmington. We placed a to-go order so I can’t say anything about the customer service but even if it did suck, I don’t think I would have even cared so much because of how amazing the food was.(Not that it’s ok to have bad service!) I ordered the Goyza appetizer which was unreal to die for. They literally melt in your mouth at first bite. The ponzu dipping sauce is made perfectly and not too salty. For our sushi we did the Special Combo 2 containing a choice of 1 Sunny Maki roll, one Carolina Fusion roll, 2 pieces of the chef’s choice nigiri(which was salmon), and 4 pieces of sashimi(2 pieces of tuna, 2 pieces of yellowtail). For our rolls we chose: Spicy Combo Roll, Spicy Hawaiian & Spider Roll. ALL were amazing. We literally almost finished everything! Needless to say the whole entire dinner conversation consisted of us talking about how amazing Sunny Sushi was and how we are only going to be getting sushi from here from now on. I would definitely recommend it to… Everyone.

Came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. There were a few other people in there. Was greeted by a friendly waitress who was quick & attentive. Looked over the menu, which was very large. This is a positive for me, I love large menus. They have a special until 7pm, 3 rolls for $ 10.95(if I remember correctly). We chose three from this special and one other fusion roll(which was around $ 10), since myself and my boyfriend usually order 4 rolls to split. The three rolls from the special came out a few minutes before the other roll. This was a little weird. I prefer getting all rolls at the same time because I usually go back and forth between rolls. The rolls from the special, although appear to be fusion maki from the descriptions, were smaller than the $ 10 roll we ordered. This was sort of assumed from the price, but I wasn’t sure before the rolls came out. The $ 10 roll was appropriately sized for the price. All were pretty good. Definitely the only place worth going in downtown Wilmington. We spent around $ 20 for 4 rolls, which was an awesome price!
