Rita’s Italian Ice

It hurts to rate this so low, but I can’t justify anything higher. I grew up on Rita’s in Pennsylvania, so when I saw one had opened here I was ecstatic! After weeks of stopping by at various times in the evening and finding them closed, I figured they weren’t open yet. A few months later I drove by and they were open, so I went in. I was so excited as I talked to the woman who was working who said she was the owner. I mentioned my previous attempts and how I was so excited they were open now! She rather rudely said they’d been open for months and maybe I should try coming when they were open.
Since that experience (that was in May), they have posted their hours as Tuesday thru Sunday, 12pm-​9pm. I live down the road and pass them moat days on my way to work or around town. About half of the times I drive by within those hours, they are closed. The times I have been in, its always the same woman and the same rude or standoffish attitude. I love their treats, but it’s frustrating to take friends or family there and find out that at 6pm, they are closed.
So rude staff and inconsistent hours make this just a frustrating experience rather then a fun treat.

Been twice. Bad service both times. $ 8 for two Dixie cups of a slushy with a little ice cream. Not for me.

My daughter had the lemon ice and I had Gelati — equal part custard and ice. Incredible. Place is clean, staff up beat and helpful.
They are open now (they close for a few winter months) and open until 9p on weekdays.

Went once. Have tried to go twice more. 6:30 pm and 2.30 pm. Not open either time. No hours are listed either. Assuming it is closed.

Great Italian ice and shakes. Owner is extremely friendly and social. Will be back, especially as hot as it is.
Note they are located west of the Des Moines golf and country club on University. In a newer plaza on the left just beyond Jethros. Do not try and use any maps apps.

So excited to try this place after my friends in Utah raved about it! And it was amazing!!! Sent the husband and kiddo out to get it so can’t say much for the place or staff, but the mango misti they brought me back was like eating heaven by straw. It’s a blended mix of their mango Italian ice and their vanilla custard. I maybe would maim for some right now…
