Was there for the award winning brunch and witnessed Amanda B who gave EH one star berate the staff because she showed up with the biggest stroller known to man and wanted to park it in the aisle during the EH’s busiest time. The EH refused to put this baby in danger of getting a tray of food or worse a lot of hot coffee dumped on it. Amanda B stormed out. Great job EH for trying to keep a baby out of harms way as the parents were only concerned with getting brunch.

Beware if you have kids, don’t go here! Not only was the staff very disorganized on who was in charge of seating, but we rudely got told that in the entire restaurant(which is quiet large) there was no place they could accommodate me and my husband and my toddler who was sleeping in the stroller. We left, needless to say we will not be returning again, with or without a stroller. Very disappointed.

We came here for Mother’s Day and although it was a bit hectic at check in, I really enjoyed my experience here. The décor is amazing and it definitely gives it a Victorian feel. The buffet was laid out beautifully and every single dish was great. I especially enjoyed the penne vodka, although the peas in it were an odd addition in my opinion. The fruit was so fresh and sweet, some of the best that I’ve had. They also had a lemon cake with chocolate drizzled on top. It was so light and had the perfect amount of sweetness. All of the staff were extremely friendly and polite. Our waiter was a bit off as he kept referring to my dad ass«boss» haha but he was great and made sure we were well taken care of. I can’t comment on the regular dining services, but the Mother’s Day buffet was definitely worth it.

Bad service. Over priced. Had one of my least favorite meals here. Was so very disappointed. Loved going here as a child and not much there has changed in thirty years except the quality of the food.

Maybe Mothers Day is not the best day to experience this place but, I have to say this was the most chaotic mess of a buffet brunch place, at a relatively high significant price point, I think I have ever been to. My wife and I looked at each other and said, «never again»

Came here for the Mother’s Day«brunch buffet». The reason for the quotes is that we had a 4pm reservation, their latest seating option, and they were still serving a whole brunch variety — eggs, French toast, pancakes. I could literally do breakfast food at any meal, but it was just strange walking in with the mindset of dinner and opening the covers to find breakfast. They did offer some dinner items, chicken Francaise, salmon, and penne vodka. Overall the food was okay. Maybe also because we were there on the later side that it just seems a little bare. Also, the area to get all of the buffet items was a little crowded but that was only temporary. Bar service was slow, but drinks were good. Desserts was where it was at for me – spread of cheesecakes, pastries, cookies, and more. I was happy. End of the day, would not return for a special occasion, just think the buffet could have been better

Attended the Easter brunch. Food was good. Usual buffet fare. The desserts though were abundant and amazing. Staff was very attentive almost to a fault. They hovered a bit waiting to take away your empty(sometimes almost empty) plates. Drinks were not included in the buffet price. Bloody Mary’s were $ 12.00. A bit on the expensive side. They were very good though. Only issue was with the chef working the omelette and carving station. He was a bit rude and short tempered. Waited my turn in line and when he looked at me I asked if he had any ham since I only saw lamb and turkey on the cutting board. He looked around and then back at me so I started to say if the ham wasn’t ready I’d have the turkey. Before I could finish my statement he cut me off and waved his hands in the air and said«Look, only two hands». Then he got out the ham and cut me a slice. Later I heard him yelling at a guest that that looked away for a moment and didn’t have his hand out to take the omelette from him. He was also yelling at the staff to bring him stuff. No Easter joy in this fella. He was a bit overwhelmed and there should have been two people working the station but he needed to check the attitude. Overall it was a nice dining experience.

Took my mother and girlfriend here on a Friday night. Great date atmosphere. Live music! Ordered one of their specials and it was amazing — Chicken Kebab. Drinks are spot on and never over-iced. There is a huge selection of liquor and wines. The staff is friendly and knowledgable with food and wine. Other than the fantastic food and near perfect cocktails this place is beautiful, from the opulent bathrooms to the carved wooden bar no detail was overlooked. If you want an intimate meal that you’ll remember and lust for the Essex House is the place. Did I mention they are family owned for over 25 years!

The service was okay. The food was terrible. The drink was worse. The live music was actually better than most. Only order the fries and beer.

Walked in for Happy Hour last night and I felt like I was on the set of the show Cheers where everybody knows your name. The place is a family owned classic steakhouse with a friendly bar scene of locals. The sincere pride, passion, and concern of the owners to ensure your experience is nothing less than perfection is a level of customer service not seen today. As i was there for happy hour, I did not have a steak, but my burger was impressive. They have awesome happy hour deals and a solid bar menu, which is a must. I read many concerns on the prices, but this is what you would expect from a classic steakhouse with the cuts they are serving. If you want a cheap steak, then your better off going to Applebees or Outback, but if you want a quality elegant steakhouse then this is your stop.

Decent salads, average seafood. Nothing great based on their prices. A lot of people I know commend their bar menu. Unfortunately, none of those items are available when in the dining room.

Came here tonight to hear live music(a friend was playing). The food was great and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Great atmosphere. The only criticism is that prices are a bit high, however not bad for a one night out.

Whoa boy. We went there for Thanksgiving and let me tell you, this was probably one of the worst experiences ever. The servers were clueless, and worst of all they ran out of turkey! Yes, let me repeat, they ran out of turkey on Thanksgiving! The sides and the rest of the offerings were mediocre at best. For $ 35 a one would think that would be a decent deal, but it was not even worth 35 cents. Sorry but I won’t be back.

We had high hopes for The Essex House. My wife and I had heard mixed reviews, and based on the good ones we decided to give it a try. I will begin by saying that we had no complaints about the service. Our server was attentive and polite, and when I told him the draught beer that I ordered was flat, he quickly informed the manager and the problem was rectified. The disappointment came with the food. My steak was far overcooked, but still tasted o.k.(just o.k.). My wife ordered the scallops which were also overcooked, some burnt. To make matters worse, they were also gritty. Every one of them. The scallops had not been properly cleaned of the sand that sea scallops can accumulate when harvested. It may be possible that the kitchen simply had a bad night, but the egregious lack of execution on two simple(yet pricey) dishes will necessitate that I spend my money elsewhere.

Couldn’t possibly recommend the Sunday brunch. Though there were many types of food, it had obviously been prepared long in advance of being set out and/or reheated. Staff lounged around watching TV or staring at their cell phones, and when roused provided service that could only be called unenthusiastic. Only positive aspect of the experience is the building itself, which seems genuinely historical.

Had reservations for Father’s Day, advertised buffet dinner. Our party of six adults and two children were informed after we were seated the buffet was not being offered and the only item available for children was $ 10 bowl of pasta. Waited 40 minutes for our salads. Dinner was overpriced, food quality was poor and we were charged an 18% service charge anyway. When we expressed our disappointment, no manager was available to speak to us.

Came here for a business meeting in which the organization rented out the ballroom. We started out at the bar area, which was large, wood. and rectangular, and they had a decent beer selection. The bartender was easy enough to flag down. Inside the ballroom, the wood veneer theme continued and gave a warm ambiance. They started us out with a penne pasta in vodka sauce appetizer which was decent. For the entrée, I had a choice of chicken, salmon or beef and I went with the salmon. It was cooked alright but was seasoned too buttery for my liking. I feel that a salmon has a decent flavor of its own, and it was overpowered in this version. For dessert we got coffee and an assortment of cookies and pastries to choose from that looked good but I did not try them. All in all, this is a decent place to hold an event like this.
