Las Tias de Beto’s chips remind me of my time in Texas when I used to buy some local tortillas and fry them at home in my deep fryer. Even the salsa that comes with it is close enough to mine to conjure up those memories of my first steps towards exploring the kitchen. It’s this familial familiarity that’s invoked with Las Tias de Beto(The Aunts of [Ro]be[r]to), a restaurant that’s refreshingly focused in aim and execution. I am a staunch believer in the taco being the best indicator of a restaurant’s quality, and I was initially a little disappointed to find the menu only has four types of taco filling — carne asada, ground beef, shredded beef, and chicken. I chose the three that weren’t ground beef. My worries were unfounded, because in each case the meats were absolutely the best representation of that dish. Not too dry, not too spicy, and thoughtfully presented. I got the feeling that Las Tias de Beto was trying to appeal to an American palette a little more than some other Mexican places or even their sister bakery next door, but they were doing it in a way that didn’t compromise the original flavors of the meal unlike, say, Connie’s. I really wish I got the tres leche cake while I was there, but I didn’t see it, so I went next door and bought a churro instead. A great side benefit of being owned by the same folks behind Juarez Bakery. I think what Robert said about«Mexican comfort foods» is apt — this isn’t your typical dive of a Mexican restaurant that churns out a dozen types of proteins across three pages of menu. This is a restaurant that focuses on a handful of thoughtful Mexican dishes in a warm and inviting space. It’s like they put some thought into it before throwing the doors open, because Las Tias De Beto is a cut above the majority of restaurants — Mexican or otherwise — you’ll find in Wichita.

Finally a great Mexican restaurant in Wichita! We stumbled upon it on our hunt for tamales and champurrado. We were pleasantly surprised that these two Mexican delicacies are available at Tias! We have enjoyed the atmosphere, the service, and the food has been amazing! Highly recommend the tamales and according to my husband the menudo is very good.

This is a nice family restaurant that thrives on presentation and freshness. It is run by lovely, friendly people in a nicely-appointed, comfortable space; warmth and glow are all over. Freshness is, too. Right off the bat, the tortilla chips seem to come right from the fryer, they’re so fresh. For breakfast, one highlight is the chilaquiles, eggs scrambled with tortilla chips, cheese, and green salsa. It’s downright poetic. Nothing I’ve had in five trips has been anything less than excellent – even when it seems like you’ve surely had it before, Beto’s aunts prove you don’t quite know what it really is supposed to be until you’ve tried their version of Mexican comfort foods.
